Citation for Leon Lederman honorary degree
Leon Lederman received a honorary degree from Clark University on May 17, 1998. The citation was read by Stan Geschwind. Leon M. Lederman
Doctor of Science (honoris causa) Mr. President, I have the honor of presenting Leon M. Lederman, physicist, educator, science administrator, writer, humorist, punster, and Nobel Laureate. Leon, your role as scientist extends far beyond your individual experimental research and international leadership in the planning of scientific research in particle physics. During your ten years as Director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, you initiated outreach programs in mathematics and science education for neighboring communities so that others could share your love of science and learning. You were the driving force behind the founding of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and the Teacher's Academy of Mathematics and Science. And as past President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science you continue to be tireless in your efforts to educate the general public on the importance of science education to the intellectual and economic health of our society. Leon, your sweet moments of success in the quest for scientific truth have been coupled with a quick wit and sense of humor which you have conveyed to your colleagues and the general public. You have served your country and humanity well.

A tremendously entertaining book covering much of the history of physics by one of the best known particle physicists. Lederman's book is interspersed with some of the most humorous stories I've ever read in a science book and I can't resist sharing two of them here. In an imaginary conversation with the greek philosopher Democritus, Lederman is talking about how elusive the Higgs particle is, and comments that the book's title refers to this particle, but that his publisher wouldn't allow th...

Portraits of Great American Scientists

This is a great read not only for young adults but for anyone who wants to learn about why scientists are drawn to science. You also get easy-to-follow lessons on science that the average person can understand. We get glimpses into their personal life and how they overcame whatever barriers were in place to achieve what they did.

Symmetry and the Beautiful Universe
Leon M. Lederman and Christopher T. Hill When scientists peer through telescopes at the distant stars in outer space or use gigantic particle-accelerators to analyze the smallest components of matter, they find that the same laws of physics govern the whole universe at all times and all places. Physicists recognize that the eternal, ubiquitous constancy of the laws of physics is symmetry . Symmetry is now seen to be the basic underlying principle that defines the laws of nature, and controls the entire universe. This all-important insight is one of the greatest conceptual breakthroughs in modern physics and is the basis of contemporary efforts to discover a grand unified theory, such as superstrings, to explain all the laws of physics. Nobel Laureate Leon M. Lederman and theoretical physicist Christopher T. Hill explain the supremely elegant concept of symmetry and all its profound ramifications to art, music, and life on Earth, from the smallest shards of matter, the quarks and leptons, to the universe at large. This eloquent and accessible popular science book not only clearly describes concepts normally reserved only for physicists and mathematicians, but also instills an appreciation for the profound beauty of the universe’s inherent design. Central to the story of symmetry is an obscure, ascetic, and unpretentious, but extremely gifted German mathematician named Emmy

Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy INTRODUCTION Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee, Thank you for the opportunity to testify today on behalf of the National Science Education Enhancement Act. LEON LEDERMAN’S BACKGROUND For over 30 years I was a research physicist and university professor who really taught—even or especially Physics 101, freshman physics. However, I spent 10 years as Director of Fermilab, outside of Chicago where I managed the construction of the TEVATRON, the world’s most powerful atom smasher. I also spent a dozen years as consultant to the Department of Defense on issues of national defense. I believe I understand the awesome power of science to shape the course of human affairs. I have been deeply involved in science education for the past 20 years. As Fermilab Director, I made sure that our laboratory reached out to the nearby community to make sure they understood what our particle accelerators and supercomputers were all about. I brought high school students in every Saturday, to hear lectures from our researchers and to get their hands on what we did. We did lots of workshop with local teachers, and provided the opportunity so they could work on one of our experiments for a summer. We even built a special science education center, and they were kind enough to name it after me when I retired.
