Marconi, Guglielmo

MARCONI, Guglielmo The brilliant man who transformed an experiment into the practical invention of radio was Guglielmo Marconi. He shared the 1909 Nobel prize in physics for the development of wireless telegraphy.
Guglielmo Marconi was born on April 25, 1874, near Bologna, Italy. Even as a young boy Marconi was interested in science. He was particularly fascinated by physics, chemistry, and electricity. The boy was privately tutored and received his later scientific education at the University of Bologna.
In 1894 young Marconi read an obituary of Heinrich Hertz, the discoverer of Hertzian waves, which are now known as radio waves. The young man's imagination was stirred by the account given of Hertz's work, and the idea occurred to him that Hertzian waves might be used in communication. He set to work on apparatuses for sending and receiving telegraph messages through the air and soon was able to transmit coded signals more than a mile. Marconi offered his invention to the Italian government, but it was rejected. In 1896 he went to England and took out a patent, the first ever granted for a practical system of wireless telegraphy. The next year a company was formed (later known as Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company, Ltd.) to exploit wireless commercially. Its success made Marconi wealthy.

Nikola Tesla
The Guglielmo Marconi Case
Who is the True Inventor of Radio? How many mistakes are there in our history books after all? How many facts are erroneously described and so replicated throughout the world, while the reality is completely different? The invention of radio is one of these cases. Despite the fact that almost every book mentions Guglielmo Marconi as the inventor of radio, the only thing Marconi did seems to be nothing more than reproducing apparati Nikola Tesla had registered years ago. Marconi copied Tesla, made some modifications, built a large industry producing radio devices in Europe and spent huge amounts to advertise his supposed invention. Yet, the inventor of radio is Nikola Tesla, as proved by official court decisions and as great scientists of his era admit. The Facts
Tesla carries his first experiments with high frequency electric currents. The first demonstration of wireless communication. In his articles and lectures Tesla describes his first radio apparatus in detail. Marconi presents a radio device in London, claiming it as his invention. However, the device is the same as what Tesla had already described in his articles. Later on, Marconi will claim that he had not read Tesla's articles, despite that they were translated in many languages very quickly.

Guglielmo Marconi
Guglielmo Marconi
was born in Italy in 1874 to a rather wealthy Italian father and Irish mother. He was educated privately and then went to the Livorno Technical Institute. While there, he read an article that grabbed his attention.
The article suggested the possibility of using radio waves to communicate without wires. The year was 1894, and the most modern way to send a message was over telegraph wires. (Heinrich Herz, for whom the units hertz and megahertz are named, had discovered and first produced radio waves in 1888.)
Guglielmo Marconi jumped right on the problem. He began experimenting at his family's home near Bologna. Within a year he had sent and received signals beyond the range of vision (including over a hill) and then over increasingly great distances up to two miles! He took out a patent in 1896. The Italian government was not interested in Marconi's work, but the British Admiralty was, and it installed

Guglielmo Marchese Marconi We are going through a period where many of the key points in the formation of radio are reaching their 100th year aniversary. But is this mentioned anywhere? All we hear is the Millenium celebrations and I bet there isn't even a planned exhibition in the Greenwich dome about Marconi and the history of radio. As it quietly passes it's one hundreth aniversary we just seem to be celebrating the 2000 year aniversary of Jesus Christ and for my money Marconi did far more for the planet than Jesus even did. Controversial? You bet it is! Guglielmo Marchese Marconi (1874-1937) Guglielmo Marconi was born on the morning of 25th of April 1874 at the Palazzo Marescalchi in the Italian city of Bologna. Guglielmo being Italian for William. Marconi was the son of a well-to-do business man called Giuseppe and his second wife, Annie. Annie came from an Scotish - Irish family called the Jamesons, who were, and are famous as whisky distillers. Annie was born at Daphne Castle, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Ireland, and went to study music at the Bologna Conservatory. As a young man Marconi read about the work of Heinrich Hertz in an Italian electrical journal, but they had only been of passing interest to Marconi at that time.

When Guglielmo Marconi was born in his father's large house in Bologna, Italy on April 25, 1874, all of the servants crowded into his mother's bedroom to welcome the new baby. As they stood in admiration, the old gardener suddenly exclaimed, "What big ears he has!" Guglielmo's mother replied with a smile, " He will be able to hear the still small voice of the air." Little did she realize how true her words would prove to be. For when Guglielmo was born, the age of modern technology was just beginning. And the little boy to whom she gave birth was to be the inventor of the wireless telegraph, radio, and radar.
Guglielmo did not go to real school until he was twelve. His first school was in Florence and he disliked it. He felt shy among the other boys who often teased him because he could not speak Italian very well. His mother, Annie, took Guglielmo and his brothers to live in Livorno on the Mediterranean coast of Italy, where Guglielmo decided to become a naval officer. Unfortunately he failed the test. At the age of thirteen, he went to the Livorno Technical Institute where, for the first time, he heard formal lectures on physics and chemistry.
Soon, Guglielmo was spending most of his spare time studying and experimenting with electricity. However, his father condemned Marconi's boyhood fascination with dismembering electrical devices and constructing new gadgets as "scientific rubbish". He thought that Marconi should have better spent his time studying other things. Despite his father's disapproval, Marconi continued to work on his experimental pursuits. To avoid confronting his father Marconi chose a secret place in the garden to do his experiments.

Having failed to win support in his native Italy, he brought the technology to England where he was allowed to demonstrate the potential of radio waves as a means of wireless telegraphic communication. By 1908 sea captains were using wireless signals to transmit Morse code, and in 1914, speech was transmitted for the first time. The Great War saw further advances. Commanders could talk to their troops in remote trenches, and even to aircraft flying overhead. In 1920 Marconi invited opera star Dame Nellie Melba to perform at his works in Chelmsford, demonstrating the potential of wireless for the purpose of entertainment.
