Mandela, Nelson,
Nelson Mandela, 1990 in full NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA (b. July 18, 1918, Umtata, Cape of Good Hope, S.Af.), South African black nationalist and statesman whose long imprisonment (1962-90) and subsequent ascension to the presidency (1994) symbolized the aspirations of South Africa's black majority. The son of Chief Henry Mandela of the Xhosa-speaking Tembu tribe, Nelson Mandela was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and in 1949 became one of that black-liberation group's leaders, helping to revitalize the organization and engaging in increasingly militant resistance against the apartheid policies of the ruling National Party. Mandela went on trial for treason in 1956-61 but was acquitted. During this extended trial he divorced his first wife and married Nomzamo Winifred (Winnie Mandela); they divorced in 1996. After the massacre of unarmed Africans by police forces at Sharpeville in 1960 and the subsequent banning of the ANC, Mandela abandoned his nonviolent stance and began advocating acts of sabotage against the South African regime. In 1962 he was jailed again and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. In 1963 the imprisoned Mandela and several other men were tried for sabotage, treason, and violent conspiracy in the celebrated

Nelson Mandela
Also known as: Nelson R(olihlahla) Mandela, Nelson R. Mandela, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Nelson (Rolihlahla) Mandela
Birth: July 18, 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa Nationality: South African Occupation: President, Government Official, Lawyer, Writer Source: African Biography . 4 vols. U*X*L, 1999. “You had no doubt when you were with [Nelson Mandela] that he had what we call in our language `shadow'—substance, presence. He was regal.”—Desmond Tutu
BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
A herd boy from an isolated mountainous area who did not wear shoes until age 16, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela rose against overwhelming odds to be president of the richest, most culturally diverse country in Africa. He endured more than 27 years in jail for trying to overthrow a white police state, becoming the world's most famous political prisoner. He led voteless black South Africans from the racist apartheid period into a democratic era in 1994. (Apartheid is an Afrikaans word meaning apartness or separateness. It is a system of segregation based on race that favors whites and restricts blacks to labor reserves.) Celebrated as an international hero upon his release from prison in 1990, Mandela will be remembered as one of the twentieth century's towering leaders.

71. Nelson Mandela: A Who2 Profile
nelson mandela • Political Leader. nelson nelson mandela s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, was published in 1994. mandela
http://www.who2.com/nelsonmandela.html
NELSON MANDELA Political Leader Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa and a legendary figure of the African National Congress, or ANC. From 1964 to 1990, Mandela was imprisoned for opposing South Africa's white minority government and its policy of racial separation, known as apartheid . Instead of disappearing from view, Mandela became a martyr and worldwide symbol of resistance to racism. In 1993 Mandela and the president who released him, F.W. de Klerk, shared the Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela was elected the country's president in 1994. He served until 1999, when he was succeeded by his deputy Thabo Mbeki.
Extra credit : Mandela's wife Winnie became a powerful figure in her own right while Mandela was imprisoned; her entanglement in a series of scandals led to the couple's estrangement in 1992 and her dismissal from his cabinet in 1995... Nelson Mandela's autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom , was published in 1994.

Mandela, Nelson
b. July 18, 1918, Umtata, Cape of Good Hope, S.Af. NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA South African black nationalist and statesman whose long imprisonment (1962-90) and subsequent ascension to the presidency (1994) symbolized the aspirations of South Africa's black majority. He led the country until 1999. In 1963 the imprisoned Mandela and several other men were tried for sabotage, treason, and violent conspiracy in the celebrated Rivonia Trial, named after a fashionable suburb of Johannesburg where raiding police had discovered quantities of arms and equipment at the headquarters of the underground Umkhonto We Sizwe ("Spear of the Nation," the ANC's military wing). Mandela had been a founder of the organization and admitted the truth of some of the charges that were made against him. On June 12, 1964, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982 Mandela was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town. He was subsequently kept at the maximum-security Pollsmoor Prison until 1988, at which time he was hospitalized for tuberculosis. Mandela retained wide support among South Africa's black population, and his imprisonment became a cause celebre among the international community that condemned apartheid. The South African government under President F.W. de Klerk released Mandela from prison on February 11, 1990. On March 2 Mandela was chosen deputy president of the ANC (the president, Oliver N. Tambo, being ill), and he replaced Tambo as president in July 1991. Mandela and de Klerk worked to end apartheid and bring about a peaceful transition to nonracial democracy in South Africa. In 1993 they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for their efforts.

Egyptian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988, and was the first Arabic writer to be so honored. Man in the Arab world saw the prize somewhat ironic, not least because the work for which Mahfouz received the prize had been published at least three decades earlier. However,Mahfouz's books are still unavailable in many Middle Eastern countries on account of his support for President Sadat's Camp David peace treaty with Israel in 1978.
