Über uns Biographie Otto Loewi Arzt und Pharmakologe Otto Loewi * 3.Juni 1873 in Frankfurt/Main Nach dem Einmarsch der Nationalsozialisten in Österreich am 12. März 1938 wurde er als Jude für einige Monate inhaftiert. Nur durch Auslieferung des Nobelpreisgeldes und seines gesamten Eigentums kam er frei und konnte emigrieren. Bereits im Jahr 1938 wurde er Professor in Brüssel, das er aber vor Kriegsausbruch verließ. Den Kriegsbeginn erlebte er in London. Von dort ging er im Jahr 1940 als "Research Professor of Pharmacology" an die New York University in den USA, wo er kurze Zeit später (1941) die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft annahm. Er besuchte Europa und Österreich im Laufe seines späteren Lebens nur noch einmal, und zwar anlässlich seiner Präsidentschaft des 4. Internationalen Biochemie- Kongresses im Jahre 1958 in Wien. Loewis Leben endete im hohen Alter von 88 Jahren im Jahr 1961 in New York. Am 17. August des folgenden Jahres wurde seine Urne in Woods Hole im US-Bundesstaat Massachusetts (Hauptstadt Boston) beigesetzt.

Home OTTO LOEWI (1873–1961) and the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology of the University of Graz Deutsch OTTO LOEWI Otto Loewi He studied Medicine in Strassburg and, for one year, in Munich. In Strassburg he was especially fascinated by the internal specialist Naunyn and the pharmacologist Schmiedeberg . The topic of his doctoral thesis under Oswald Schmiedeberg was an investigation using the isolated frog heart preparation. He used this preparation almost throughout his whole career, and it was this preparation that he used for the experiments which lead to his Nobel Prize. After working in Strassburg and Frankfurt he worked with at the Dept. of Pharmacology in Marburg where he became Lecturer in 1900. There he proved, against the general opinion of that time, that animals are capable of synthesizing proteins from amino acids ( , On protein synthesis in animals, In 1904, became Head of the Department of Pharmacoloyg in Vienna. Loewi followed him 1905 and received the Austrian citizenship in addition to his native German citizenship. 1907 he met Guida Goldschmidt who he married in 1908.

Seine Doktorarbeit bei Oswald Schmiedeberg wurde 1904 nach Wien berufen. Loewi Guida Goldschmidt , kennen und heiratete 1908. Im Jahre 1909 wurde Loewi Seine Untersuchungen und auf ein Organ. Diese Arbeiten wurden 1921 mit einer nur knapp 4 Seiten langen Publikation eingeleitet und zeigten, dass die Impulsübertragung auf der Freisetzung eines chemischen Stoffes, eines Transmitters, beruhte. Für seine Arbeiten wurde Loewi 1936 gemeinsam mit Sir Henry Dale der Nobelpreis für Physiologie und Medizin verliehen. Loewi Am 25. Dezember 1961 verstarb Loewi in seinem Haus in New York. Seine Urne wurde am 17. August 1962 in Woods Hole, Mass., beigesetzt. Lit.: F. Lembeck, W. Giere: "Otto Loewi. Ein Lebensbild in Dokumenten". Springer: Berlin, 1968. It was the design of an experiment to determine whether or not the hypothesis of chemical transmission that I had uttered seventeen years ago was correct. Herausragende Forschungsarbeiten Nach Graz kam Loewi im Jahre 1909, als er auf den Pharmakologischen Lehrstuhl der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz berufen wurde. In den Jahren 1912/13 war er auch gewählter Dekan der Medizinischen Fakultät. Zu seinen wohl bekanntesten Forschungen dieser Dekade zählen die Untersuchungen "Über eine Steigerung der Adrenalinfreisetzung durch Kokain" und "Über den Zusammenhang von Digitalis und Calziumwirkung", die ihrer Zeit lange voraus waren und deshalb auch erst Jahrzehnte später weitergeführt werden konnten. Nobelpreis Emigration Loewi ging vorerst nach London und 1940 als "Research Professor of Pharmacology" an die New York University. 1941 wurde er auch US-Staatsbürger.

Being of Jewish descent, however, he was forced to leave the country in 1938 and emigrated to the USA. Otto Loewi is born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The medical doctor qualifies as a university lecturer in Marburg (Germany). His research proves that, contrary to what was believed at the time, the animal organism is capable of synthesising proteins from amino acids. The German citizen Loewi accompanies his professor from Marburg to Vienna to assist in his researches there. In 1909, Loewi – who has by now become an Austrian citizen – goes to Graz, where he accepts a chair of pharmacology at the University there. In the years 1912/13 he also serves as dean of the faculty of medicine. In 1936, Otto Loewi receives the Nobel Prize for his outstanding research into the transmission of nerve impulses to organs. The famous scientist is forced to leave Austria because of his Jewish origins.
