LEON M. LEDERMAN
Coping with the Consequences of our Own Ingenuity
The scientific revolution in the 20th century entered a new phase; it became universal, the unique world culture, laced with optimism, adventure and passion. The associated technologies - advancing hand-in-hand - can make us comfortable, immortal, enabling access to a vast ocean of knowledge and bringing us, in our living room and at the squeak of a mouse, all the works of literature (soon in any language); also all of the art, music, philosophy, all the summaries and analyses of history, the values weighed and accumulated in every epoch, in every place on the globe. The paradox lies in the indifference of our populations to so much of this. A part of the blame stems from the inequities in the distribution of these comforts and capabilities. But even in the populations of industrial nations, the glories of humanity's achievements are drowned in a sea of trivialities, of mindless and passive entertainment. We are inundated by a tide of unsustainable consumerism. The wonders of nature revealed pass us by. Thus we lose the value of the heritage of older experiences, we lose the exposure to the spiritual beauty of nature, but we also lose the personal empowerment that comes from scientific thinking. That ignorance and hostility towards the use of intellect and reason, and this is the most chilling of all paradox, is vested in our leadership at a time in our history when need for marshalling vast thinking skills is most required. This is the best yet evidence of the failure of education.

ADDRESS TO THE PARTICIPANTS AT THE LOCARNO CONGRESS
April 30, 1997
Although the end of the millennium is a symbolic episode, it coincides with dynamic changes in society, changes in the way people live, the way organizations work. These changes are generated by technology and, most significantly, by information storage, retrieval and communications. As we prepare to celebrate the 21st century, we note how our lives have been influenced by the advance of science in the 20th. We have progressed from early death by infectious diseases to late death by cancer, heart attack and stroke. We notice that the role of national governments is giving way in economic activity to multinational businesses and their markets. We are also progressing towards a more crowded, warmer, more connected planet. Environmental change, population growth and the development of nations are major problems which will have a decisive influence on life in the 21st century. The function of Universities : to acquire new knowledge and to disseminate this through teaching has always had an overarching goal - to produce graduates who can cope with the world into which they emerge. In view of the awesome implications of the changes we have sketched, it is time to rethink the traditional way Universities have operated. There is now, more than ever, a basic conflict between the training of research specialists who must advance the various scientific and technological disciplines and the need for generalists who can operate in real world problems which recognize no disciplinary borders.

The Leon M. Lederman Collection contains the multi-media records of the history (1922 - present) and administration (1978-89) of the second Director of Fermilab. Lederman's experiences are linked with his long-term affiliation with Columbia University and New York City. His early award-winning research in high-energy physics brought him into national science policy circles and in 1963 he proposed the idea that became the National Accelerator Laboratory. In 1977 Lederman led the team that discovered the bottom quark at Fermilab. The following year he was named Director and his administration brought Fermilab into its position of scientific prominence by 1983 with the achievement of the world's most powerful superconducting accelerator, the Tevatron . In 1988 Lederman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics During his term as Director, Lederman emphasized the importance of math and science education as outreach to the neighboring communities. He then initiated the Saturday Morning Physics lectures and subsequently founded the Friends of Fermilab , the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy , and the Teacher's Academy for Mathematics and Science.

Thank you, Mr. President. Your reference to Abba Eban reminds me of an occasion somewhat like this when we were both participating and waiting on line for the process of coming up to the platform, and I asked Mr. Eban, the distinguished ambassador: How many of these honorary degrees do you have?
Leon M. Lederman He said: 27. And then he said: You know, he said, when I left Washington to go back to my country, I put all these resplendent capes that they give me into a suitcase, which was stolen at the airport. He said: The only regret I had is not taking a photograph of the thief when he opened the suitcase and tried to figure out what it is he had stolen. Well, these capes are admittedly not very useful, but they're symbolic, and it's symbolism which certainly scientists and artists and so on share and respect for this. I thought hard about what to say in a short time to express my appreciation for this honor and this distinguished University. I could give you some advice or I could tell you some jokes. Yes, I know your vote. So let me combine these, first by a story of two university graduates who happened to play varsity baseball. They went on to distinguished careers, both of them, in professional baseball. They grew old together, very friendly.

ROBERTO CASTILLO.
