CAMBRIDGE, MAMIT Professor Henry W. Kendall of Sharon, MA, a 1990 Nobel Laureate in physics and longtime environmentalist, died Monday while exploring the wilderness he loved and worked to preserve. He was 72 years old. Professor Kendall, who shared the Nobel with his MIT colleague, Professor Jerome Friedman, and Professor Richard Taylor of Stanford University, was taking photographs on a scuba expedition with a friend from the National Geographic Society at the Wakulla Springs State Park in Florida when he died. Fellow divers found him unconscious in 6 to 10 feet of water at about 5pm. He was flown to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The medical examiner conducted an autopsy on Tuesday and ruled out drowning as a cause of death, according to a spokesman for the Wakulla County Sheriff's office. "We are looking at some other things at this time," the spokesman said, including the equipment Professor Kendall was using, indicating that his death was an accident. "Henry Kendall's death is a terrible loss to MIT, the scientific community and the world at large," said Professor Friedman. "Henry was an outstanding scientist and an outstanding human being who worked tirelessly for the betterment of society. He always saw the big picture and identified the big problems. He used political and scientific activity effectively to advance such goals as arms control, nuclear safety and a better environment.

http://www.kendall.org/about/history.html
Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical program, once recorded, will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with growing intensity.
The Henry P. Kendall Foundation is a legacy of its namesake, an early twentieth-century New England entrepreneur and industrialist (1878-1959) from Walpole, Massachusetts. Kendall's wide-ranging, venturesome business instincts led to acquisitions of factories and other companies through the company that bore his name, The Kendall Company.
Henry W. and John P. Kendall established the Norfolk Charitable Trust in 1957. Following the death of their father in 1959, they changed the name to the Henry P. Kendall Foundation in his honor. The Kendall Foundation began an emphasis on environmental concerns in the early 1970s by supporting land, water and wildlife conservation. A key component was the nurturance of environmental advocacy in Alaska as a national debate centered on which parts of more than one hundred million acres would gain long-term protection as national parks or wildlife refuges. A decade later, as the threat of nuclear war persisted into the 1980s, the Foundation focused on nuclear non-proliferation and arms-control activities. One of its grantees, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

South Caroliniana Library Opens Long-awaited Laurens Exhibit
Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Ackerman view the Laurens paper.
Dr. C. James Taylor held an audience of South Caroliniana Library supporters spellbound on October 16 as he recounted the saga of the life and writings of Revolutionary War-era statesman and native South Carolinian, Henry Laurens (1724-1792). Dr. Taylor’s talk was entitled, “A Long Journey Home: The Revolutionary War Papers of Henry Laurens.” The occasion was the opening of an exhibit of Laurens’ papers which had been returned to South Carolina after an absence of 134 years. The papers were acquired last spring through the generosity of the Henry W. Kendall family from whom the library had received the revered Kendall Map Collection in 1961. Henry Laurens was a wealthy Charleston planter and merchant who represented South Carolina at the Continental Congress of which he was elected president in 1777. En route to Holland in search of support for the colonies’ separation from England, Laurens was captured by the British and was held in the Tower of London for 15 months as a traitor. One of the most fascinating items in the Kendall Collection is the diary Laurens kept while he was imprisoned.

Henry P. Kendall Collection Finds New Home at the South Caroliniana Library
W hen the University of South Carolina formally received the Henry P. Kendall Collection of maps, books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and newspapers on October 29, 1961, it marked the most extensive and important research collection received by the University Libraries to that point. The occasion was also the second time that Henry P. Kendall's map collection had been exhibited at the South Caroliniana Library. The first public display, in what was then known as College Library Hall, was held in 1930. University of Michigan cartographer Louis Karpinski, Mr. Kendall's friend and fellow collector, compiled a catalogue of the collection entitled Early Maps of Carolina and Adjoining Regions: Together with Early Prints of Charleston from the Collection of Henry P. Kendall. Mr. Kendall continued to collect Caroliniana until his death in 1959.
