Martin Luther King
He led a mass struggle for racial equality that doomed segregation and changed America forever
By JACK E. WHITE
Intro: Our Century ... and the Next One
21st Century: The Shape of the Future
Monday, April 13, 1998
It is a testament to the greatness of Martin Luther King Jr. that nearly every major city in the U.S. has a street or school named after him. It is a measure of how sorely his achievements are misunderstood that most of them are located in black neighborhoods. Three decades after King was gunned down on a motel balcony in Memphis, Tenn., he is still regarded mainly as the black leader of a movement for black equality. That assessment, while accurate, is far too restrictive. For all King did to free blacks from the yoke of segregation, whites may owe him the greatest debt, for liberating them from the burden of America's centuries-old hypocrisy about race. It is only because of King and the movement that he led that the U.S. can claim to be the leader of the "free world" without inviting smirks of disdain and disbelief. Had he and the blacks and whites who marched beside him failed, vast regions of the U.S. would have remained morally indistinguishable from South Africa under apartheid, with terrible consequences for America's standing among nations. How could America have convincingly inveighed against the Iron Curtain while an equally oppressive Cotton Curtain remained draped across the South?

"Jacques Maritain"
20 February-4 May 1951
Chester, Pa. King delivered this presentation for Smith's course Christian Social Philosophy, which surveyed the ethical and social thought of Christianity from the era of the New Testament to the 1950s. King explains that Jacques Maritain, a Catholic theologian, was critical of modern philosophy's move away from theology toward agnosticism and atheism. "Maritain feels that atheism was one of the causes for the rise of communism rather than a mere consequence," King writes. He insists that although Maritain did not equate Christianity with democracy, "the only valid assumption that one can draw from Maritain's conclusions on democracy is that he sees it as the nearest political approximation of Christian principles." Smith made no comments on the paper and gave King an A for the course.

Clinton leads remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.
WEB EXCLUSIVE Bill Delaney: Activist says African-Americans need to extend olive branch to Bush In this story: Bush: Better education will fulfill King's dream 'Systemic violence of poverty and neglect' Other events across the nation RELATED STORIES, SITES ... ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) With marches, with speeches and with President Clinton participating as thousands of others did in community service projects, the nation observed the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been the slain civil rights leader's 72nd birthday. Clinton helped AmeriCorps workers paint a senior center in Washington on Monday. He followed the painting project with a speech at the University of the District of Columbia, where he called for unity. "If I could leave America with one wish as I depart office, it would be that we become more the 'one America' that we know we ought to be," Clinton said.

US oil prices break new records
. Oil prices in New York rise to $42 a barrel, following an attack by militants in Saudi Arabia. [ BBC News With world oil demand about to outstrip supply, and the danger posed by putting the world's future in the hands of one of its least stable regions, it is time to take seriously the need to transition ourselves away from oil as our primary energy source. Well, that and the fact that we're about to turn New York City into an iceberg. ;) One thing is clear to me: the Bush administration, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the oil interests, will never address the issues of global warming and our unhealthy dependence upon oil. Will John Kerry do anything more? It's hard to say - his campaign promises are rather vague. But considering what we're hearing from the other side (nothing), it's hard to believe he could do any worse. Discuss Trackback 1:17:06 AM

I'm trying to get back into the swing of things here after several incredibly busy weeks offline. Here are a few items of note to get me started:
  • Eric Muller has posted several excellent items lately about whether the Bush administration lied to the Supreme Court in the Padilla and Hamdi cases. He also touches on flaws in the White House's legal justification for departing from the Geneva Convention.

After his assassination in 1968, King became a symbol of protest in the struggle for racial justice. Education and Early Life King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, the eldest son of Martin Luther King Sr., a Baptist minister, and Alberta Williams King. His father served as pastor of a large Atlanta church, Ebenezer Baptist, which was founded by Martin Luther King Jr.'s maternal grandfather. King Jr. was ordained as a Baptist minister at age 18. King attended local segregated public schools, where he excelled. He entered nearby Morehouse College at age 15 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1948. After graduating with honors from Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania in 1951, he went to Boston University, where he earned a doctoral degree in systematic theology in 1955.

Malcolm X
NOTES:
  • Sept. 2001 - February 2002: I'm currently in the US, doing research in Computer Graphics at Mississippi State University.
  • March 16 - March 25, 1999: I visited New York City and took a lot of photos of sites related to Malcolm X. Among them are the Masjid El Hajj Malik El Shabazz (Malcolm X Avenue and 116th Street), corner of Malcolm X Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Audubon Ballroom, and Malcolm's and Betty's grave at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY
  • Lots of material displayed on this site has been copied by others for use on their sites without my approval! I strongly disapprove of this! I have invested lots of time and work. If you want to use material displayed on this site, please contact me first!
  • Thanks to all who have left feedback. Special thanks to those who have provided additional material or who have continued to motivate me.
Since hearing the name "Malcolm X" for the first time around 1988 in a rap song, I have been interested in him, his life and the changes he went through. Like Betty Shabazz, his wife, once said in J.H. Clark "Malcolm X - The man and his time", people who start to get interested in Malcolm soon get very possessive of him...
I can't help myself, but I can't go to a library without searching for information on Malcolm. Like many people, his autobiography fascinated me and made me gather more and more information.

The sport is Ultimate Frisbee , a game of agility, skill, speed, and luck. It is a sport which combines the best elements of soccer, basketball and American football into one very intense experience. Although it's been around for more than 25 years, there are still many people unfamiliar with Ultimate. If you are one of those people, I strongly encourage you to get involved in the sport. Not only is it incredibly fun, but it's also easy to learn and a good way to burn off unsightly cellulite. The Team
For two years now, we, the Mothers of Extension , have terrorized the world Ultimate scene with our Hard Core playing style . Living up to our motto, "gonna make ya sweat," has always been one of our top priorities. Officially, we are the Ultimate Frisbee team of MLK High School , but we believe that we would be quite capable of representing the entire United States in any international Ultimate competitions that should arise. We are very comitted to our sport, and we practice every day no matter what the weather or field conditions. Not only are we an invincible Ultimate team, but we're also politically correct , with representation from many strange ethnic and cultural groups within our ranks. We believe that Ultimate is the ultimate sport, and that it will eventually bring together the nations of the world in a spirit of universal peace and sportmanship. Long live Ultimate! Long live the Muthaz!

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Civil-Rights Leader The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands
in moments of comfort and convenience, but where
he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
was born on January 15, 1929 at his family home in Atlanta, Georgia. King was an eloquent Baptist minister and leader of the civil-rights movement in America from the Mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. King promoted non-violent means to achieve civil-rights reform and was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. King's grandfather was a Baptist preacher. His father was pastor of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church. King earned his own Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozier Theological Seminary in 1951 and earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Boston University in 1955. While at seminary King became acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi 's philosophy of nonviolent social protest. On a trip to India in 1959 King met with followers of Gandhi. During these discussions he became more convinced than ever that nonviolent resistance was the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom. As a pastor of a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama, King lead a Black bus boycott. He and ninety others were arrested and indicted under the provisions of a law making it illegal to conspire to obstruct the operation of a business. King and several others were found guilty, but appealed their case. As the bus boycott dragged on, King was gaining a national reputation. The ultimate sucess of the Montgomery bus boycott made King a national hero.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
