Polykarp Kusch
was born the son of a clergyman in Blankenburg, Germany, on January 26, 1911. He moved to the United States with his family only one year after his birth and later received his citizenship. Kusch attended grade school and high school in the Midwest, where he discovered that his goal was to pursue a career in the field of chemistry. He began his collegiate education at the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio, but soon realized that chemistry was not his specialty. His interest shifted to physics, an area in which he excelled. In 1931 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics, and then moved on to the University of Illinois for his graduate study work. In 1933 Kusch completed his Masters of Science degree, and was awarded his Ph. D. in 1936. Kusch made valuable connections during his studies.

Polykarp Kusch was born in Blankenburg, Germany, on the 26th January, 1911, the son of a clergyman. He has lived in the United States since 1912 and is a citizen of that country. He received his early education in the midwest of the United States. His original professional goal was in the field of chemistry, but soon after beginning his course of studies at the Case Institute of Technology , Cleveland, Ohio, his interest rapidly shifted to physics. In 1931 he received the B.S. degree in physics. He carried on his graduate study at the University of Illinois which awarded him the M.S. degree in 1933 and the Ph.D. degree in 1936. At Illinois he worked on problems in the field of optical molecular spectroscopy under the guidance of Professor F. Wheeler Loomis. He worked with Professor John T. Tate at the University of Minnesota in the field of mass spectroscopy during 1936-1937.
Since 1937 Kusch has been associated with the Department of Physics of Columbia University , New York City, except for interruptions engendered by World War II. These years were spent in research and development on microwave generators at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, the Bell Telephone Laboratories and Columbia University. The experience was important not only in that it gave him knowledge of microwave methods, but also in that it suggested application of the special techniques of vacuum tube technology to a large range of problems in experimental physics.

Kusch was brought to the United States in 1912 and became a citizen in 1922. In 1937, at Columbia University, he worked with the physicist Isidor I. Rabi on studies of the effects of magnetic fields on beams of atoms. He spent the wartime years in research on radar and returned to Columbia in 1946 as professor of physics, a position he held until 1972. Among other posts held by Kusch at Columbia were department chairman (1949-52, 1960-63), director of the radiation laboratory (1952-60), and academic vice president and provost (1969-72). In 1972 he took a position as professor at the University of Texas, Dallas, where he remained until his retirement in 1982. In 1947, through precise atomic beam studies, Kusch demonstrated that the magnetic properties of the electron were not in agreement with existing theories. Subsequently, he made accurate measurements

To Increase Viability Of The Organization The new president-elect of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), Lawrence M. Killingsworth, says he plans to institute a program aimed at ensuring the 10,000-member organization's ongoing strength and viability. Killingsworth, 47, who directs the Clinical Chemistry and Immunology Laboratories at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., says that a nationwide mentoring program should be implemented "to develop the leaders of tomorrow ... in the discipline of clinical chemistry." When he assumes the AACC presidency in January 1994, Killingsworth says, he will design a mentoring program to help AACC members not heavily involved in the association to become more familiar with its activities. "What this program will do," he says, "is take the core of really active local section members and officials, and reach out to some others who are members to get them more involved."
