Because of the very magnitude of its work and the great number of its activities, the image of Red Cross tends to become blurred. He worked alone among the wounded in the church at Castiglione for hours, but was unable to keep up with the flow of men with damaged bodies. He went out into the streets and got together a group of women to work with him. Three years later, in 1862, Dunant published a little book

The terms Red Cross and Red Crescent are often used as short names for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement , or its two leading international organs, the ICRC and the IFRCS . This page is about the symbol itself, see respective articles for information about the organizations and movements. The Red Cross is a symbol which under the Geneva conventions is to be placed on humanitarian and medical vehicles and buildings to protect them from military attack. The Red Cross flag is not to be confused with the St George cross which is the flag of England Barcelona Freiburg and several other places. The red cross of the St George cross extends to the edge of the flag, whereas the red cross on the Red Cross flag does not. Originally only the Red Cross (being the flag of Switzerland reversed) was to be used as a symbol of the Geneva conventions, but Muslim nations (primarily the Ottoman Empire , later Turkey ) objected to this, and as a result an additional symbol (the Red Crescent ) was to be provided for. Edited Abstract
The objective of this project is to enable the League of Red Cross Societies to undertake a comprehensive study of their role in society today. Specifically, the League will attempt to determine the present image, status, tasks, and cooperation of all Red Cross bodies, look into the division of work between national societies and public authorities, determine if the role of the Red Cross in the community today is what it ought to be, and assess the future role of the Red Cross.

  • Visit the IFRC website here at www.ifrc.org At the end of the First World war large areas of Europe were in chaos - economies had been destroyed, populations were being decimated by epidemics, vast numbers of destitute refugees and stateless people roamed the continent. National Societies turned their attention to helping famine victims and the homeless, especially in Eastern Europe. Few countries had health ministries at the time, and there were no real international bodies capable of organising large-scale relief operations. Yet it was the creation of one such international organisation, the League of Nations that led to a major development in the Red Cross. One of the leaders of the American Red Cross, Henry P Davison, convened an international medical conference in 1919 at which he proposed "to federate the Red Cross Societies of the different countries into an organisation comparable to that of the League of Nations, in view of a permanent worldwide crusade to improve health, prevent sickness, and alleviate suffering". Go back to top Davison's proposal gained immediate support, the League of red Cross Societies was established, with headquarters in Paris, France. THE BAHAMAS RED CROSS SOCIETY
The Bahamas branch of the International Red Cross began its work in 1939 under the auspices of the British Red Cross. The Original purpose was to serve the relief needs of Allied troops in the vicinity and particularly those stationed in The Bahamas. In 1945, as World War II ended, priorities shifted from treating wounded soldiers and sailors to treating and controlling disease and malnutrition. The Red Cross fell naturally into service in these areas and established a number of services to aid and care for children, the Center for Deaf Children among them. The Branch also provided service to the Discharged prisoners Committee, the Child Protection Committee and the Boys Industrial School Visiting Committee. It was during this period that the Branch began to attract and actively enlist the voluntary services of public-spirited philanthropic citizens and residents. Early supporters of the organization’s work included Dr. Jackson Burnside and Dr. Cleveland Eneas, both of whom supplied dental services to the Schools Medical Service, which the Red Cross provided. Other medical services were provided by Dr. G. Worrell and Dr. C. Gordon.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was born in 1859 and had as its goal the establishment of national societies in as many nations as possible, all having the common mission of alleviating suffering in times of conflict. There were 145 national Red Cross Societies around the world today, all of which belonged to the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies based in Geneva, Switzerland. (13 3005, 3006) Since 1976, the Canadian Red Cross Society had received monthly copies of the bulletin published by the ICRC. Specifically, the Canadian Red Cross Society received Bulletin No. 25, published by the ICRC in February of 1978. The bulletins were kept in the headquarters library and copies were also distributed to a mailing list. The library was open at all times to members of the public. (13-3006, 3007) Bulletin No. 25 made clear that the ICRC did not compile the statistics being attributed to it in Did Six Million Really Die?. (13-3007) On cross-examination, de Grace testified that a person coming to the Canadian Red Cross headquarters would have been met in the entrance by a receptionist. To obtain access to the library, the person would first have to ask whether there was a library, then would have to be directed to it by the receptionist. There was no public advertising of the library. It was a small library, reserved for Red Cross people, volunteer staff and the public that was inquiring about certain areas of Red Cross activity. No matter how strong the family ties, moves and separations often put strain on relationships. The Red Cross can help with immediate personal and family problems. Red Cross acts as a liaison between the serviceperson, no matter where they're stationed, and their family back home. A Red Cross presence is maintained at U.S. military bases around the world. Families back home simply have to contact the nearest Red Cross chapter for assistance. In the event of an emergency, critical accident, illness, or death in a serviceperson's immediate family, the Red Cross should be called at once. The Red Cross is equipped to verify the situation and relay an emergency leave request to proper military authorities. It is then up the commanding officer to decide whether or not to grant leave. Regular communication between servicepersons and their families is ordinarily no problem, but sometimes, a long time with no word can become worrisome. The Red Cross can help. Through our worldwide communications network, we can communicate with the installation or ship where the serviceperson is stationed. You'll get a report on his or her welfare to give you peace of mind. Also, servicepersons can request the same service related to families back home.

