The New Internationalist (June 1996)
The theme of this special issue is `Burma - a Cry for Freedom'. AUNG SAN SUU KYI - Burma's elected leader - was born in 1945, the daughter of Burma's national hero Aung San. She was two years old when he was assassinated, just before Burma gained the independence to which he had dedicated his life. After her education in Rangoon, Delhi and Oxford, she worked for the United Nations in New York and Bhutan. She married an Englishman and spent several years raising a family in England. Then in 1988 she returned to Burma to care for her dying mother. Her return coincided with the outbreak of a spontaneous revolt against 26 years of political repression and economic decline. Suu Kyi quickly emerged as the most effective and articulate leader of the movement and the party she founded, the National League for Democracy, went on to win a
colossal electoral victory in 1990. But the military junta refused to transfer power as it had promised and until last year kept her under house-arrest in Rangoon. From her home she now organizes weekly political meetings - but she is as much at risk as any other citizen in SLORC's Burma and the regime still finds ways of restricting her movement and her contacts with the outside world. John Pilger recently interviewed her in her Rangoon home. JP: Three years ago an official of the regime said: 'You can forget about Suu Kyi. She's finished.' Here you are, hardly finished. How do you explain that? SK: I think it's because democracy is not finished in Burma. Until we finish this course for democracy, none of us who are involved in it will be finished.

Fear and longing prevail inside Burma, where a brutal military junta continues to rule with an iron hand, but cannot subdue the lady who lives, virtually a prisoner, inside the lakeside home of her father, the martyr of a nation that still waits for justice and democracy. The story of a heroine.
By Ron Gluckman/Yangon B EYOND THE BARRICADES AND The seemingly innocuous nature of the house is emphasized by the appearance of its sole occupant. She arrives after the guest log has been signed, and permission to enter has been granted by government guards at the gate. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is demure and soft spoken in conversation, but, depending on whether you believe the military rulers of Burma or the Nobel committee, she is either a puppet of imperialism or one of the most courageous women alive. For much of the past six years, Burma’s military junta have held "the lady," as she is known nationwide, in house arrest. For five years, she was allowed no visitors. Even after her release a year ago last July, her movements have been restricted, her followers arrested and, often, abused. Her weekly speeches are uniformly condemned by the state press. In June, SLORC banned criticism of its rule, effectively outlawing the NLD and Suu Kyi’s public addresses. Overnight, signs went in the capital of Rangoon, by her house and the United States embassy, denouncing foreign interference in Burmese politics. Suu Kyi, who is married to a British university professor, was attacked as a "western party girl" and "foreign stooge" in the official state media.

Aung San Suu Kyi: Free at Last
Sukanya Hantrakul
World Press Review correspondent Bangkok, Thailand Crowds of supporters press in on Aung San Suu Kyi upon her release from a 20-month house arrest, May 6, 2002 (Photo: AFP). The release of Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from a 20-month house arrest raises high hopes that dialogue between the opposition and the military regime, known as the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), is moving forward in a tangible way. The junta said it had turned a new page for the people of Myanmar, formerly Burma, and the international community. Suu Kyi, the opposition leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), can now travel unrestricted throughout the country. She used the first day of her freedom to visit her party’s headquarters and declared that she would continue to fight for democracy. Burmese in exiles in Bangkok and around the world, however, have mixed feelings about the news. While they welcome the release, they are also wary of the junta’s tactics. According to reports, the refusal of Western countries to invest in Myanmar and the resource crunch the country has been facing contributed to the junta’s decision to release Suu Kyi. Additionally, she has been arrested and released before, after traveling outside Yangon to do political work. The Burmese exiles want the estimated 1,500 prisoners jailed since 1988 to be set free and the outcome of the May 1990 election, in which the NLD won 59.9 percent of the votes, recognized.

Aung San Suu Kyi released
YANGON, Myanmar (CNN) Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been released after 19 months of house arrest, the Myanmar government has announced. "Aung San Suu Kyi has liberty to carry out all activities, including her political party, as of today. There are no conditions or restrictions, because we are confident that we can trust each other," said Col. Hla Min, speaking on behalf of the government. The government proclaimed Monday "a day of national unity" that "marks a new page for the people of Myanmar and the international community." The Nobel peace laureate, who has been confined to her lakeside villa since September 2000, was yet to come out and appear in public. The government's statement did not mention Suu Kyi by name, but Yangon's public relations firm in Washington said she was referred to in the statement reading: "We shall recommit ourselves to allowing all of our citizens to participate freely in the life of our political process, while giving priority to national unity, peace and stability of the country as well as the region." In Yangon, a spokesman for Myanmar's military junta said no details of any reconciliation deal or what her political role would be were available.

