INDIAN NOBEL LAUREATES
N obel Prizes for 2003 were announced in October. Most were awarded to Americans and Europeans.
T he prize for Literature went to J. M. Coetzee of South Africa and the Peace prize to an Iranian lawyer who became the first Muslim lady ever to win a Nobel. Unfortunately, no Indian made the list in 2003, although there was some speculation that the Nobel for economics may go to Jagdish Bhagwati of Columbia University.

The following is the list of all Nobel laureates of Indian origin :

RABINDRANATH TAGORE C V RAMAN
The Raman effect states that light from fast receding galaxies will have a shift toward the red end of the spectrum (red-shift). Using Raman effect relationship between speed and red-shift, age of the universe has been estimated between 12 billion and 24 billion years. Raman moved to Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1933 and died there on Nov 21, 1970.

Research Summary
Structure and Function in Rhodopsin: Like all receptors coupled to G-proteins, rhodopsin contains three distinct domains, the cytoplasmic (intracellular) domain that is involved in all the protein-protein interactions, the transmembrane (TM) domain where the signal transduction begins, by light-catalysed isomerization of 11-cis-retinal to all-trans retinal, and the intradiscal structural domain. Our efforts are aimed at understanding structures, specific functions and conformational changes in the three domains. 1. Expression of Rhodopsin Mutant Genes in Mammalian Systems: 2. The Intradiscal Domain:

Letter: Khorana's Achievement
By Janardan P. Pandey In describing the "Origins of DNA Synthesis" ( The Scientist , March 19, 1990, page 30), Carole F. Gan writes: "In 1968, Har Goribind [sic] Khorana and his colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, were the first to succeed in chemically synthesizing a polynucleotide, the transfer RNA (tRNA) for alanine. Although this was indeed a historic achievement - one that won Khorana the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine - there were no known biological applications for the technique at the time." I would like to correct two items in this description. First, Har Gobind Khorana synthesized the DNA coding for the alanine tRNA. Second, although, as Gan states, this was a historic achievement, this is not the accomplishment for which Khorana was awarded the Nobel Prize. He received the Nobel Prize for his work on the genetic code before he synthesized the gene for alanine tRNA.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Haptic is a term referring to the technology of touch This article concerns physical and human touch. For other meanings, see Touch (disambiguation). Touching is having or getting a zero distance; in geometry it refers especially to a tangent line or curve (cf. collision). This term can be used to describe interaction between any physical objects. A more complex concept comes into play when the term is used in reference to human beings.

Data representing touch sensations may be saved or played back using haptic technologies. Some low-end haptic devices are already common. Some Joysticks A joystick is a computer peripheral or general control device consisting of a hand held stick that pivots about one end and transmits its angle in two or three dimensions to a computer. Most joysticks are two-dimensional, having two axes of movement, just like a mouse, but three-dimensional joysticks do exist. Joysticks are often used to control games, and usually have one or more push-buttons whose state can also be read by the computer. Most I/O interface cards for PCs have a joystick (game control) port. Modern joysticks (as of 2003) mostly use a USB interface for connection to the PC.