The basis for all of OTC's services stems from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's mission to relieve human suffering and promote world peace. The organization consists of three main components, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and over 175 Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies. Though each plays a different role, they unite under the common goal of promoting worldwide humanitarian assistance to victims of manmade and natural disasters. Birth of a Movement
The Red Cross Movement was founded by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant in 1863. After witnessing a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, Dunant wrote A Memory of Solferino, which described the plight of victims of war. In it he proposed the establishment of a civilian volunteer relief corps to care for wounded soldiers. Dunant's efforts lead to the calling of an international conference to implement these recommendations. Thus, ICRC was born. To define its unity, ICRC adopted the symbol of the red cross on a white field (the reverse of the Swiss flag) to designate activities and services provided by the International Red Cross Movement. To this day, the ICRC is a private institution headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

    its Symbol, and Clara Barton
In 1859, Swiss businessman Henri Dunant (1828-1910) visited the northern Italian battlefield of Solferino and was deeply affected by the impact of war on the lives and dignity of both combatant and civilian. The memoir he wrote, A Memory of Solferino , inspired the 1863 founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Near the end of his book Dunant writes: "But why have I told of all these scenes of pain and distress, and perhaps aroused painful emotions in my readers? Why have I lingered with seeming complacency over lamentable pictures, tracing their details with what may appear desperate fidelity? It is a natural question. Perhaps I might answer it by another: Would it not be possible, in time of peace and quiet, to form relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime by zealous, devoted and thoroughly qualified volunteers?" The aim of Dunant's proposals was twofold: on the one hand, to create in all countries voluntary "relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime " and, on the other, to formulate an "international principle, sanctioned by a Convention inviolate in character, " which would serve as the basis and support for the relief societies.

General Alfred M. Gruenther retired after 38 years in the U.S. Army on December 31, 1956, and on the following day he became President of the American Red Cross. His final military assignment was as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, a position which he occupied at SHAPE Headquarters in Paris from July 1953 until he retired. He brought with him a warm enthusiasm for the Red Cross. Having seen the organization function effectively during World War II and in peacetime, he had been deeply impressed with the humanitarian principles underlying the world-wide programs of the organization. Early in his administration General Gruenther became convinced that one of his principle duties would be the telling of the Red Cross story. His strenuous schedule took him back and forth across the United States scores of times. On June 25, 1963, at Elkhart, Indiana, he filled his 748th speaking engagement as the American Red Cross President.
