ABSTRACT
We performed a cladistic analysis using 21 genera and 20 characteristics to obtain a better understanding of the significant characteristics of the phylum Discomitochondria. Characteristics included the number of flagella, presence of chloroplasts, and cristae, among others. Of the 21 genera, 12 were euglenoids, four were schizomastigotists, four were kinetoplastids, and one was cryptomonad as classified by Holt (2000). Through our analysis, we classified the genera studied into four branches through the use of morphological and physiological data. The phylum Discomitochondria was then separated into three phyla.
INTRODUCTION Within the introduction of Margulis, et al ., (1990) fourteen different phyla were organized in a group in which all phyla had reversible formation of flagella and did not possess complex sexual life cycles. Of these fourteen phyla, two of the three groups in which the cladistic analysis was performed were organized into classes under the phylum Zoomastigina (Margulis, et al ., 1990). The Euglenoids were a separate phyla, but under the same group of reversible formation of flagella and no possession of a complex sexual life cycle (Margulis

To facilitate access to the large diversity of information, this concept paper is organized into two components: Main and Appendix. The Main document contains the introductory overview of the case for sequencing the Tetrahymena genome, the concise description of the sequencing and annotation project, and the specific answers to the NonMammalian Models Committee questionnaire. The Appendix expands on the coverage of two topics in the main document: advanced molecular genetic tools and unique or very special studies that would be enabled by the availability of the genome sequence. The latter are grouped by topic into numbered tables for easy reference from the main document. All the cited references are listed in the Appendix, organized so that related references are generally clustered together. In 1932-1933 a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to spend a year in Heidelberg in the laboratory of Otto Meyerhof . He studied haematin - a growth factor for the flagellates - the specificity of protohaematin, its quantitative effect on growth, and the part it played in the respiratory catalyst system.
Then in 1936, again with the aid of a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, Lwoff and his wife spent seven months in Cambridge in the laboratory of David Keilin; factor V, which is required by Haemophilus influenzae , was identified with cozymase and its physiological role for the bacterium was defined.
There were many other investigations on growth factors for flagellates and ciliates with regard to growth factors, loss of function, and physiological development until the time when Lwoff began working on the problem of lysogenic bacteria.
Dr. Lwoff was appointed Head of the Department at the Institut Pasteur in 1938, and Professor of Microbiology at the Science Faculty in Paris in 1959.

Lwoff, 1965 UPI/Bettmann lysogeny , in which a bacterial virus, or bacteriophage, infects bacteria and is transmitted to subsequent bacterial generations solely through the cell division of its host. Lwoff's discoveries brought him (with and Jacques Monod ) the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1965. Lwoff, born of Russian-Polish parents, was educated at the University of Paris. He spent most of his research career at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, serving on the board of directors from 1966 to 1972. From 1959 to 1968 he was also a professor of microbiology at the Sorbonne in Paris. When he retired from the Pasteur Institute in 1968, he served as director of the Cancer Research Institute at nearby Villejuif until 1972. In his prizewinning research, Lwoff showed that, after infection, the virus is passed on to succeeding generations of bacteria in a noninfective form called a prophage. He demonstrated that under certain conditions this prophage gives rise to an infective form that causes lysis, or disintegration, of the bacterial cell; the viruses that are released upon the cell's destruction are capable of infecting other bacterial hosts. Lwoff also discovered that vitamins serve both as growth factors for microbes and as coenzymes. Among his written works are Problems of Morphogenesis in Ciliates (1950) and Biological Order After World War II Lwoff won the Medal of the Resistance for work in the French underground. He was also made an officer of the
