Par Fabian Lagerkvist
Par Fabian Lagerkvist
Novelist, poet, dramatist, and one of the major Swedish literary figures of the first half of the 20th century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951.
Lagerkvist was reared in a traditional religious manner in a small town. The influence of his early years remained strong despite his introduction to modern scientific ideas and his eventual break with the religion of his forefathers. He became involved with socialism and soon began to support artistic and literary radicalism, as demonstrated in his manifesto entitled Ordkonst och bildkonst (1913; "Literary and Pictorial Art"). In Teater (1918; "Theatre"), the three one-act plays Den Svare Stunden ("The Difficult Hour") illustrate a similar modernist viewpoint. The extreme pessimism that pervaded Lagerkvist's works during World War I, such as Angest (1916; "Anguish"), slowly subsided, starting with Det eviga leendet (1920; The Eternal Smile) and his autobiographical novel Gast hos verkligheten (1925; Guest of Reality), until finally he declared his faith in man in the great prose monologue Det besegrade livet (1927; "The Triumph over Life"), which became a positive point of departure for much of his later work. When the new creeds of violence were being proclaimed in the early 1930s, he quickly recognized their danger. His prose work Bodeln (1933; The Hangman), later dramatized, is a protest against the everlasting brutality in the world. The play Mannen utan sjal (1936; The Man Without a Soul) is also an expression of Lagerkvist's indignation with Fascism. During the 1940s he wrote his most unusual play, sometimes called a "stage oratorio," Lat manniskan leva (1949; Let Man Live), which deals with man's readiness throughout history to judge his fellows and condemn them even to death.

the curmudgeon Written in the days when the Second World Thunderstorm was nearing its bitter end, as an allegorical tale set in mid-millenium Italy The Dwarf The Dwarf might be applicable to. The novel is powerfully universal; there is no single time or theme to narrowly fit it into, no rigid set of contexts to clip its wings with. Finally, the novel survives the most prohibitive of interpretations: the lack of any interpretation whatsoever; taken literally for what it is on the surface, the book shines as few other do. Incredibly enough, such as it is, the book is even suitable for children and young people in general. Please point me to the book which satisfies all of the above conditions! That is the power of The Dwarf , that is the source of its strength. A rare event that a book by a Nobel Prize nominee fully deserves recognition it has received.

Lagerkvist, Par Fabian Par Lagerkvist (1891-1974), the son of peasants, was born in the south of Sweden. He decided early that he was going to be a writer and, after a year at the University of Uppsala, he left for Paris (1913), where he came under the influence of expressionism, especially in painting. His impressions resulted in the programmatic Ordkonst och bildkonst (1913) [Verbal Art and Pictorial Art]. Until 1930 Lagerkvist lived chiefly in France and Italy, and even after his permanent return to Sweden he frequently travelled on the Continent and in the Mediterranean.
Lagerkvist has given an account of his early years in the autobiographical volumes Gast hos verkligheten (1925) [Guest of Reality] and Det besegrade livet (1927) [The Conquered Life]. His poetry moves from the anxiety and despair of the war years, as in Angest (1916) [Anguish], to the celebration of love as a «universal conciliatory power», as in Hjartats sanger (1926) [Songs from the Heart]. As a playwright, Lagerkvist has been extremely versatile. While Den svara stunden (1918) [The Difficult Hour I, II, III] shows the influence of the later Strindberg, plays like Himlens Hemlighet (1919) [The Secret of Heaven] echo Tagore and the mystery play; Han som fick leva om sitt liv (1928) [He Who Lived His Life Over Again], on the other hand, is realistic. His work during the thirties was determined by his violent opposition to totalitarianism: Bodeln (1933) [The Hangman], Mannen utan sjal (1936) [The Man without a Soul], and Seger i morker (1939) [Victory in the Darkness].

    Lagerkvist, Par Fabian
(Prix Nobel, 1951.)
