This area is dedicated to the memory of my Dad, John W. Kendall, Jr., and to the memory of all the fighting men of the "Thunderbird" division, those who died for their country, and those who survived.
    It was June, 1943.
The St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees were leading the Major Leagues. "This Is The Arm," Irving Berlin's all-soldier show, was the big hit on Broadway. Girls were swooning as Frank Sinatra sang, "She's Funny That Way," and juke boxes from coast to coast were grabbing nickels with a new ballad called "That Old Black Magic." Humphrey Bogart, the tough, world-weary hero of "Casablanca," was the matinee idol of the year. The up-sweep hair-do was the vogue of the season. Franklin Roosevelt had just finished his fifth war conference with Prime Minister Churchill in Washington.
War news was good on June third, 1943. Organized axis resistance had ceased in North Africa with the capture of General Von Arnheim and surrender of the German 15th Armored Division. But all this was half a world away, and to the average U. S. citizen the war was still something unreal. In the bars and barber shops, in the grocery stores, on the street corners across America, the people were saying:

    Missing Believed Lost
In 1992 the BFI initiated a search for some of the best lost British films. As part of this effort they published a book Missing Believed Lost which listed and described 92 of the most sought after films. Since then, things have gone a bit quiet. A handful of the films have been unearthed but the BFI doesn't make a big fuss when this happens. Contrast this with the hoopla when the BBC find a missing episode of Dr Who - news items, press articles and a video release within six months. The list of films is not available on the BFI site or, indeed, anywhere on the Internet. Until now that is. Henry Kendall 1926-99
MIT professor Henry W Kendall, a 1990 Nobel Laureate and long-time environmentalist, died while diving in February. He was 72 years old.
Along with Jerome Friedman and Richard Taylor, he was one of the key members of the team studying the scattering of high-energy electron beams at the then new two-mile linear accelerator at SLAC, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, which in 1967 found the first experimental evidence for hard scattering centres deep inside the proton. These centres were to be identified as quarks. Prof. Kendall studied mathematics at Amherst College, graduating in 1950, and earned a physics PhD at MIT in 1955. He taught at Stanford from 1956 to 1961, before joining the MIT faculty in 1961 then becoming a full professor in 1967 and the J A Stratton professor of physics in 1991.
A founding member of the Union of Concerned Scientists in 1969, Prof. Kendall served as its chair for the past 25 years. He was deeply involved with arms control and nuclear power safety issues. He played a leading role in organizing scientific community statements on global problems, including the Call for Action at the Kyoto Climate Summit in 1997 and the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity in 1992. He was on a panel of scientists who briefed President Clinton on the dangers of global warming in 1997. For 10 years Prof. Kendall advised the Department of Defense as a member of the Jason Group and the Institute for Defense Analysis.

Source: Kendall, H. W., and David Pimentel. Constraints on the expansion of the global food supply. Ambio 23:198-205. With a growing population, our ability to expand the future food supply is of vital concern. Henry W. Kendall and David Pimentel summarize their ideas on the factors affecting our ability to expand the world food supply to meet the needs of the year 2050. The world population is now increasing at a rate of 1.7% per year. Improving the nutrition for this growing population will require dietary shifts, improved distribution of food, and an increased quantity of food. Soil degradation is one of the greatest threats with 10 million ha of soil lost every year. Abstract author: David R. Mahoney, 4 October 1995. Vol. 55, No. 3 REPORTS In memorium: Henry Kendall, Glenn Seaborg, Gerhard Herzberg
    By Mike Moore
Over a 14-day period this year, the world lost three distinguished scientists, Nobel laureates all, and all associated in some way with the Bulletin
Henry W. Kendall, 72, died February 18 while scuba diving in Florida's Wakulla Springs State Park with a mapping team from National Geographic magazine. Glenn Seaborg, who led the research team that discovered plutonium, died February 25 at his home in California. He was 86. And Gerhard Herzberg, one of Canada's greatest scientists, died March 3 in Ottawa at the age of 94. Starting in the late 1960s, Henry Kendall, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, worked with Jerome I. Friedman and Richard E. Taylor to better understand the nature of protons and neutrons, then thought to be the basic building blocks of matter. They discovered that protons and neutrons were actually composed of "quarks"; for that, they shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1990.
In 1969, Kendall became a founder of the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). He served as chairman of UCS from 1973 until his death.

You can also try telnetting into the National Library of Australia (or your favourite library ) and researching the writer. At a minimum you will get a list of books published, who published the book, and some other information as well. The National Library of Australia also have some manuscript resource pages for serious research.
