Team - Board of Advisors Dr. Alan G. MacDiarmid, the 2000 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, is the Blanchard Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania since 1955, and the James Von Ehr Distinguished Chair in Science and Technology at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). Dr. MacDiarmid is the co-discoverer of the field of conducting polymers, more commonly known as "synthetic metals." In recent years, Dr. MacDiarmid has pioneered research in the field of nanoelectronics.
Alan MacDiarmid was born in Masterton in 1927. He was educated at Hutt Valley High School and Victoria University. After completed a MSc in Chemistry he was awarded a Fullbright Fellowship to study for a PhD at the University of Wisconsin. He then won a Shell Scholarship, which enabled him to go to Cambridge University where he completed a second PhD. In 1955 after a year at St Andrews University in Scotland, Alan took a position at the University of Pennsylvania. He became a full Professor in 1964 and the distinguished Blanchard Professor in Chemistry from 1988. He was awarded the 1999 American Chemical Society Award in Materials Chemistry.
During the past 20 years he has been involved exclusively with conducting polymers, particularly the synthesis, chemistry, doping, electrochemistry, conductivity, magnetic and optical properties and processing of polyacetylene and polyaniline. He is the author/co-author of approximately 600 research papers and 20 patents. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees both nationally internationally. Most recently, he was named recipient of the 1999 American Chemical Society Award in Materials Chemistry, which will be presented at the society's National Meeting in Anaheim, CA in March 1999. In 2000 he was awarded the Nobel prize for Chemistry; shared with physicist Alan Heeger (USA) and chemist Hideki Shirakawa (Japan) for the discovery and development of conductive organic polymers. In 2001 he was presented with the 2000 Rutherford Medal - New Zealand's highest science award.

A vezetés hasonló a félvezetõkben tapasztaltakhoz. Fontos azonban a polimer szerkezete, hiszen a fentiek egy molekulán belüli történések és meg kell történjen az ugrás a molekulák között is.

A team whose research led to improvements in the quality of television have received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
Americans Alan J. Heeger and Alan G. MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa of Japan, won the prize on Tuesday for their discoveries that plastic can be made electrically conductive an advance that has led to improvements in film, TV screens and windows.
They will share the $915,000 prize for the "discovery and development of conductive polymers," according to the citation by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three scientists who developed electrical components that allow for fast communication using fiber optics and satellites, and that serve as the soul of the personal computer.

University of Tsukuba Americans Alan Heeger and Alan MacDiarmid and Japan's Hideki Shirakawa won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering that plastic can be made to conduct electricity. Plastics, generally thought to be incapable of conducting electricity, are polymers, molecules whose structure is repeated in long chains. Heeger, MacDiarmid and Shirakawa showed that polymers can conduct electricity if they are "doped" by removing or introducing electrons and if they consist alternately of single and double bonds between carbon atoms.

WOODCOCK WASHBURN CLIENT ALAN MACDIARMID WINS NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY Alan G. MacDiarmid, Ph.D., Blanchard Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, is one of three recipients of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Sharing the honor are former Penn faculty member Alan J. Heeger, Ph.D., now at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and Hideki Shirakawa, Ph.D. The work underlying the award, which relates to the ability of certain polymers to conduct electricity in highly efficient ways, was carried out at Penn. Woodcock Washburn attorneys, including partners John W. Caldwell, Dianne B. Elderkin, Joseph Lucci and David Bailey represented the university and Dr. MacDiarmid in obtaining twenty-five of his thirty patents. These properties include primary and secondary batteries, fuel cells, other electrochemical systems and attendant methods. Woodcock Washburn is proud of its relationship with Alan MacDiarmid.
