Ernest Lawrence about the time he came to the University of California at Berkeley, August 1931. Opening remarks by MR. SPROUL.
Copy of 1935 photograph of Ernest O. Lawrence. Our interest in the event we are celebrating does not arise solely from the fact that the Nobel Prize is the highest scholarly honor that the world has to offer to any man or woman for intellectual achievement. We recognize this fact, naturally, and pay our sincere respects to the young teacher who has made it possible for us to share some of the prestige which this award bestows. But, beyond this local and personal consideration, we recognize a real and special privilege in participating with representatives of our sister nation, Sweden, in the perpetuation of a dream of ideality conceived in the mind of one of her immortal sons, ALFRED NOBEL.

Lawrence, Ernest Orlando
US physicist. His invention of the cyclotron particle accelerator pioneered the production of artificial radioisotopes and the synthesis of new transuranic elements. Nobel prize 1939.
During World War II, Lawrence was involved with the separation of uranium-235 and plutonium for the development of the atomic bomb, and he organized the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories at which much of the work on this project was carried out. After the war, he continued as a believer in nuclear weapons and advocated the acceleration of their development.
Lawrence was born in South Dakota and studied there and at Minnesota, Chicago, and Yale universities. He was professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1930 and director from 1936 of the Radiation Laboratory, which he built into a major research centre for nuclear physics.
The first cyclotrons were made in 1930 and were only a few centimetres in diameter. Each larger and improved design produced particles of higher energy than its predecessor, and a 68-cm/27-in model was used to produce artificial radioactivity. Among the results obtained from the use of the accelerated particles in nuclear transformations was the disintegration of the lithium nucleus to produce helium nuclei.

Who Was Ernest O. Lawrence?
He was called the "Atom Smasher." The man who "held the key" to atomic energy. This "giant" of physics is Ernest Orlando Lawrence, known to the world as E. O. and inventor of the cyclotron, Nobel Prize winner, and namesake of Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley national laboratories. "He saw physics as a kind of adventure," said Herb York, the first Lawrence Livermore National Lab director. "He wanted to do 'big physics,' the kind of work that could only be done on a large scale with a lot of people involved." The invention that would rocket E. O. Lawrence to international fame started out modestly as a sketch on a scrap of paper. While sitting in the library one evening, Lawrence happened to glance over a journal article and was intrigued by one of the diagrams. The idea was to produce very high energy particles required for atomic disintegration by means of a succession of very small "pushes." Lawrence told his colleagues that he had found a method for obtaining particles of very high energy, without the use of any high voltage. The idea was surprisingly simple, but Lawrence double-checked his theory with physicists from Yale to make sure he had not overlooked a critical detail. "Without a doubt, Lawrence's finest achievement was inventing the cyclotron," said York. "The cyclotron impacted future scientific advances." In November 1939, Lawrence won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the cyclotron and its various applications.

Ernest Orlando Lawrence (1901-1958) American physicist, was born in August 8th 1901, in Canton, and died in Palo Alto, California, in August 27th 1958. Studied in St. Olaf College, in the University of Minnesota, in the University of Chicago and in the University of Yale. In 1928, entered the University of California as Associate Professor of Physics. In 1930, was appointed professor and in 1936 became director of the Radiation Laboratory of the University of California at Berkeley. This institution, now called Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, became an important research center of Nuclear and Particle Physics. Lawrence is known for his development of the cyclotron, an instrument that accelerates charged atoms at high-speed, to accomplish nuclear transmutations. With his coworker Milton Livingston, Lawrence built the first cyclotron in 1930, although he had already proposed the idea in an article two years before. The cyclotron is one of the main instruments for studying atomic nuclei and elementary particles. Ernest Lawrence received the American Medal of Merit, the Physics Nobel Prize in 1939 and Fermi Award in 1957.
