Carlos Saavedra Lamas November 1 May 5 ) was an Argentinian academic and politician who received the Nobel Peace Prize in Lamas, born in Buenos Aires into the Argentinian aristocracy, was an outstanding student who received his doctorate in laws from the University of Buenos Aires , and then began a career as a teacher of law and sociology at the University of La Plata , eventually rising to the position of professor at Buenos Aires. As an academic, some of his major published works concentrated on labor law . He was involved in the early stages of the International Labor Organization (ILO), and much of his work ended up being the basis of Argentina's own labor laws. His political career began in through a succession of steadily more important roles, including two terms in the Argentinian parliament beginning in 1908, where his interests were mainly in foreign affairs . In , he became Minister for Justice and Education The achievement for which he received the Nobel Prize was as Argentina's foreign minister, which he was from to , mediating a treaty to end the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia and instigating several multilateral nonaggression treaties between a number of South American countries.

Carlos Saavedra Lamas Carlos Saavedra Lamas was born on November 1, 1878 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the grandson of Cornelio Saavedra and Andrés Lamas. He studied Law and worked as professor in the universities of La Plata and Buenos Aires; was the Secretary General of the Municipality of Buenos Aires and, in 1908 he was designated as Congressional Deputy until 1915. Soon after he was the Minister of Justice, Minister of Public Education and Minister of Exterior Relations. He organized and presided at the international committee of mediation (Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and the United States) that assured the armistice of June 12, 1935 and he later had an vital role in the negotiations that originated an agreement of permanent peace. In 1936 he won Nobel Peace Prize, making him the first Latin American individual to receive this honor. Argentine jurist who in 1936 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for his part in ending the Chaco War (1932-35), fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over the northern part of the Gran Chaco region and especially its oil fields.
Educated in law, Saavedra Lamas taught at the National University of La Plata and at the University of Buenos Aires, of which he was rector from 1941 to 1943. In 1915 he became Argentinian minister of justice and of public education, and from 1932 to 1938 he served as minister of foreign affairs. Between October 1933 and June 1934 the United States, Italy, and 14 Latin-American nations signed an antiwar treaty prepared by Saavedra Lamas. He organized and presided over the international mediation committee (Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States) that secured an armistice (June 12, 1935) in the Chaco War. Subsequently he was prominent in negotiations resulting in a permanent peace agreement (July 21, 1938). Saavedra Lamas was president of the International Labour Congress, Geneva (1928); the Pan-American Conference, Buenos Aires (1936); and the League of Nations Assembly (1936). He also wrote several books on international law and peacekeeping, economics, and education.

Saavedra Lamas was a distinguished student at Lacordaire College and at the University of Buenos Aires where he received the Doctor of Laws degree in 1903, summa cum laude . After study in Paris and travel abroad, he accepted a professorship in law and constitutional history at the University of La Plata , where he began the teaching career that was to span more than forty years. Later, he inaugurated a course in sociology at the University of Buenos Aires, taught political economy and constitutional law in the Law School of the university, and eventually served as the president of the university.
Saavedra Lamas was a leading Argentinian academician in two areas. A pioneer in the field of labor legislation, he edited several treatises on labor legislation in Argentina and on the need for a universally recognized doctrine on the treatment of labor - among them, (1927) [Center of Social and Labor Legislation], (three volumes, 1933) [National Code of Labor Law]. In the arena of practical affairs, Saavedra Lamas drafted legislation affecting labor in Argentina, supported the founding of the International Labor Organization in 1919, and presided over the ILO Conference of 1928 in Geneva while serving simultaneously as leader of the Argentine delegation.
