Interview with Prof. Lederberg,
Winner of the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine
conducted by Lev Pevzner
March 20, 1996
Lev Pevzner - You were born in New Jersey. Where were your parents born? Prof. Joshua Lederberg - In Israel. They came to the US in 1924. LP - Did they settle down and find jobs here right away? JL - Well, I don't really know the details. My father was an orthodox rabbi, and I think he had a very temporary position in Montclair after I was born, and then six months later he got a more permanent position in a synagogue in Washington Heights, which is when we moved to New York City LP - Did your parents have a large formative influence on you? JL - Certainly so. My father was quite an idealistic person. He was committed to a religious vocation, and I reacted quite strongly to that: I was as early as I could remember interested in scientific and secular affairs. We still shared a great deal. He eventually gave in, and said "Joshua, I guess there are many ways to follow the Torah , and if you want to seek truth through science, that's alright too."

Lederberg, Joshua
Joshua Lederberg, 1958 Hulton Deutsch Collection/Corbis (b. May 23, 1925, Montclair, N.J., U.S.) , American geneticist, pioneer in the field of bacterial genetics, who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (with George W. Beadle and Edward L. Tatum ) for discovering the mechanisms of genetic recombination in bacteria. Lederberg studied under Tatum at Yale (Ph.D., 1948) and taught at the University of Wisconsin (1947-59), where he established a department of medical genetics. In 1959 he joined the faculty of the Stanford Medical School, serving as director of the Kennedy Laboratories of Molecular Medicine there from 1962 to 1978, when he moved to New York City to become president of Rockefeller University. He held that post until 1990. With Tatum he published "Gene Recombination in Escherichia coli " (1946), in which he reported that the mixing of two different strains of a bacterium resulted in genetic recombination between them and thus to a new, crossbred strain of the bacterium. Scientists had previously thought that bacteria only reproduced asexually i.e.

The Oswald T. Avery Collection
Finding Aid ... All Visuals Oswald Theodore Avery (1877-1955) was a distinguished bacteriologist and research physician and one of the founders of immunochemistry. He is best known, however, as a discoverer that deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) serves as genetic material. The Oswald T. Avery Collection is a part of the Joshua Lederberg Papers , which are at the National Library of Medicine and available digitally. The collection was assembled by Nobel laureate Dr. Lederberg because of the strong connection between Dr. Avery's work and his own. The work of Avery and his lab, observes Dr. Lederberg, was "the historical platform of modern DNA research" and "betokened the molecular revolution in genetics and biomedical science generally." Documents in the Oswald T. Avery Collection range from 1910 to 1990s, the majority dating from the 1940s and from the 1960s to the present day. The collection contains laboratory notes, research reports, published articles and books, correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, speeches, photographic prints, and audiovisual materials. From 1941 to 1944 he studied at Columbia College, where he obtained his B.A. with honours in Zoology (premedical course), and from 1944 to 1946 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University Medical School. Here he carried out part-time research with Professor F. J. Ryan in the Department of Zoology. Subsequently he went to the Department of Microbiology and Botany at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., as Research Fellow of the Jane Coffin Childs Fund for Medical Research and, during 1946-1947, as a graduate student with Professor E. L. Tatum. He was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1948.
In 1947, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Genetics at the University of Wisconsin, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1950 and Professor in 1954. He organized the Department of Medical Genetics in 1957, of which he was Chairman during 1957-1958.

American geneticist who, with Tatum , showed that different E. Coli bacteria strains could be combined such that their genetic material intermingled. For this discovery, he shared the 1958 Nobel prize in medicine with Tatum , he and Beadle . In 1952, he showed that bacteriophages could transfer genetic material between bacteria, a phenomenon he named transduction. Beadle Tatum
