    • "The trilogy recounts, with Tolstoyan assurance, the lives, marriages and disruptive extramarital passions of a Muslim family of the middling merchant class.(...) For the American reader, Mahfouz's writing produces a simultaneous double-reading. One gets caught up in this Muslim family's concerns. Scandals produced by the sexual obsessions of father and sons (...) threaten the private stability of the patriarchal household, the public respectability all-important to its perilous social standing, indeed the stability of traditional Muslim structures themselves. Mahfouz is so absorbed in each scene, so effortlessly able to assume with the great story-tellers that the tale he is telling is the only tale worth hearing at the moment, that the reader, as it were, must become a member of the family." -

About the Author and His Work Born in 1911 to a low-ranking civil servant, Mahfouz grew up in Gamaliyya, a tradition-rich section of historical Cairo. At age 19, he enrolled in the Department of Philosophy at Cairo University (then King Fuad University), from which he graduated in 1934. Following his graduation, Mahfouz found employment as a clerk in the civil service, where he worked in various governmental departments until his retirement in 1971. Mahfouz's literary career began in the late '30s with the publication of his first collection of short stories, The Whisper of Madness (1938), and a historical trilogy that dramatizes events and characters from ancient Egyptian history. The second and far more crucial phase of Mahfouz's literary career begins with the publication of his novel New Cairo in 1945. As its title suggests, the focus in this novel shifts to contemporary life in modern Egypt. Between 1945 and 1957, Mahfouz published seven more novels, all of which were written in the style of social realism. The crowning achievement of this phase-and perhaps of his career-are the three novels which make up

Naguib Mahfouz
The Passage of the Century A Film by Francka Mouloudi
In 1988, Naguib Mahfouz, "who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind," was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was the first and is still the only Arab Nobel Laureate for Literature. At the end of the 20th Century Mahfouz granted Francka Mouloudi rare access to make this revealing documentary with and about him. At the age of 88, half-blind, hard of hearing, and crippled by a recent assassination attempt, Mahfouz is remarkably lively, witty and lucid.

Akhenaten, Dweller in Truth
Naguib Mahfouz
[translated from the Arabic by Tagreid Abu-Hassabo]
Anchor Books 2000 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee Intrigued by the ruins of Akhetaten, the young noble Meriamun resolves to find out the truth about the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten. And so he interviews everyone who knew him, from Akhenaten's archenemy the high priest of Amun to his wife Nefertiti: his father-, sister-, and mother-in-law, his commanders and ministers, his priests, his physician, and his sculptor. All these people present their own perspectives on Akhenaten and the events of his life. Dweller in Truth al-`A'ish fi-l-haqiqa , 1985) is highly stylized. There is no drama or mystery in the framing narrative, which is really just a device, and little in the individual accounts, since they tell essentially the same story, albeit in rather different ways. There is no final resolution: we are left at the end to make up our own minds about Akhenaten from the conflicting voices we have heard. And with the focus on the psychological and the personal, there is little historical detail as a reconstruction it is sparse, and perhaps implausible in its lack of violence. Despite all this, Dweller in Truth makes a compelling short novel. As well as the multi-faceted portrait of Akhenaten himself, there is a fascination in the ways in which the other characters reveal themselves in describing him. And it is hard to break off reading Naguib Mahfouz's prose, which even in translation has a unique poetry.

Naguib Mahfouz
[translated from the Arabic]
Anchor Books 2001 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee When Othman Bayyumi is employed as a grade 8 clerk, he is just one of many new employees welcomed by the Director General. But his ambition to attain that lofty position himself is no idle fancy: for him achieving promotion and serving the government become a religious obsession, "the path of glory". So he studies after hours, does extra translation work, cultivates his superiors, saves like a miser, and spurns politics, climbing steadily towards his goal. It is only desire for women which can draw him out, but he denies himself love and marriage until it is almost too late. Respected Sir Hadrat al-Muhtaram , 1975) is an intense psychological study which never leaves its not particularly attractive central subject, but Mahfouz makes it almost into a fairy-tale, told with a light and (even in translation) inimitable prose. It is effortlessly readable, with dramatic episodes covered in short chapters which flow easily one after the other, just like the years of Othman's life, and the result is an absolute gem of a novel. Set around a theatre troupe
