Wu, Chien-Shiung (1912-1997)

This entry contributed by Michel Barran Chinese-American physicist who confirmed experimentally that parity is not conserved by the weak nuclear force. This result gave important experimental confirmation of the conservation of the vector current in nuclear beta decay. Wu was born in Shanghai in 1912, and obtained her B.S. degree from the National University of China. She moved to America in 1936, where she studied under Ernest Lawrence at the University of California, Berkeley, and obtained her Ph.D. in 1940. She then taught at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, and later at Princeton University. She was the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Princeton University. In 1946, Wu became a staff member at Columbia University and became professor of physics in 1957. After reading an article by Tsung-Dao Lee and Yang (1956), she demonstrated that the direction of emission of beta rays is strongly correlated with the direction of the emitting nucleus, showing that parity is not conserved in beta disintegration (Wu 1957). She confirmed experimentally in 1963 the theory of conservation of vector current in beta decay proposed by Richard Feynman and Murray Gell-Mann in 1958. She observed that electromagnetic radiation from the annihilation of positrons and electrons is polarized, as predicted by Dirac's theory of the electron.

Lee, Tsung-Dao
