Gabriel Lippmann
French physicist who received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1908 for producing the first colour photographic plate . He was known for the innovations that resulted from his search for a direct colour-sensitive medium in photography.
Though born of French parents in Luxembourg, Lippmann grew up in Paris and was a bright but unruly student. Despite the fact that he never received his teacher's certificate, he was appointed professor of mathematical physics at the Sorbonne in 1883. He later was appointed head of the Sorbonne's Laboratories of Physical Research (1886). Lippman's scientific talents were varied, but he was best known for his contributions in the fields of optics and electricity. He did early, important studies of piezoelectricity (precursors of Pierre Curie's work) and of induction in resistanceless, or superconductive, circuits (precursors of Heike Kammerlingh-Onnes' validations). He also invented the coleostat, an instrument that allowed for long-exposure photo graphs of the sky by compensating for the Earth's motion during the exposure.

Gabriel Lippmann was a giant of his day in the world of classical physics - a multi-talented researcher best known for his contributions to optics and electricity . His textbook on thermodynamics (the physics of heat in relation to other energy forms) was the standard reference in France. He invented the capillary electrometer , which measured small differences in voltage and was used in early electrocardiographs . His research in piezoelectricity and seismology furthered developments in those fields. Lippmann also invented the coelostat, a new astronomical tool that compensated for the earth's rotation and allowed a region of the sky to be photographed without apparent movement. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1908 for producing the first colour photographic plate.
Kirchhoff in Heidelberg and with Helmholtz in Berlin. Lippmann joined the Faculty of Science in Paris in 1878. Despite the fact that he never received his teacher's certificate, he was appointed Professor of Mathematical Physics at the Sorbonne in 1883. Three years later (1886) he became Professor of Experimental Physics, succeeding Jamin, and he was appointed Director of the Research Laboratory which was subsequently transferred to the Sorbonne. He retained this position until his death.
It is interesting to note that Gabriel Lippmann was the Marie Curie's thesis advisor, while he was the head of the physical science department at the Sorbonne, where Marie was studying. That time Lippmann did early studies in a field in which Pierre Curie and his brother were pioneers: electrical effects in crystals. A pillar of the French tradition of patronage, Lippmann let Marie use his laboratory for her thesis work and helped her find other sources of support. Marie made quite an impression on Lippmann, so he decided to introduce her to one of his best students, Pierre Curie. This made tremendous influence on Marie's and Pierre's future.

http://www.mujweb.cz/www/nobelfyzika/1908.htm
Gabriel Lippmann (16. srpna 1845 – 13. Pozdìji sestrojil i reverzibilní elektrokapilární motor. Zkoumal setrvaènost statické elektøiny, elektrickou koncentraci plynù a piezoelektøinu. Z oblasti molekulární fyziky je znám jeho objev termoendoosmózy. Ke svým experimentùm si Gabriel Lippmann vždy konstruoval mìøící pøístroje sám a pro svùj astronomický výzkum mimo jiné zkonstruoval tzv. coelostat a uranograf.

Three years later he became Professor of Experimental Physics, succeeding Jamin, and he was appointed Director of the Research Laboratory which was subsequently transferred to the Sorbonne. He retained this position until his death.
Lippmann, of original and independent mind, made many valuable fundamental contributions to many different branches of physics, especially electricity, thermodynamics, optics and photochemistry. In Heidelberg he studied the relationship between electrical and capillary phenomena: this led to the development, amongst other instruments, of his extraordinarily sensitive capillary electrometer.
In 1895, Lippmann evolved a method of eliminating the personal equation in measurements of time, using photographic registration, and he studied the eradication of irregularities of pendulum clocks, devising a method of comparing the times of oscillation of two pendulums of nearly equal period. He contributed to astronomy with his invention of the coelostat, a device which immobilizes the image of a star and its surrounding stars so that a photograph may be taken. He was also responsible for many more ingenious devices and improvements to standard instruments to the benefit of many branches of physics.
His work is mainly recorded in communications to the Paris Academy of Sciences where his papers are noted for their conciseness and originality. His method of reproducing colours in photography, based on the interference phenomenon, gained him the Nobel Prize for Physics for 1908.

Lippmann, Gabriel
On August 16, 1845, Gabriel Lippmann was born in Hollerich, Luxembourg. Since both his parents were French, his family moved to Paris when he was still very young. Gabriel received his early schooling at home and did not excel in his later schooling because of his tendency to not work at anything that was not of interest to him. Because of this tendency, Gabriel Lippmann failed the test that would have enabled him to become a teacher.
