Martin Luther King's death did not slow the Civil Rights Movement. Black and white people continued to fight for freedom and equality. Coretta Scott King is the widow of the civil rights leader. In 1970, she established the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center in Atlanta, Ga. This "living memorial" consists of his boyhood home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King is buried. On Monday, January 20, 1986, in cities and towns across the country people celebrated the first official Martin Luther King Day, the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American. A ceremony which took place at an old railroad depot in Atlanta, Ga., was especially emotional. Hundreds had gathered to sing and to march. Many were the same people who, in 1965, had marched for 50 miles between two cities in the state of Alabama to protest segregation and discrimination of black Americans. All through the 1980's, controversy surrounded the idea of a Martin Luther King Day. Congressmen and citizens had petitioned the President to make Jan. 15, Martin Luther King's birthday, a federal legal holiday. Others wanted to make the holiday on the day he died, while some people did not want to have any holiday at all.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
M artin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. His father was the minister of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, as was his father before him "M.L.," as he was called, lived with his parents, his sister and brother in Atlanta Ga. Their home was not far from the church his father preached at M.L. 's mother and father taught their children what would become an important part of M.L.'s life - to treat all people with respect. Martin's father worked hard to break down the barriers between the races. His father believed African-Americans should register their complaints by voting A s M.L. grew up he found that not everyone followed his parents principles. He noticed that "black" people and white people where treated differently. He saw that he and his white friends could not drink from the same water fountains and could not use the same restrooms M.L.

Plagiarism and the Culture War: The Writings of Martin Luther King Jr. and Other Prominent Americans
Theodore Pappas
(Hallberg, 1998) Reviewed By Gavan Tredoux The news has been out since the late 1980s that Martin Luther King Jr., the American Civil Rights icon, was a serial plagiarist. Not only did he plagiarize at least half of his doctoral thesis; many of his speeches, including the most famous, were plagiarized too. Nor was this a recent development in his career - he had been plagiarizing material since he was a teenager. This is a fascinating story. There is the delicious irony that Luther King Jr. has been universally feted and embalmed with saintly oils. More interesting still, the story has been suppressed. Most Americans have not heard about the plagiarism and perhaps never will. The editors of his papers did their utmost to prevent the story from spreading. Boston University delayed, denied and obfuscated as long as possible and then some. The press, including the major newsmagazines, quashed coverage until the story had emerged elsewhere, and then buried it in the inside pages, entombing it in layers of qualification, special pleading and distraction. Now that the plagiarism has become incontestable, many academics continue to cover for the plagiarist, insisting that he was merely being an African American! Pappas struggled for years to find a publisher and effective distribution for his own groundbreaking account of all this. Despite that, the first printing sold out. Now he has completely revised and expanded the first edition, but don't expect a bookstore in your area to carry it. Instead, point your web browser at

Nation pauses to remember civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
WEB EXCLUSIVE Bill Delaney: Activist says African-Americans need to extend olive branch to Bush In this story: 'Time for us to get up and get involved' A day of speeches, services, parades RELATED STORIES, SITES (CNN) Many people across the United States are spending their day Monday observing the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, set aside to commemorate what this year would have been the slain civil rights leader's 72nd birthday. At King's home church, Ebenezer Baptist in Atlanta, Georgia, widow Coretta Scott King called on those gathered to share her husband's "global vision" to overcome racism and violence while at the same time seeking "ecumenical solidarity." To properly commemorate King, she called for individuals to commit themselves to improving the society in which they live. Specifically, Mrs. King called for opposition to the "attack on affirmative action." She urged individuals to demand an end to racial profiling and mandatory minimum prison sentences, and to work toward a nonviolent society by achieving for themselves a nonviolent lifestyle.

