HOME TIME AND SPACE PREHISTORY MESOPOTAMIA ... Apartheid Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela led the African National Congress, a black liberation group that opposed South Africa's white minority government and apartheid. Mandela was initially opposed to violence, but after a massacre of unarmed black South Africans in 1962, he began advocating acts of sabotage against the government.
In 1962, Mandela began a twenty-seven year stay in prison. Most of his confinement was spent during hard labor at the notorious Robben Island maximum-security prison. During his imprisonment, Mandela became a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement among South Africa's black population and among the international community that opposed apartheid. Mandela rejected several government offers to allow him to leave prison on the condition that he renounce violence. Mandela was released from prison and instantly became an international celebrity. Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 with F.W. deKlerk, South Africa's last white president. Their combined efforts ended apartheid and brought about a peaceful transition to nonracial democracy in South Africa.

Speaking at the International Women's Forum, Mandela said "if there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America." Mandela said U.S. President George W. Bush covets the oil in Iraq "because Iraq produces 64 percent of the oil in the world. What Bush wants is to get hold of that oil." In fact Iraq contributes to only 5 percent of world oil exports. The Bush administration is threatening military action if Iraq does not account for weapons of mass destruction and fully cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors.

Friends, ladies and gentlemen: I am indeed truly humbled to be standing here today to receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Norwegian Nobel Committee for elevating us to the status of a Nobel Peace Prize winner. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate my compatriot and fellow laureate, State President F.W. de Klerk, on his receipt of this high honour. Together, we join two distinguished South Africans, the late Chief Albert Luthuli and His Grace Archbishop Desmond Tutu, to whose seminal contributions to the peaceful struggle against the evil system of apartheid you paid well-deserved tribute by awarding them the Nobel Peace Prize. It will not be presumptuous of us if we also add, among our predecessors, the name of another outstanding Nobel Peace Prize winner, the late African- American statesman and internationalist, the Rev Martin Luther King Jr.

Equality and Pluralism
After 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela negotiated the dismantling of the apartheid regime in South Africa, settled an agreement on universal suffrage and democratic elections, and became the first black president of the country in 1994. When he entered into office, he was aware of the universal importance of this success, but he was also humbled by the focus on his person as a symbol of international and historical dimensions. After all, during the years 1952-1990, he had made only three public appearances, and numerous people of different nations had contributed to the cause. Indeed, Africa had been liberated from colonialism during his prison years. The truth of the ancient Bantu adage umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu Solitary confinement. The Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru
When the present writer attended a function where Nelson Mandela received The Gandhi/King Award for Non-violence in 1999, the prize was presented by Ms. Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi and member of the South African Parliament. She described Mandela as "the man who completed the anti-colonial movement began by Mahatma Gandhi" and, indeed, "the living legacy of Mahatma Gandhi; the Gandhi of South Africa". Furthermore, India on 16 March 2001 conferred The International Gandhi Peace Prize on Nelson Mandela at a grand ceremony at the presidential palace in New Delhi. "In honouring Mandela," President Shri K.R. Narayanan said, "we are paying tribute to an unusual hero in the Gandhian mould, who personifies the triumph of the human spirit over forces of oppression." In his acceptance speech, Mandela recalled India's support to South Africa during the years of struggle against apartheid.

He was both an Indian and a South African citizen. Both countries contributed to his intellectual and moral genius, and he shaped the liberatory movements in both colonial theaters. He is the archetypal anticolonial revolutionary. His strategy of noncooperation, his assertion that we can be dominated only if we cooperate with our dominators, and his nonviolent resistance inspired anticolonial and antiracist movements internationally in our century. Both Gandhi and I suffered colonial oppression, and both of us mobilized our respective peoples against governments that violated our freedoms.

  • Sub-Saharan Africa had many great civilizations before it was “discovered” by Europeans. Europeans called Africa “the dark continent” because they thought it was a vast and dangerous place. The Europeans were first interested in exploring Africa because they wanted to find a water route to India. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore sub-Saharan Africa. Prince Henry the Navigator was a Portuguese monarch. A navigator is a person who steers a course though air or water. Prince Henry’s leadership encouraged Europeans to explore Africa. Prince Henry did not live to see his sailors reach India by sailing around Africa. The southern tip of Africa is known as the Cape of Good Hope. Liberia was founded by slaves who returned to Africa from America. Bartholomeu Dias was the first European to reach the southern tip of Africa. Vasco da Gama was the first European to circumnavigate Africa.
