Profile of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
Nelson Mandela's greatest pleasure, his most private moment, is watching the sun set with the music of Handel or Tchaikovsky playing. Locked up in his cell during daylight hours, deprived of music, both these simple pleasures were denied him for decades. With his fellow prisoners, concerts were organised when possible, particularly at Christmas time, where they would sing. Nelson Mandela finds music very uplifting, and takes a keen interest not only in European classical music but also in African choral music and the many talents in South African music. But one voice stands out above all - that of Paul Robeson, whom he describes as our hero. The years in jail reinforced habits that were already entrenched: the disciplined eating regime of an athlete began in the 1940s, as did the early morning exercise. Still today Nelson Mandela is up by 4.30am, irrespective of how late he has worked the previous evening. By 5am he has begun his exercise routine that lasts at least an hour. Breakfast is by 6.30, when the days newspapers are read. The day s work has begun. With a standard working day of at least 12 hours, time management is critical and Nelson Mandela is extremely impatient with unpunctuality, regarding it as insulting to those you are dealing with.

    Early life
Rolihlala Mandela was born in Qunu in the Transkei . At the age of seven, he became the first member of his family to attend school, where he was given the English name "Nelson" by a Methodist teacher. His father died soon afterward, and Nelson attended a Wesleyan mission school next door to the palace of the Regent. Following Xhosa custom he was initiated at age 16, and attended Clarkebury Boarding Institute, learning about Western culture. He completed his Junior Certificate in two years, instead of the usual three. At age 19, in 1934, Mandela moved to the Wesleyan College in Fort Beaufort, which most Thembu royalty attended, and took an interest in boxing and running. After matriculating, he began a BA degree at Fort Hare University , where he met Oliver Tambo , who became a lifelong friend and colleague.

South African politician and lawyer, president from 1994. He was president of the African National Congress (ANC) 1991-97. Imprisoned from 1964, as organizer of the then banned ANC, he became a symbol of unity for the worldwide anti-apartheid movement. In February 1990 he was released, the ban on the ANC having been lifted, and entered into negotiations with the government about a multiracial future for South Africa. In May 1994 he was sworn in as South Africa's first post-apartheid president after the ANC won 62.65% of the vote in universal-suffrage elections. He shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993 with South African president F W de Klerk.
Mandela was born near Umbata, south of Lesotho, the son of a local chief. In a trial of several ANC leaders, he was acquitted of treason in 1961, but was once more arrested in 1964 and given a life sentence on charges of sabotage and plotting to overthrow the government. In February 1990 he was released from prison on the orders of state president F W de Klerk and in July 1991 was elected, unopposed, to the presidency of the ANC. In December 1991 the ANC began constitutional negotiations with the government and in February 1993 Mandela and President de Klerk agreed to the formation of a government of national unity after free, nonracial elections (that took place in 1994). Relations between Mandela and de Klerk deteriorated when former members of de Klerk's security forces were prosecuted in March 1996. He stepped down as ANC president in December 1997 and was replaced by his former deputy Thabo Mbeki.

    Biography of Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela, a previous president of South Africa is well loved by all people in his country and respected internationally.
Nelson Mandela is called Madiba in South Africa. The name Madiba is an honorary title adopted by older male members of the Mandela clan. For South Africans though, there is only one Madiba: Nelson Mandela. On 10 May 1994, he was inaugurated as South Africas first democratically elected State President, and in June 1999 he stepped down from the political arena intending to lead a peaceful life in his birth place of Qunu in the Eastern Province of South Africa. It was not to be: too many countries relied on him to help them in their peace talks, and too many famous people needed to meet him. South Africas sports teams know that whenever he attends an international game, they are sure to win, because Madiba is South Africas very own lucky charm, the man with the Madiba Magic. He is South Africas very own super star. bodyOffer(18361) He has a charismatic charm about him that has won over even his staunchest enemies. You just cannot resist this man with the shining eyes and loving and forgiving nature. It is remarkable that he is able to forgive so many, after spending almost thirty years in jail - not for committing a crime, but for standing up for his rights.

Listen to Mandela during is trial in 1964 The Early Years: Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in a mud hut in a village near Umtata in Transkei South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was the Tribal Chief of Thembuland and after his father 's death, the young Rolihlahla became the Paramount Chief's ward to be groomed to assume high office. However, influenced by the cases that came before the Chief's court, he was determined to become a lawyer. After hearing the elders' stories of his ancestor's valor during the wars of resistance in defense of their fatherland, he dreamed also of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people. After receiving a primary education at a local mission school, Nelson Mandela was sent to Healdtown, a reputable Wesleyan secondary school where he matriculated. After leaving school he then enrolled at an all black college, the University College of Fort Hare for a Bachelor of Arts Degree where he soon displayed his leadership qualities. After being elected to the Student's Representative Council, Mandela started to live up to his Xhosa name

Mandela was born near Umtutu in the Transkei (eastern Cape province) and educated at a local mission school. He moved to Johannesburg and finished his university education by correspondence; he then entered into the study (University of the Witwatersrand) and subsequently the practice of law.
    The ANC Youth League
In 1942 he joined the African National Congress (ANC)and soon thereafter (1944) joined with a number of younger members (among them Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo) to form the ANC Youth League. This group set for itself the goal of transforming the ANC from a elitist political union into a more broadly-based/mass political movement.

With the election in 1949 of the Afrikaner white-supremist National Party to power in South Africa, the ANC moved to adopt the more militant stance of its younger leaders by adopting the

N elson Mandela’s birth-name was Rolihlahla, which means troublemaker in his native language. To some, he lived up to his name but to others he was a hero. As a life-long combatant against apartheid, he was a troublemaker to the South African government but to the people of South Africa he will be remembered as a warrior, a universal peacemaker, a political prisoner, and winner of some 200 international awards including the Nobel Peace Prize. In his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom , Mandela wrote, "I have no epiphany, no singular destiny, no moment of truth, but a steady accumulation of a thousand slights, a thousand unremembered moments, produced in me an anger, a rebelliousness, a desire to fight the system that imprisoned my people." Rolihlahla Daibhunga Mandela, was born in 1918 in a small village in South Africa’s Eastern cape. He was educated there and completed two years of university before leaving for Johannesburg. Mandela’s political career began in 1944, when he launched a Youth League to help give direction to the African National Congress. The ANC, was an organization composed of chiefs, representatives of church organizations, and other prominent individuals who aimed to bring all Africans together as one people to defend their rights and freedoms.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was aquitted in 1961.
During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela's reputation grew steadily. He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.
Nelson Mandela was released on February 18, 1990. After his release, he plunged himself wholeheartedly into his life's work, striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. In 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held inside South Africa after the organization had been banned in 1960, Mandela was elected President of the ANC while his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organisation's National Chairperson.
