Aung San Suu Kyi calls her fight for democracy Myanmar's "second struggle for independence" Story Tools (CNN) Her supporters call her simply 'The Lady'. In 1990 they turned out in vast numbers to vote for Aung San Suu Kyi and her party to become the new government of Myanmar, formerly Burma. The result, an 82 percent landslide in favor of the National League for Democracy (NLD), took the country's military rulers by surprise. Refusing to acknowledge defeat, the generals claimed foreigners and communists had rigged the election. In the subsequent weeks hundreds of NLD members were rounded up and jailed. According to human rights groups, more than a thousand remain in their cells, never having been convicted of a crime. Aung San Suu Kyi herself presented little challenge by then she had already been held under house arrest for several months. Her popularity and the threat that posed to the ruling regime meant that her detention would last another five years.

Aung San Suu Kyi Aung San Suu Kyi was born on January 19, 1945 in the city of Rangoon, Burma. General Aung San Kyi and Daw Khin Kyi brought her into the world. Her father, General Aung Sun, was the national leader of Burma until his assassination on July 17, 1947. His death would be one of the main contributors to her fight for peace and independence for the country of Burma. She was educated in the city of Rangoon until she was fifteen years old. Her mother would soon become Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal. In 1960 she would travel with her mother to these other countries. While living in these foreign lands she studied politics at Delhi University. She continued her education at St. Hugh's College and Oxford University where she received a BA in economics, politics, and philosophy. During the next several years she worked abroad and met her future husband Dr. Michael Aris. The couple soon married and had two children. The elections were going to be held in May of 1990 in which she was declared ineligible. Even though she was unable to run in the election the National League for Democracy had a landslide victory even without her present. She would spend the next six years of her life at her lakeside villa in Rangoon to serve her house arrest. She wrote many speeches and books that were published. During this time she received many awards dealing with her great aspiration toward peace. However, maybe her greatest honor was the Nobel Peace Prize that she won on October 14, 1991. With her prize money of 1.3 million dollars she established a health and education trust for the people of Burma.

Corrections Aung San Suu Kyi Even when she's under house arrest, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning resistance leader is a symbol of hope in the struggle for democracy in Burma. By David Rubien A question that has to haunt anyone pondering the predicament of Burma's democratic resistance leader Aung San Suu Kyi is: Why hasn't she been killed? She is, after all, a major thorn in the sides of the military dictators who have been driving the Southeast Asian nation to ruin for the past 38 years. Certainly she would not be the first popular opposition leader to be murdered by despots. The simple answer is they missed their chance. Suu Kyi (pronounced soo chee), 55, was first confined to house arrest in 1989, months before her National League of Democracy won Burma's last election in a landslide. The dictators ignored the election results and proceeded to arrest all the NLD leaders they hadn't already jailed previously, and continued the kind of repression that had been the junta's modus operandi since 1962. But in 1991 something happened that the dictators couldn't have anticipated. Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize. The eyes of the world suddenly became focused on this slight, Buddhist woman locked in her home, forbidden from picking up her award. But her captors came under international gaze as well, and killing Suu Kyi now would be too reckless a move even for a junta that makes murder and slavery cornerstones of its policy.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (1945)

Aung San Suu Kyi is back in the news again . She was arrested by the Myanmar officials May 30 after a clash between her followers and supporters of the repressive Myanmar government. She is detained in Insein jail near Yangon. Suu Kyi is the daughter of one of Burma's most cherished heroes, the martyred General Aung San, who led his country's fight for independence from Great Britain in the 1940s and was killed for his beliefs in 1947. Suu Kyi has equaled her father's heroics with her calm but passionate advocacy of freedom and democracy in the country now called Myanmar, a name chosen by one of the most insensitive and brutal military dictatorships in the world.
CP photo Japan and Britain now are threatening to withdraw financial aid to Myanmar because of Suu Kyi's treatment.