Aung San Suu Kyi calls her fight for democracy Myanmar's "second struggle for independence" By Joe Havely CNN Hong Kong (CNN) Her supporters call her simply 'The Lady'. In 1990 they turned out in vast numbers to vote for Aung San Suu Kyi and her party to become the new government of Myanmar, formerly Burma. The result, an 82 percent landslide in favor of the National League for Democracy (NLD), took the country's military rulers by surprise. Refusing to acknowledge defeat, the generals claimed foreigners and communists had rigged the election. In the subsequent weeks hundreds of NLD members were rounded up and jailed. According to human rights groups, more than a thousand remain in their cells, never having been convicted of a crime. Aung San Suu Kyi herself presented little challenge by then she had already been held under house arrest for several months.

Doubts as to Aung San Suu Kyi's release for Burma Convention
PRINT FRIENDLY EMAIL STORY

Reporter: Peter Lloyd
TONY EASTLEY: After all the promises last year, Burma's military government says it's preparing to hold a much vaunted convention on the future of the country in a fortnight's time.
But doubts about whether the forum will go ahead on schedule are mounting. There's confusion over when or whether detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be set free from a year in detention or if any members of her party will attend.
South East Asia Correspondent Peter Lloyd reports.

Aung San Suu Kyi : 'We've got to move forward'
Her compatriots call her the 'iron butterfly', a name that evokes both her non-violent combat for democracy and the strength of her character. Aung San Suu Kyi, 57, talks to the new Courier about the political evolution of her country since her release from house arrest in May last year.
You recently received the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Prize for Tolerance and Non-Violence. Over many years, you have been given countless international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. How helpful have these awards been for you?
What are you expecting from the international community and especially from the UN?

We would like to see the UN standing very firmly by the General Assembly resolution(1) on Burma and to try to implement the terms of the resolution as quickly as possible. And we would like the whole international community to support the UN and this.

Aung San Suu Kyi
In 1947, Burma achieved independence from Britain. Following the subsequent rise of a military dictatorship many courageous people have worked for political freedom in Burma, among them Aung San Suu Kyi. Aung San is a leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), whose election in 1990 would have made her the first democratic political leader in recent history. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was born in 1945 in Rangoon, Burma. Her father, General Aung San, had been a national hero who had helped Burma to gain its independence from Britain. Her mother was Daw Khin Kyi. Aung San was only two years old when her father was assassinated. She remained in Burma until her mother received an appointment as Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960. The appointment was in Delhi. Aung San studied at Delhi, and later Oxford University, where she received a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. In the years that followed Aung San worked as Assistant Secretary of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions and as a research officer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bhutan. There she married Dr. Michael Aris and returned to Oxford, England, where she worked and raised two children.

July 17th 2003 Aung San Suu Kyi still remains in custody in Myanmar today, despite a strong and unusually direct and unified appeal by ASEAN countries and other international bodies and countries for her release. The international media has dropped the story for the time-being, and so is business in Burma/Myanmar, as the Burmese ruling junta proves that little has changed and international pressure will do little to release their grip on dissendent opinion. The US is in the midst of implementing trade sanctions with Burma, and ASEAN is under pressure to prove it's influence. June 2003 While the disappearance of Aung San Suu Kyi as the Myanmar junta arrested her and supporters and placed them in "protective custody" may seem only of passing interest to our readers, this never-ending story has significant implications for governance in South East Asia, and the country-risk and economic risk of doing business in Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi is painted by the West as a hero of democracy. In Malaysia and some Asian nations she is characterised by the government press as a Western Uncle Tom. Nevertheless the UN Special Envoy Razali Ismail is Malaysian and was credited by many worldwide with the success at obtaining Aung San Suu Kyi's release last year, and spun as an example of the "Asian way" of negotiating by Malaysia's elite. This time, Ramzali is back into the fray, and as of the second week in June, concerns are heightening that Aung San Suu Kyi may well have been injured. No news since her disappearance, to many, is bad news.

Aung San Suu Kyi: "This government is not capable of running the economy"
TIME contributor Sandra Burton met with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Oct. 22 to discuss the recent visit of United Nations Special Envoy Alvar De Soto and his efforts to promote national reconciliation and the restoration of democracy. TIME: Do you think anything significant will come out of this latest visit by the U.N. Special Envoy? Suu Kyi: We think this is one of many initiatives going on, so we don't think it is particularly significant. As you are probably aware, this has been going on for some time. This was not the first time that Mr. De Soto has visited Burma. In fact, this is the fourth time. So it is nothing new and just one of many things going on about Burma. TIME: In any of the initiatives that are going on, do you see any hope of the kind of dialogue that both sides talk about but have failed to achieve for all these years?

Her current role as a democracy activist is fitting. Suu Kyi's father, Gen. Aung San, led Burma's struggle for independence from Britain in the mid-1940s. His daughter was 2 years old when enemies assassinated him in 1947, the year before Burma finally won its freedom. Tales of her father's heroism inspired Suu Kyi, charging her sense of idealism and responsibility to the Burmese people. Even as a young woman living thousands of miles away in England, she knew the day might come when her country would need her: In a 1971 letter to her husband-to-be, she worried that "national considerations might tear us apart."
"The struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma is a struggle for life and dignity. It is a struggle that encompasses our political, social and economic aspirations. The people of my country want the two freedoms that spell security: freedom from want and freedom from fear."
