Dr. Harold E. Varmus, the director of the National Institutes of Health, delivered the annual Salvador E. Luria Lecture in Life Sciences in Room 10-250 last Tuesday. The talk, entitled "Building Animal Models of Human Cancers," was part of the lecture series dedicated to the memory of Luria, who was "an important force in the department," said Professor of Biology Richard O. Hynes. During the 1970s, Luria was one of the founding members of the Cancer Center. Varmus was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1989 for research undertaken with Dr. J. Michael Bishop at the University of California San Francisco on the basic mechanisms involved in cellular transformation. The research led to the discovery of cellular proto-oncogenes - normal cellular genes that, when damaged by mutation, become converted into active oncogenes that drive the cellular proliferation that leads to human cancer. "Until the time of this discovery, many assumed that cancer is created by infectious viruses," said Professor of Biology Robert A. Weinberg. "With the Varmus-Bishop discovery, it became apparent that the seeds of cancer lie in our normal genes, and that such genes represent the targets of damage by mutagenic agents, leading to mutated cells that exhibit the properties of runaway growth," Weinberg said.

Luria was trained in medicine and interested in physics. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Turin, he worked at the Radium Institute in Paris, studying medical physics, including radiation biology. There he also learned about bacteriophage. When Italy entered WWII Luria came to the U.S., working first at Columbia and then accepting a post at Indiana University. He first met Max Delbruck in 1940, when Delbruck was at Vanderbilt and Luria was at the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons. Delbruck invited him to go join him at Cold Spring Harbor the following summer to do phage experiments. Luria accepted and thus the "phage group" was born. These scientists, located around the country, met at Cold Spring Harbor during the 1940s to do experiments and talk science. Their research goal was to identify the physical nature of the gene. To do this, they used bacterial viruses, called bacteriophage or simply "phage." These were the simplest "creatures" they could find that had genesthe biological equivalent of a hydrogen atom. In the 1940s Luria's Indiana University lab contained graduate student James D. Watson

Atwood, Schneider, and Ryan reported on long-term studies of E. coli populations in which a class of mutations differing minimally in selective advantage or disadvantage in comparison with the parent type was discovered. In periodic shifts of selection produced by altering the environment, one type may very quickly completely replace the other. Periodic reversals of this type lead to a non-specific selection against all mutants that are eliminated during the population turnover. The evolutionary implications are interesting. Alter the environment, and thereby completely shift the pattern of selection for many genes. An interesting and somewhat unexpected phenomenon in the general picture of mutation was reported by Evelyn Witkin. Many mutant colonies of

Dictionary Definition of Salvador E. Luria

Salvador Luria ) was a naturalized American microbiologist whose pioneering work on phage helped open up molecular biology Luria was born in Torino Italy , but fled to France in and then to the United States in as his leftist, pacifist views were incongruent with the fascist regime of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini . In the US, his work focussed on the genetics of bacteriophages viruses that infect bacteria . One of his early graduate students was James Watson , who went on to discover the structure of DNA with Francis Crick His famous experiment with Max Delbrück in demonstrated statistically that inheritance in bacteria must follow Darwinian rather than Larmarckian principles and that mutant bacteria occurring randomly can still bestow viral resistance without the virus being present. The idea that natural selection affects bacteria has profound consequences, for example, it explains how bacteria develop antibiotic resistance. Along with Max Delbrück and Alfred Hershey , Luria was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine.

Salvador Edward Luria
(1912-1991), biologist
He studied at the university of his native Turin, Italy, and then in Paris. After the Germans took over France in 1940 he went to the USA and taught at Columbia University (1940-42), Indiana University (1943-50), the University of Illinois (1950-59), and was professor of microbiology (from 1964 of biology) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1959. His researches during WW2 proved that genetic mutations could occur in viruses that infect bacteria, a discovery that won him the 1969 Nobel Prize in medicine. From 1972 to 1985, he directed the Center for Cancer Research at MIT.
