During the Assembly election campaign that soon followed the presidential vote, opposition leader Kim experienced what was to be the first of at least five attempts on his life by his political foes. Remarks by President Bush and President Kim Dae-Jung of South Korea
The Oval Office 12:03 P.M. EST PRESIDENT BUSH: Everybody in? It's been my honor to welcome President Kim here to the Oval Office. We had a very good discussion. We confirmed the close relationship between our two countries. We talked about a lot of subjects. And we'll be glad to answer questions on some of those subjects, but first let me say how much I appreciate this man's leadership in terms of reaching out to the North Koreans. He is leading, he is a leader. He is and we've had a very frank discussion about his vision for peace on the Peninsula. It's a goal we share. After all, we've got vested interests there. And we had a very good discussion. I made it clear to the President we look forward to working toward peace on the Peninsula, that we'll consult closely, that we'll stay in touch; that I do have some skepticism about the leader of North Korea, but that's not going to preclude us from trying to achieve the common objectives.

Former President of Korea and Nobel Peace Prize Winner
Former President Kim Dae-jung was born on December 3, 1925 in a small village on an island of South Korea's southwestern coast. He graduated from a commercial high school in 1943. When the Syngman Rhee Administration (1948-1960) began to become increasingly dictatorial, he decided to enter politics. His political career proved to be rather turbulent from the start. He was elected to the National Assembly in a bi-election in 1961 after two unsuccessful bids, but, within three days of his election, the National Assembly was dissolved following a military coup d'etat led by Major General Park Chung Hee. When he was elected again to the National Assembly in 1963, he began to emerge as a junior leader within his own party. He served as the spokesman for the Democratic Party in 1965 and became the chairman of the party's Policy Planning Committee the following year. As President Park Chung Hee sought constitutional revisions in 1969 to allow himself to run for a third term, Kim Dae-jung gave an address against the scheme in an outdoor rally, and he was widely acclaimed for his vision and courage. He was chosen the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Party in 1971, running against the all-powerful incumbent, Park Chung Hee. On October 18, ROK President Kim Dae-jung hosted a banquet to welcome the delegation led by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji at the Guesthouse of the Presidential Palace.
Premier Zhu made a speech at the banquet. He said that since last June, relations between the North and South have opened a new chapter of reconciliation and cooperation; they have begun the historic process of independent and peaceful reunification, which is of positive and far reaching significance for promoting peace and development in the region. He highly praised the political resolution taken by Kim Dae-jung and DPRK leader Kim Jung Il and expressed great respect for their profound vision.
He said that China always believes that the North and South are the main parties involved on the Peninsula question. Reconciliation and cooperation between the North and South conform to the aspiration of the people and independent and peaceful reconciliation is the general trend of times. All the other relevant parties should create a good external environment for it. He also took the opportunity to reiterate that China is a staunch supporter of the independent and peaceful reunification process on the Peninsula. A peaceful, unified and prosperous Korean Peninsula is conducive to the interests of China as well as those of the other countries in the region and the world.
He also said that in 1998, President Jiang Zemin and Kim Dae-jung declared the establishment of a partnership of cooperation oriented toward the 21st century, which opened a beautiful future for China-ROK friendship. Zhu noted that he had a fruitful meeting with President Kim on how to further develop bilateral good-neighborly relations and friendship and an in-depth exchange of views with ROK political and economic leaders. He strongly feels that it is the consensus of political and economic circles in the ROK and the common wish of the two peoples to pay attention to and develop China-ROK relations. The Chinese people have friendly feelings toward the ROK people. He expressed the hope and belief that through the visit, the two sides would join hands in bringing China-ROK friendly partnership of cooperation to a new stage of comprehensive development.

South Korean President Kim Dae-jung's second son, Kim Hong-up, on Friday was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by Seoul District Court on charges of bribery.
Besides, the court also ordered the 52-year old man to pay 500 million won (380,000 US dollars) in fines and an additional penalty of 560 million won (466,666 dollars), said national news agency Yonhap News.
Kim Sung-hwan, a friend of the President's son who had also been charged in the case, was sentenced to a five-year jail term and ordered to return the 1.86 billion won (1.55 million dollars) in bribes he accepted from companies, reported Yonhap.
"Capitalizing on his status and influence as a son of the president, (Kim Hong-up) accepted a considerable sum of money and evaded taxes, and most of his illicit requests with the prosecution and the National Tax Service were granted. This shows our society is still vulnerable to 'structural corruption,'" JudgeKim Sang-kyun was quoted by Yonhap as saying. "A heavy sentence must be handed down to prevent a recurrence of such an incident," added the judge.
Kim Hong-up was arrested in July 2001 for receiving about 2.5 billion won (2.08 million dollars) from companies and dodging taxes on some 2.2 billion won (1.83 million dollars) he took from Hyundai and other conglomerates as political donations.

It charged that Mr. Kim had received 2.3 billion won ($1.9 million) from companies seeking official assistance.
At 7:20 p.m., when the warrant was issued, Mr. Kim said briefly in response to a question that he felt sorry. Then he got into a car and rode to Seoul Penitentiary in Uiwang, Gyeonggi province.
The detention was scheduled for 8 p.m., but prosecutors executed it earlier in consideration of Kim Dae-jung's scheduled apology at 8 p.m.
"It is all my fault," Kim Dae-jung said in a televised apology as another of his sons was incarcerated. "My sons will be punished by the law." His youngest son, Kim Hong-gul, was detained last month on similar charges.
