82. The Marshall Plan, Investment In Peace: Marshall Biography
george catlett marshall. Army General, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretaryof State, Secretary of Defense george catlett marshall
http://www.usembassy.de/usa/etexts/marshall/pam-bio.htm
George Catlett Marshall
Army General, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense George Catlett Marshall served the United States and the world as a soldier and a statesman. According to Marshall's civilian superior during World War II, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, Marshall was "one of the most selfless public officials" he had ever known. It is not by chance that his name is given to what Sir Winston Churchill described as "the most unsordid act in history" the Marshall Plan through which thousands of millions of U.S. dollars were channeled to a war-torn Europe for economic reconstruction. The son of a coal merchant, Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, on December 31, 1880. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901. Commissioned a lieutenant of the infantry, Marshall was first assigned to serve in the Philippines. There, according to historians and biographers, he developed the self-discipline, study habits, and other attributes of command that would allow him to excel. During World War I, Marshall served as Chief of Operations of the First Army and gained recognition for his role in preparing the Meuse-Argonne offensive in 1918. He later served as Assistant Commandant for Instruction of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. At the school, Marshall made changes in instruction methods and influenced several generals who became prominent in World War II.

george catlett marshall (18801959) BORN IN UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA,on New Year’s Eve, 1880, george catlett marshall is America
http://www.ci.vancouver.wa.us/marshall/biograph.htm
George Catlett Marshall (1880-1959) BORN IN UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, on New Year’s Eve, 1880, George Catlett Marshall is America’s most recent exemplar of the citizen-soldier, an enduring tradition begun by George Washington. Steadfast in purpose, upright in character, and modest in claim, Marshall became a General of the Army, the architect of its victory in World War II, and the inspiration for the rebuilding of a shattered postwar world. The young Marshall attended historic Virginia Military Institute and was named VMI’s First Captain in his senior year. This is more testimony to his character and his sense of duty than to his scholastic achievements. In 1902, soon after graduation and his commissioning as a second lieutenant, Marshall and Elizabeth Carter Coles of Lexington, Virginia, were married. During World War I, Marshall demonstrated his extraordinary capacity for organization and leadership on the staff of General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Force in France. Between World Wars I and II, he served as Pershing’s aide in Washington, D.C., as well as with troops in China, at Fort Benning, Georgia, and at other posts throughout the United States. As the United States reduced its army in the name of disarmament, however, he, like others in his profession, found those years professionally frustrating. Elizabeth died in 1927 and Marshall’s restrained nature became more evident. His marriage to Katherine Boyce Tupper Brown in 1930 began a happier time. In 1936 she accompanied him to Vancouver, Washington where he served as commander of Vancouver Barracks until 1938.

This American soldier-statesman was born on December 31, 1880, into a family of Virginia and Kentucky lineage in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where his father manufactured coking coal for the iron and steel industry. The Uniontown Marshalls were distantly related to John Marshall, former chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He had an older brother, Stuart (1875-1956), and a sister, Marie (1876-1962).
Young Marshall was not a particularly good student in school, but he was particularly interested in history, and he developed the ability to interpret American society and specific problems he faced in a broad historical context. In later years, when asked to which political party he belonged, Marshall generally responded: My mother was a Republican; my father was a Democrat; and I'm an Episcopalian.
Marshall attended the Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1901 as the highest-ranking cadet. He entered the U.S. Army in February 1902. For the next fifteen years, he served in various of the posts in the U.S. and the Philippines. Between 1906 and 1910, he attended army schools at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and also taught there. He was a member of the small group of U.S. Army officers trained in modern warfare prior to World War I.
He went to France in the summer of 1917 as the director of training and planning for the First Infantry Division. In mid-1918, he was promoted to American Expeditionary Forces headquarters, where he was a key planner of American operations. In 1919 he became an aide-de-camp to General John J. Pershing. Between 1920 and 1924, while Pershing was army chief of staff, Marshall was an important planner and writer in the War Department in Washington, D.C.

George Catlett Marshall was a soldier best remembered for what he did for peace. Born in Pennsylvania, Marshall developed his leadership skills at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. As a junior Army officer, Marshall earned a reputation for blunt honesty and brilliant problem-solving. He held important posts during World War I, and in World War II, Marshall became head of the Army. After the war, Marshall put his problem-solving skills to an even more important use. As secretary of state, he convinced Congress to give Europe $13 billion to help rebuild. This very popular "Marshall Plan" brought hope and peace to many nations. For his great achievement, Marshall received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.

George C. Marshall EB Inc. in full GEORGE CATLETT MARSHALL (b. Dec. 31, 1880, Uniontown, Pa., U.S.d. Oct. 16, 1959, Washington, D.C.), general of the army and U.S. Army chief of staff during World War II (1939-45) and later U.S. secretary of state (1947-49) and of defense (1950-51). The European Recovery Program he proposed in 1947 became known as the Marshall Plan. He received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1953. The following Britannica article on George Marshall was written by Forrest C. Pogue (d. 1996), director, Dwight D. Eisenhower Institute for Historical Research, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1974-84. Early life and military career. Marshall was descended on both sides of his family from settlers who had been in Virginia since the 17th century. His father, a prosperous coke and coal merchant during his younger son's boyhood, was in financial difficulties when George entered the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, in 1897. After a poor beginning at the institute, Marshall's record steadily improved, and he soon showed proficiency in military subjects. Once he had decided on a military career, he concentrated on leadership, ending his last year at the institute as first captain of the corps of cadets.

George C. Marshall: The Year of Decision
No man knows his destiny, nor does any nation. The destiny that lay beyond Yorktown and Appomattox and Manila bay, that lay mockingly behind a slogan ("Make the World Safe for Democracy") at Belleau Wood, took a new and decisive turn last year. It was in 1947 that the U.S. people, not quite realizing the full import of their act, perhaps not yet mature enough to accept all its responsibilities, took upon their shoulders the leadership of the world. Some Americans were still unaware of the step their nation had taken. Some knew that it had to be taken; some, either through fear or lack of imagination or lack of knowledge, were unwilling to follow. But the central fact remained: if the 20th Century world was to secure its freedoms, the U.S. would have to supply leadership; doing less might even jeopardize its own freedom. No one man was responsible for 1947's great step. Like many fateful decisions, it sprang only partly from the brain. It was an act brought about by events, and their steady, unending hammering on the U.S. sense of justice. But one man symbolized the U.S. action. He was Secretary of State George Marshall. As the man who offered hope to those who desperately needed it, he was the Man of the Year. On history's calendar, the story of 1947 could be told through three events in the official life of George Marshall. On Jan.7, a disillusioned man, he returned from his unsuccessful mission to China to take over the job of formulating and guiding the nation's foreign policy. Near the year's end, on Dec.15, in London's Lancaster House, he angrily and coldly ended the Foreign Ministers' conference. These two events bracketed the year; the second ended an era of false hopes and hopeful judgments.
