Ioan-Doré Landau Ioan-Doré Landau is Research Director at C.N.R.S.(National Centre for Scientific Research) and works at the Laboratoire d'Automatique de Grenoble (CNRS/INPG) of the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble. His research interests encompass theory and applications in system identification, adaptive control, robust digital control and nonlinear systems. He has authored and co-authored over 200 papers on these subjects. He is the author of the books: Adaptive Control - The Model Reference Appoach (Dekker 1979) translated also in chinese, System Identification and Control Design (Hermès 1993, Prentice Hall 1990). Commande de systèmes conception, identification, mise en oeuvre (Hermes-Lavoisier, 2002) and co-author (with M. Tomizuka) of the book Adaptive Control - Theory and Practice (in Japanese -Ohm 1981) as well as co-author (with R. Lozano and M. M’Saad) of the book Adaptive Control (Springer Verlag 1997). He edited and co-edited several books in french on the above topics including a series on «Mathematical Tools for Control, System Analysis and Signal Processing and Models» and one on «Adaptive Control». He holds also several patents and was at the origin of several software packages in control developped by ADAPTECH. He advised 31 PhD students. He delivered a number of Plenary Talks at International Conferences including American Control Conference in Seattle in 95. He was the key note speaker at the European Control Conference in Bruxelles in 1997.

His broad field of work included the theory of superconductivity and superfluidity quantum electrodynamics nuclear physics and particle physics . In he became head of the theory department of the Institute for Physical Problems in the former Soviet Union; he was also a member of the Academy of Sciences. Arrested under the rule of Stalin and Beria in , but released one year later. He was a Nobel Laureate in Physics for the year for his pioneering theories of condensed matter , especially liquid helium . He is also admired for a prolific series of textbooks on theoretical physics, co-authored with E.M. Lifshitz. Födelseland: Ryssland Födelseår: 1908 Död år: 1968 Lev "Dau" Davidovich Landau var en sovjetisk teoretisk fysiker som kom att bli känd främst för att ha tagit med den västerländska forskningskulturen inom den teoretiska fysiken till Sovjetunionen på 1930-talet och för att ha utvecklat kvantteorin för superflytande vätskor. Niels Bohr Han hade en egen forskargrupp vars blivande medlemmar, helt oförberett, var tvungna att skriva ett prov som han kallade för "teoretiskt minima" och som bestod av uppgifter inom alla områden inom matematiken som han ansåg vara intressant. Detta inkluderade bl a analys, komplex analys, differentialekvationer, gruppteori och differentialgeometri (topologi saknades dock vilket skulle komma att få förödande konsekvenser för den sovjetiska forskningen om svarta hål). Under de 29 år som han gav provet var det bara 43 personer som blev godkända men en stor del av dessa kom att göra stora vetenskapliga upptäckter. Lev Davidovich Landau Born: 22 Jan 1908 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Russian Empire Died: 1 April 1968 in Moscow, USSR Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index Previous (Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Lev Landau studied physics and chemistry at Baku University and then went in 1924 to the Leningrad State University, graduating in 1927. He continued research at the Leningrad Physico- Technical Institute. Niels Bohr 's Institute for Theoretical Physics. From that time he considered himself a pupil of Bohr's whose influence was to dictate the direction of Landau's work. In 1932 Landau become the head of the Theory Division of the Ukrainian Technical Institute in Kharkov. In addition, in 1935, he was made head Physics at the Kharkov Gorky State University. Landau soon made his School in Kharkov the centre of theoretical physics in the USSR. In 1937 Landau went to Moscow to become Head of the Theory Division of the Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences. Landau worked on low-temperature physics, atomic and nuclear physics and plasma physics. The work he did on the theory to explain why liquid helium was super-fluid earned him the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physics. In 1962, Landau was involved in a car accident after which he was unconscious for six weeks. Several times doctors declared him clinically dead. Remarkably Landau regained consciousness and although in most ways he returned to normal, he could never again perform creative work. He died six years later having never completely recovered.
