V. Chemical Transmission I n the first decades of the 20th century, research about the chemical mediation of action in the autonomous, or vegetative nervous system, how it was then called, was developing at a feverish pace in many laboratories in the world. The main centers were located in England, where William Maddock Bayliss Ernest Henry Starling After working 12 years on the pharmacology of the Autonomous Nervous System, now in the University of Graz, Austria, he devised the crucial experiment which provided the first reliable evidence for the existence of chemical transmission in a synapse. The legend tells that he had the idea of the experiment in a dream and that he ran to the lab as soon as he was awake.

R ), there was a strong inhibition in this heart beats. The second heart ( D ) was unaffected. However, when he perfused the second heart with the outflow of the perfusion of the first one, he achieved exactly the same effect, with a small delay provoked by the pump action and the chemical action.
The only fact that could explain this result was that there was some substance being produced at the parasympathetic synapse level in heart R, which had the power to provoke a similar response in the muscles of heart D. Loewi called this substance

    Otto Loewi
Otto Loewi in the news Otto Loewi June 3 December 25 ) was a German-American pharmacologist Loewi was born in Frankfurt , Germany. He later spent many years in Austria , where he investigated how vital organs respond to chemical and electrical stimulation. He also established their relative dependence on some kind of protein s for proper function. Consequently, he learnt the way of how nerve impulse s are transmitted by chemical messengers. The first chemical neurotransmitter that he identified was acetylcholine . His discoveries helped in enhancing medical therapy and personally earned for him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine which he shared with Sir Henry Dale He also clarified two mechanisms of eminent therapeutic importance: the blockade and the augmentation of nerve action by certain drugs. Loewi moved to the United States in , where he became a research professor at the New York University College of Medicine. He died in New York City.

"Nothing happens unless first a dream" - Carl Sandburg (1922)
It isn't everyone who writes down their dreams when awakened in the middle of the night. Perhaps more scientists should. Otto Loewi, of Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, did just that. I'm not referring t o Otto Lowy, the Austrian who survived the Nazi death camps and with whom we can tour his beloved Vienna each week aboard CBC's "The Transcontinental". "My" Otto Loewi, born in 1873 on June 3rd, was an eminent physiologist and pharmaco logist whose work led him to study the hypothesis that neurons interact across synapses through chemical mediators. This was in the early 1920's.
    J. N. Langley, back in 1900, had come close to a full understanding of the role of adrenaline in neural stimulation. One of his students, T. R. Elliott, even published that "Adrenaline might be t he chemical stimulant liberated on each occasion when the impulse arrives..." In England, some two decades later, Henry Hallett Dale, later Sir Henry, working on the pharmacology of ergot, became interested in the choline ester of acetic acid, or ac etylcholine. Ergot is a drug derived from the fungus Claviceps purpurea which causes a diseased condition in rye and other cereals. For centuries it had been used to control hemorrhage and to induce labour by causing uterine contraction. The ace tylcholine had been isolated by Reid Hunt back in 1906, and it had been demonstrated that it exerted a powerful dilator action on blood vessels. This is a story so characteristic of scientific research. Contributions come from many sources, some obvious ly contributory, others less so, and some not even recognizable as such.
