International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies,
original name LEAGUE OF RED CROSS SOCIETIES, also called (1983-91) LEAGUE OF RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES, international organization responsible for encouraging the formation of and aiding national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. The federation shared the Nobel Prize for Peace with the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1963; at the time its name was the League of Red Cross Societies. The league was founded in 1919 in response to the immense scope of activities by various national Red Cross societies; an organization was needed to serve as a liaison between the societies so that they could work together. In 1983 this organization's name was changed to the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in response to the use of Red Crescent in Muslim countries. The name was changed again, in 1991, to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The main goal of the federation is to facilitate the humanitarian activities of national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in nonconflict areas; the organization thus focuses its efforts on victims of natural and man-made disasters such as famine or hurricanes. The federation also encourages and assists nations to establish Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.

The International Federation was founded in 1919 in Paris in the aftermath of World War I. The war had shown a need for close cooperation between Red Cross Societies, which, through their humanitarian activities on behalf of prisoners of war and combatants, had attracted millions of volunteers and built a large body of expertise. A devastated Europe could not afford to lose such a resource.
It was Henry Davison, president of the American Red Cross War Committee, who proposed forming a federation of these National Societies. An international medical conference initiated by Davison resulted in the birth of the League of Red Cross Societies, which was renamed in October 1983 to the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and then in November 1991 to become the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The first objective of the Federation was to improve the health of people in countries that had suffered greatly during the four years of war. Its goals were "to strengthen and unite, for health activities, already-existing Red Cross Societies and to promote the creation of new Societies"

The Red Cross in a Changing World
To this hall tonight have been invited men and women representative of the four corners of our world. Each person present has rendered some service to the cause of peace. Such an undertaking imposes humility and suggests that we speak simply to this world forum about the common purpose that concerns us all. Goodwill is often inarticulate. Fortunately, we are blessed with individuals and organizations to express the longings of little peoples in all lands. The gift of great and continuing institutions is a splendid gift. We are "inheritors of a tradition", and in our hands is responsibility that the lustre does not dim, nor the shadow shrink. Before making any reference to the League of Red Cross Societies, I would like to speak in the highest terms of the work which has been done for the past one hundred years by the International Committee of the Red Cross and for the work it continues to carry on ever with increased fervor. The International Committee is that great body of Swiss citizens which acts as intermediary between belligerents in the time of war, and as arbitrators of disputes in time of peace. To quote Mr. Boissier, president of the International Committee, at the inauguration ceremony of the Centenary of the Red Cross, "The International Committee will endeavor, with untiring perseverance, to obtain universal acceptance and application of the Geneva Conventions. These conventions, instruments fashioned and perfected by experience, were forged to protect and save innocent victims of war. Each victim is considered as a separate entity and assisted in his individual suffering, from which it is necessary to save him by stretching out a helping hand. In this fashion, the text of the Convention is transformed into a veritable causeway along which representatives from Geneva travel to bring comfort and perhaps salvation to the wounded or imprisoned."

Since the Red Cross has figured four times in the award of the Nobel Peace Prize ( , and 1963), as well as in the award to Henri Dunant (1901), and has therefore been made the subject of various presentation speeches and Nobel lectures which give details of its inception, history, and activities, the following brief summary of its origins and present organization is intended as a frame of reference for all four of these awards rather than as the typical history ordinarily included for each award to an organization. Origins
In February of 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, the [Geneva Public Welfare Society] set up a committee of five Swiss citizens to look into the ideas offered by Henri Dunant in his book Un Souvenir de Solferino - ideas dealing with protection of the sick and wounded during combat. The committee had as its members: Guillaume Henri Dufour (1787-1875), a general of the Swiss army and a writer of military tracts who became the committee's president for its first year and its honorary president thereafter; Gustave Moynier (1826-1910), a young lawyer and president of the sponsoring Public Welfare Society, who from this time on devoted his life to Red Cross work; Louis Appia (1818-1898) and Theodore Maunoir (1806-1869), both medical doctors; and Henri Dunant himself.
Guided by Moynier's talent for organization, the committee called an international conference for October of 1863 which, with sixteen nations represented, adopted various pertinent resolutions and principles, along with an international emblem, and appealed to all nations to form voluntary units to help wartime sick and wounded. These units eventually became the National Red Cross Societies, and the Committee of Five itself eventually became the

