Dubbed the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his World War II leadership, George Marshall is perhaps best known for the postwar plan to rebuild Europe that bears his name. Graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1901, Marshall received a commission in 1902 and rose through the ranks in a series of staff officer positions until World War I. In 1938, he became chief of the Department of War's Plans Division. He was nominated Army chief of staff by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and sworn in on September 1, 1939. He directed the American military buildup for World War II by raising new divisions, training troops, procuring weapons and equipment and selecting top commanders. The Army grew from fewer than 200,000 men to a fighting force of more than 8 million men by 1942. Winston Churchill called him the "organizer of victory." Marshall resigned on November 21, 1945, at age 65 but was asked by the president that year to go to China as his special envoy with the rank of ambassador to negotiate a settlement in the Chinese civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists. He failed in his efforts but was nominated by President Harry Truman as secretary of state. On January 8, 1947, the U.S. Senate disregarded precedent and unanimously approved the nomination without a hearing, making Marshall the first military commander ever to lead the U.S. Department of State. In a famous Harvard commencement address on June 5, 1947, Marshall outlined American ideas for European recovery that became known as the

Catlett, George (Marshall)
American general of the army, chief of staff, secretary of state, and secretary of defense. His career roughly paralleled the first 50 years of the 20th century. He saw his country grow from an isolated position to one of world leadership. As a global soldier-statesman, he was a leader in the victory over the Axis powers in WORLD WAR II . Marshall was the only professional soldier ever awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.
He was born in Uniontown, Pa., on Dec. 31, 1880, and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1902, where he was first captain. Commissioned a lieutenant of infantry, Marshall served in the Philippines from 1902 to 1903. In 1907 he was first in his class at the School of the Line, Fort Leavenworth, Kans. After completing a more advanced course, he served as an instructor there from 1908 to 1910. From 1913 to 1916 he served a second tour in Philippines, and then had brief tours in San Francisco and Governors Island, N.Y. In World War I he went with 1st Division units to France in 1917. As chief of operations, he helped plan the first U.S. campaigns in France. Later, at general headquarters, he helped plan the attack in the St. Mihiel salient and the Meuse-Argonne offensive, serving as chief of operations, First Army, in the final weeks of the war.
From 1919 to 1924, Marshall was senior aide to Gen. John J. Pershing. From 1924 to 1927 he was executive officer of the 15th Infantry Regiment in Tientsin, China. As chief of instruction at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga., from 1927 to 1932, he trained many who later became key officers in World War II.

General George C. Marshall (1880-1959)
As V-E Day drew to a close, Secretary of War Henry Stimson gathered a group of top generals and officials in his office and sent for Army Chief of Staff George Marshall. "I have never seen a task of such magnitude performed by a man," Stimson said to Marshall in front of everyone. "I have seen a great many soldiers in my lifetime and you, Sir, are the finest soldier I have ever known."
Such flattery usually sounds insincere or ridiculous, but not when applied to George Catlett Marshall. The only man to ever serve as both secretary of state and secretary of defense, his greatest achievement may have been devising the Marshall Plan, which rebuilt a devastated Europe after World War II. Born in the same year as Douglas MacArthur, he is perhaps the only other military man to play major roles in both World Wars as well as the early years of the Cold War. But Marshall was as reserved as MacArthur was flamboyant, as self-effacing as MacArthur was egotistical. The two men offer a fascinating study in contrasts.
The inter-war years were alternately fulfilling and frustrating for Marshall. He enjoyed his time at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he helped lay the foundation for the army he would lead in the next war. In the words of historian Eric Larrabee, "Benning became Mother Church, spinning off disciples and replicate institutions that could carry the Word, center of a True Faith that radiated outward in concentric circles like the ripples on a pond, until they reached every corner of it." The low-point came in the early 1930s, courtesy of Chief of Staff MacArthur, who assigned him to run the Illinois National Guard. But even there the experience he gained in working with civilians would later serve him well.

Marshall, George C.
  • Rank: General of the Army
  • Position: Chief of Staff, United States Army
George Catlett Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on December 31, 1880. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and graduated in 1901. In February of 1902 he entered the United States Army, and served as an officer in various capacities before, during, and after World War I. He was appointed the chief of staff of the Army in 1939 by President Roosevelt, and was instrumental in preparing America for war. Marshall retired in 1945, but was later appointed as secretary of state in 1947. It was at this time that Marshall proposed a program, the Marshall Plan, which was designed to rebuild Europe following the devastation that it had suffered during World War II. In 1947 Time magazine named Marshall their Man of the Year, as they had done previously in 1943. In 1949 he left the State Department because of health issues, and was later named the president of the American Red Cross. In 1951, during the Korean War, Marshall held the position of secretary of defense for one year. In 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for The Marshall Plan. Marshall died on October 16, 1959 and was buried in Arlingon National Cemetery.

George C. Marshall: The General
In the year 1943 came a certainty: the partisans of life had grown stronger than the mechanized conspiracy of death. The Allies had started to break the Axis. The Man of the Year did not live to take the bow. He died in Tunis, on Tarawa, at Salerno, on the blood-soaked fields around Kiev, Chagsha, Kharkov. He lost his face, his limbs and his mind before flame-throwers, in the cockpits of blazing planes, in the insane shadows of the jungle. He had badly wanted to live. When he died, the world had lost one particle of its meaning. But his death added more meaning than it took: it gave the living another chance to abolish the ugly crime of war. The soldier who died was the father of the unborn future. Four men gathered to name this future. From Great Britain came Winston Churchill, who has the appetite for life; from China, Chiang Kai-shek, who has the passion of patience; from Soviet Russia, Joseph Stalin, who has the know-how of survival; from the U.S., Franklin Roosevelt, who has the sense of history. And each of these four men could show some credentials as Man of the Year. Winston Churchill had ably guided his nation through twelve months of perilous interlude between taking it and giving it.