~Always the third Monday in January~
My parents raised me to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be and do anything I wanted. They also taught me that the color of a persons skin didn't matter. This may sound very naive to you. But that is always the way I have felt. We are all created equal in the eyes of the Lord. We are all His children. Remember the song from when you were younger all the children of the world....... Red, and yellow, black and white Jesus loves the little children of the world." Some people are born "color blind". Oh, that we could raise our children to be "color blind in their heart". Let us strive to be the kind of people who look at the inside and only see the best in others. As a Christian I am glad that the Lord loves me unconditionally. He sees my heart and knows the secret thoughts along with my past BUT He loves us in spite of it all. "Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God and anyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God for God is Love. So beloved, let us love one another."
Do YOU know your neighbors? God's Word says to "Love your neighbor as yourself". WOW. If we don't even know our neighbors what does that say about ourselves. A real example of a GOOD Neighbor is the story of the GOOD Samaritan that Jesus told us. Luke 10:29-37

Why? It s because national news media have never come to terms with what martin luther king jr. stood for during his final years.

The Martin Luther King You Don't See On TV
By Jeff Cohen and Norman Solomon It's become a TV ritual: Every year in mid-January, around the time of Martin Luther King's birthday, we get perfunctory network news reports about "the slain civil rights leader." The remarkable thing about this annual review of King's life is that several years his last years are totally missing, as if flushed down a memory hole. What TV viewers see is a closed loop of familiar file footage: King battling desegregation in Birmingham (1963); reciting his dream of racial harmony at the rally in Washington (1963); marching for voting rights in Selma, Alabama (1965); and finally, lying dead on the motel balcony in Memphis (1968). An alert viewer might notice that the chronology jumps from 1965 to 1968. Yet King didn't take a sabbatical near the end of his life. In fact, he was speaking and organizing as diligently as ever. Almost all of those speeches were filmed or taped. But they're not shown today on TV. Why?

(b. Jan. 15, 1929, Atlanta, Ga., U.S.d. April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tenn.), eloquent black Baptist minister, who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement's success in ending the legal segregation of blacks in the South and other portions of the United States. King rose to national prominence through the organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference , promoting nonviolent tactics such as the massive March on Washington (1963) to achieve civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964. The U.S. Congress voted to observe a national holiday in his honour, beginning in 1986, on the third Monday in January.
Early years.
King came from a family steeped in the tradition of the Southern black ministry: both his father and maternal grandfather were Baptist preachers. At the age of 15 he entered Morehouse College, Atlanta, under a special program for gifted students, receiving his B.A. in 1948. As an undergraduate his earlier interests in medicine and law were eclipsed by a decision in his senior year to enter the ministry, as his father had urged. Spending the next three years at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa. (bachelor of divinity, 1951), King first became acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence as well as with the thought of contemporary Protestant theologians. He was elected president of the student body and was graduated with the highest academic average in his class. From Crozer he went to Boston University (Ph.D., 1955), where, in seeking a firm foundation for his own theological and ethical inclinations, he began to focus his attention on conceptions of the relationship of man to God. In his doctoral dissertation, "A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman," his conclusions were fairly Niebuhrian. King himself conceived of God as an active, personal entity; man's salvation was to be found neither in the quest for social progress nor in the unaided power of reason; faith in God's guidance was the essential thing.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Religious leader; civil rights/human rights activist; author/poet; labor activist; organization executive/founder; minister; antiwar activist Married by then, King returned South, accepting the pastorate of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. It was here that he made his first mark on the civil rights movement, by mobilizing the black community during a 382-day boycott of the city's bus lines. Working through the Montgomery Improvement Association, King overcame arrest and other violent harassment, including the bombing of his home. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the Alabama laws requiring bus segregation unconstitutional, with the result that blacks were allowed to ride Montgomery buses on equal footing with whites. A national hero and a civil rights figure of growing importance, King summoned together a number of black leaders in 1957 and laid the groundwork for the organization now known as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Elected its president, he soon sought to assist other communities in the organization of protest campaigns against discrimination, and in voter-registration activities as well.

A Day On, Not A Day Off"
"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate.... Returning violence for violence multiples violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. "
