Walter-Kohn-Preis für die SchülerInnen der ZPC Schule Der Nobelpreisträger für Chemie, Prof. Walter Kohn , besuchte unsere Schule am 25. Jänner 1999. Er kam damit in "seine" alte Schule, der er nach seiner Vertreibung vom Akademischen Gymnasium zugewiesen worden war. In einer angeregten Diskussion erörterte er mit unseren SchülerInnen der Oberstufe seinen Werdegang als Forscher, der schließlich mit der Verleihung des Nobelpreises für Chemie gekrönt wurde. Er erinnerte sich an zwei Lehrerpersönlichkeiten, die ihn in der ZPC Schule besonders gefördert und sein Interesse für die Physik geweckt hatten, Emil Nohel und Viktor Sabbath Prof. Kohn war vom Interesse unserer SchülerInnen und auch von ihren Kenntnissen in Physik sehr positiv beeindruckt. In der Folge teilt er der Schule mit, dass er beabsichtige, den SchülerInnen zwei Preise zu stiften, die jedes Schuljahr für besondere Leistungen vergeben werden sollen. Walter Kohn Colloquium Walter Kohn, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, will give a colloquium at the University of South Carolina on Friday October 20 at 4 P.M. in Room 210 of the Physical Sciences Center. Dr. Kohn will speak on the subject "The Electronic Structure of Matter: Wavefunctions and Density Functions". Refreshments will be served 15 minutes before the talk. The citation of the Nobel Prize committee for the 1998 prize, which Dr. Kohn shared with John Pople, reads "to Walter Kohn for his development of the density-functional theory and to John Pople for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry." The committee goes on to state that "The Laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are invloved." Dr. Kohn is currently on the faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California at Santa Barbara. This article, the second in a four-part series, looks at Kohn's life and his contributions, both to the field of chemistry and to the school where he has been a professor for the last 22 years. From his escape of Nazi-controlled Austria, to the transformation of two university physics departments, to a Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1998, UCSB physics Professor Walter Kohn has made his mark on the world. His impact rubbed off on his colleagues as well - when physics Professor Alan Heeger announced his own Nobel Prize last October, he wore a bolero tie like the one Kohn always wears. Kohn's Nobel Prize, which was the first won by a professor at UCSB, reflected his skill as a researcher, but also on the school and the institutions whose reputations he helped build. "It was in some sense an affirmation of something which we knew, that he was an outstanding scientist, that the department was a first-class department," Heeger said. "It was a great place to be."
