He was awarded the Nobel Prize The Nobel Prizes (pronounced no-BELL ) are awarded annually to people who have done outstanding research, invented groundbreaking techniques or equipment, or made outstanding contributions to society. It is generally regarded as the supreme commendation in the world today. The prizes were instituted by the final will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist, and the inventor of dynamite. He signed his will at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris on November 27, 1895. He was shocked to see how his invention was used for destructive purposes and wanted the prizes to be awarded to those who served mankind well.

Joshua Lederberg Pioneer of microbial genetics: Joshua Lederberg (1925-) by King-Thom Chung, Department of Biology, The University of Memphis Joshua Lederberg was awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology for his discovery of "sexual recombination" in bacteria (bacterial conjugation). This award was shared with Drs. George Wells Beadle (1903-1989) (1) and Edward Lawrie Tatum (1909-1975) (3). Conjugation is mediated by the presence of the F+ factor (fertility factor or plasmid) and requires cell to cell contact. The plasmid can reside inside the donor bacterium as an extrachromosomal element with its own origin of replication or it can be integrated into the bacterial chromosome. When integrated in the chromosome, replicative transfer begins within the F plasmid region at the oriT region and continues into the chromosomal region. Thus the chromosomal genes as well as F plasmid genes are transferred to the recipient cell during conjugation. Via a process of recombination ( Hfr and coined the term plasmid in 1950 to describe extrachromosomal genetic elements. However, the term was not widely accepted until the 1970s when bacterial drug resistance was shown to be mediated by self-transmissible plasmids and became a major medical problem.

Joshua Lederberg
Joshua Lederberg
American geneticist, pioneer in the field of bacterial genetics, who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (with George W. Beadle and Edward L. Tatum) for discovering the mechanisms of genetic recombination in bacteria.
Lederberg studied under Tatum at Yale (Ph.D., 1948) and taught at the University of Wisconsin (1947-59), where he established a department of medical genetics. In 1959 he joined the faculty of the Stanford Medical School, serving as director of the Kennedy Laboratories of Molecular Medicine there from 1962 to 1978, when he moved to New York City to become president of Rockefeller University. He held that post until 1990. With Tatum he published "Gene Recombination in Escherichia coli" (1946), in which he reported that the mixing of two different strains of a bacterium resulted in genetic recombination between them and thus to a new, crossbred strain of the bacterium. Scientists had previously thought that bacteria only reproduced asexuallyi.e., by cells splitting in two; Lederberg and Tatum showed that they could also reproduce sexually, and that bacterial genetic systems are similar to those of multicellular organisms. While biologists who had not previously believed that "sex" existed in bacteria such as E. coli were still confirming Lederberg's discovery, he and his student Norton D. Zinder reported another and equally surprising finding. In the paper "Genetic Exchange in Salmonella" (1952), they revealed that certain bacteriophages (bacteria-infecting viruses) were capable of carrying a bacterial gene from one bacterium to another, a phenomenon they termed transduction.

"What do you think is the most pressing health issue related to infectious disease?" Joshua Lederberg, M.D.
Chronically, the rise of antibiotic-resistance is happening under our eyes. We are still not adequately mobilized to conserve the utility of the antibiotics we have, nor to encourage the development and dissemination of new ones. Nor do we have anything consequential in the long term for viral infections. Acutely, we face the possibility of crisis almost overnight, with the ever looming possibility of reappearance of the likes of 1918 influenza. At least we have a reasonable surveillance system in place, for much of the world - though few localities would match Hong Kong in celerity of response. There is a wide range of alternative contingencies, including a re-acceleration of AIDS as new strains bearing drug resistance or other biological properties come into play. My greatest fear is that the world still does not have a decisive regime to implement the Biological Weapons Disarmament Convention.
