Lipmann, Fritz Albert
(b. June 12, 1899, Königsberg, Ger. [now Kaliningrad, Russia]d. July 24, 1986, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., U.S.), German-born American biochemist, who received (with Sir Hans Krebs) the 1953 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of coenzyme A, an important catalytic substance involved in the cellular conversion of food into energy. Lipmann earned an M.D. degree (1924) and a Ph.D. degree (1927) from the University of Berlin. He conducted research in the laboratory of the biochemist Otto Meyerhof at the University of Heidelberg (1927-30) and then did research at the Biological Institute of the Carlsberg Foundation (Carlsbergfondets Biologiske Institut), Copenhagen (1932-39), and at the Cornell Medical School, New York City (1939-41). At Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston (1941-57), where he directed the biochemistry research department, and as professor of biological chemistry at the Harvard Medical School (1949-57), Lipmann found a catalytically active, heat-stable factor in pigeon liver extracts. He subsequently isolated (1947), named, and determined the molecular structure (1953) of this factor, coenzyme A (or CoA), which is now known to be bound to acetic acid as the end product of sugar and fat breakdown in the absence of oxygen. Coenzyme A is one of the most important substances involved in cellular metabolism; it helps in the conversion of amino acids, steroids, fatty acids, and hemoglobins into energy.

Lipmann, Fritz Albert

Lipmann, Fritz
He was born on June 12th, 1899, at Koenigsberg, Germany. He was the son of Leopold Lipmann and his wife Gertrud Lachmanski.
In 1930 Lipmann went back to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin to work as a research assistant in the laboratory of Albert Fischer, who was interested in applying biochemical methods to tissue culture. Fischer was then getting ready to occupy a new Institute in Copenhagen and he asked Lipmann to accompany him there, which he did in 1932. The years 1931 and 1932, however, he spent as a Rockefeller Fellow in the laboratory of P. A. Levene at the Rockefeller Institute in New York, where he identified serine phosphate as the constituent of phosphoproteins which contains the phosphate.
When he went to Copenhagen in 1932, as Research Associate in the Biological Institute of the Carlsberg Foundation there, Lipmann became interested in the metabolism of fibroblasts and this prompted him to investigate the Pasteur effect, which led to important papers on the mechanism of this reaction and on the part played by glycolysis in the metabolism of the cells of embryos.
In 1939 Lipmann became Research Associate in the Department of Biochemistry, Cornell Medical School, New York, and in 1941 joined the research staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, first as a Research Associate in the Department of Surgery, then heading his own group in the Biochemical Research Laboratory of the Hospital. In 1949 he became Professor of Biological Chemistry at Harvard Medical School, Boston. In 1957, he was appointed a Member and Professor of the Rockefeller Institute, New York, a post which he still holds.

Biokémiai kutatások
Biokémiai kutatások: Hans Adolf Krebs és Fritz Albert Lipmann
Orvosi-élettani Nobel-díj: 1953
A természettudósok, írók, és az emberiség békéjéért harcolók legmagasabb kitüntetése a Nobel-díj, melyet minden év decemberében, az alapító halálának évfordulóján adnak át Stockholmban. 1953-ban két biokémikus részesült a megtisztelõ elismerésben, egyikük Hans Adolf Krebs német származású amerikai biokémikus. Legjelentõsebb kutatási eredménye egy reakcióláncnak a leírása volt, amely a szénhidrát-, fehérje- és zsíranyagcsere köztes termékeinek általános, végsõ aerob lebomlását szemlélteti. Vizsgálatainak alapjait Szent-Györgyi Albert, a magyar Nobel-díjas tudós szerves savakra vonatkozó kutatásai képezték, ezért a felfedezett citrátkör, illetve citromsavciklus elnevezése is "Szent-Györgyi-Krebs körfolyamat" lett. 1953-ban a citromsavciklus felfedezéséért Krebs Nobel-díjat kapott, megosztva egy másik biokémia-tudóssal. Fritz Albert Lipmann (1899-1986) "A coenzim-A-nak és az intermedier-anyagcserében játszott szerepének felfedezéséért" indoklással részesült 1953-ban Nobel-díjban. Lipmann német egyetemeken tanulta az orvostudományt, Amszterdamban gyógyszertani ismereteket szerzett, kémiát pedig ismét Németországban tanult. Neves német kutatóintézetekben dolgozott, világhírû tudósok irányításával. 1942-tõl New Yorkban, majd Bostonban kutat, késõbb a Harvard Egyetem biokémia-professzora. Kiemelkedõ tevékenysége volt a "magas energiájú foszfátkötés" fogalmának bevezetése. Megállapította, hogy a sejtanyagcserében szrepet játszó adenozintrifoszfát (ATP) foszfátkötése magas energiát hordoz, s a kötés felbomlása energiát szolgáltat a biokémiai folyamatokhoz...
