MURRAY HILL, N. J. - Two scientists from Lucent Technologies' (NYSE: LU) Bell Labs have been awarded top honors by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for their significant contributions to the advancement of technology. Herwig Kogelnik, adjunct photonics systems research vice president at Bell Labs, will receive the 2001 IEEE Medal of Honor, the IEEE's highest award, at a ceremony on June 23, 2001 in Jersey City, N.J. Arun Netravali, president of Bell Labs and Lucent's chief technology officer and chief network architect, will receive the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal at the same ceremony.

Úvodní èást pøekladu pøednášky proslovené 10. prosince 2000 u pøíležitosti pøevzetí Nobelovy ceny za fyziku za rok 2000. S laskavým souhlasem Nobelovy nadace byl pøevzat z publikace Les Prix Nobel, str. 126. Dìkuji za milé uvedení a buïte vítáni. Je to pro mne èest být jedním z nositelù Nobelovy ceny za fyziku a moci dnes s vámi hovoøit. Svoji pøednášku jsem nazval „Zmìnit možnost ve skuteènost: objev integrovaného obvodu“. V roce 1953, kdy jsem objevil integrovaný obvod, skýtala oblast elektroniky velké možnosti. Avšak to, co lidé s pomocí integrovaného obvodu vytvoøili, nakonec došlo mnohem dále, než si kdokoliv z nás vèetnì mì dokázal v té dobì pøedstavit. Charles Townes, který získal Nobelovu cenu za práci v oboru laserové technologie, shrnul své pocity, když øekl: „Je to jako když bobr odvìtil zajíci, pozoruje Hooverovu pøehradu: ¸Ne, nepostavil jsem ji sám. Je ale založena na mých myšlenkách!“ Na nejzákladnìjší úrovni zpracovává integrovaný obvod elektøinu. Ve skuteènosti se celá oblast elektroniky zabývá ovlivòováním toku elektronù, jinými slovy, snaží se pøinutit elektøinu, aby konala složitìjší èinnost. Na spoutání elektøiny pracovala dlouhá øada lidí, od Williama Gilberta, který poprvé použil termín „elektøina“ pøed 400 lety, až po Thomase Edisona, který postavil v 80. letech 19. století jeden z prvních výkonných elektrických generátorù.

Physics winners decorated for pioneering work in modern-day information technology
Jack S. Kilby, Zhores Ivanovich Alferov and Herbert Kroemer each hold U.S. patents for the work for which they were honored with the 2000 Nobel Prize for Physics. Jack S. Kilby, received patents for his work minituarizing integrated circuits (patents #3,138,743 and #4,042,948). Zhores Ivanovich Alferov is a co-inventor on patent #3,958,265 for the semiconductor light-emitting diode, and Herbert Kroemer is a co-inventor on two patentspatent #3,309,553 covering semiconductor solid state radiation emitters and patent #5,013,683, for a method of growing tilted super lattices. The work covered in these patents helped to lay the groundwork for the increasingly faster speed and smaller size of today's information technology, and is the basis for their Nobel Prize. In 1982, Kilby was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his work relating to patent #3,138,743. Kilby's, Alferov's and Kroemer's patents, as well as all patents issued since the first one in 1790, can be viewed on USPTO's web site