About the ICRC ICRC activities The ICRC worldwide Focus ... 2000 - No. 840 International Review of the Red Cross No. 840, p. 1053-1077 by Christophe Lanord The legal status of National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
Christophe Lanord, who has a PhD in Law, is an independent consultant on humanitarian issues. From 1992 to 1999, he was Legal Officer in the Secretariat of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. This article is based on the author’s doctoral thesis (University of Clermont-Ferrand): Christophe Lanord, Le statut juridique des Soci©t©s nationales de la Croix- Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge, ‰ditions de la Chapelle, Gen¨ve/Thoiras, 1999, 545 pages; also available on the Internet at ‹ http://lanord.free.fr ›. The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the International Federation.
Many texts about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement start with a reference to Henry Dunant, maybe because the author expects it to prompt his or her inspiration. If the subject of the text is the legal status of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, this reference is indeed fully justified. In his masterpiece A Memory of Solferino , Dunant put forward two proposals: he called for the inviolability of the armed forces’ medical personnel to be guaranteed, and for the formation of relief societies to bring care to wounded and sick soldiers in the field. The first proposal has been a landmark in the development of modern international humanitarian law, with the 1864 Geneva Convention and its successive versions, while the second proposal led to the creation of Red Cross Societies and, later on, Red Crescent Societies, also called “National Societies”. Dunant urged that such societies be constituted in advance, in peacetime, so that they could step in as soon as an armed conflict began.

He successfully arranged a truce in 1949 between the newly partitioned state of Israel and invading Arab nations that included Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. During that time he worked closely with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, who were assisting war refugees. Encyclopedia Definition: Red Cross
The terms Red Cross and Red Crescent are often used as short names for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement The Red Cross is a symbol which under the Geneva conventions is to be placed on humanitarian and medical vehicles and buildings to protect them from military attack. The Red Cross flag is not to be confused with the St George cross which is the flag of England Barcelona Freiburg and several other places. The red cross of the St George cross extends to the edge of the flag, whereas the red cross on the Red Cross flag does not. Originally only the Red Cross (being the flag of Switzerland reversed) was to be used as a symbol of the Geneva conventions, but Muslim nations (primarily the Ottoman Empire , later Turkey ) objected to this, and as a result an additional symbol (the Red Crescent ) was to be provided for. Later Persia (now Iran ) managed to have a red lion and sun (the lion and sun being the symbol of Persia) added to the list of available symbols; though the symbol no longer being used by Iran has fallen into disuse in favour of the Red Crescent, Iran has in the past reserved the right to take it up again at any time. Israel then requested the addition of a Red Star of David , arguing that since Christian and Muslim symbols were recognized the corresponding Jewish symbol should be as well. This symbol is the one currently used by the Israeli Red Cross, but it is not recognized under international humanitarian law. The Red Cross movement has rejected this Israeli request, reasoning that if Jews (or another group) were to be given another symbol, there would be no end to the number of religious or other groups claiming a symbol for themselves. That would detract from the original intention of the Red Cross symbol, which was to be a single symbol to mark vehicles and buildings protected on humanitarian grounds. In response, the Red Cross movement is in the process of developing a new symbol, which will be without any religious connontations and also easily recognizable on the battlefield; once the Red Cross movement has adopted the symbol it will then be presented to the State Parties to the Geneva Conventions for amendment of the treaties.

Introduction Red Cross , international humanitarian agency dedicated, in time of war, to alleviating the sufferings of wounded soldiers, civilians, and prisoners of war. In time of peace, it renders medical aid and other help to people afflicted by major disasters such as floods, earthquakes, epidemics, and famines and performs other public service functions. II. Organization The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement consists of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), a group of up to 25 Swiss citizens, with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the more than 160 national Red Cross societies; and the Geneva-based International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (known until 1993 as the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) which coordinates peacetime activities of the national societies. The International Conference of the Red Cross, usually held every four years in different countries, brings together representatives of the Red Cross organizations and those governments that have ratified the Geneva conventions. In 1986 the Movement's name was changed to include the Red Crescent, the organization's name in most Muslim nations.
