First Japanese novelist to win the Nobel Prize for Literature (1968). Many of Kawabata's books explore melancholically the place of sex in culture and the life of the individual. His works combined tradition with modernity, and realism with hallucinations. Kawabata was born in Osaka into a prosperous and cultured family. He was orphaned at the age of three. The family deaths deprived Kawakawa of normal childhood and he was raised by his grandparents. In 1920 he started his literature studies at Tokyo Imperial University, and graduated in 1924. With a group of young writers, Kawabata founded the journal Bungei Jidai (Contemporary Literature), an advocate of the Neo-Sensualist movement. Kawabata gained his first literary success in 1925 with the novella IZU NO ODORIKO (The Izu Dancer). The auto biographical work recounted his youthful infatuation with a fourteen-year-old dancer. The story ends with a separation.

Master Of Go - by Yasunari Kawabata
Kawabata won the Nobel Prize for Literature and, four years later, committed suicide. This book is a fictionalization of an actual go game which Kawabata covered for a newspaper. Go is a really complicated board game (played mainly in Japan), with fairly simple rules. The old go master is challenged to a marathon game of go, by a younger player. They make only a few moves a day. The pressure mounts to nearly unbearable levels as the game goes on, month after month. At one point, they are interrupted by a flood. As the game goes on, we see that the go master may not survive. The tension of the game is destroying his health. He dies shortly after the game ends. Very good story. Arranging the following quotes in the correct order they take place in the story follows: "'He is a high school boy,' one of the young women whispered to the little dancer, giggling as I glanced back. 'Really, even I know that much,' the girl retorted." "He wondered 'Who would be with her the rest of the night?'" "She was a child, a mere child, a child who could run out naked into the sun and stand there on her tiptoes in her delight at seeing a friend." "I took the book happily, a certain hope in my mind." "I had come at nineteen to think of myself as a misanthrope, a lonely misfit, and it was my depression at the thought that had driven me to this Izu trip." "I had explained that I would have to go back to Tokyo on the morning boat." "As we came to the pier I saw with a quick jump of the heart that the little dancer was sitting at the water's edge."

Exerpts from, Yasunari Kawabata, Japan the Beautiful and Myself. "Shinran (1173-1262), the founder of the Shin sect, once said: 'The good shall be reborn in paradise, and how much more shall that be the case with the bad.' This view of things has something in common with Ikkyuu's world of the Buddha and the world of the devil, and yet at heart the two have their different inclinations. Shinran also said, 'I shall not take a single disciple.' 'If you meet a Buddha, kill him. If you meet a patriarch of the law, kill him.' In these two statements, perhaps, is the rigorous fate of art." "'And what is it, the heart?
It is the sound of the pine breeze
there in the painting.'" "Here we have the spirit of Oriental painting. The heart of ink painting is in space, abbreviation, what is left undrawn. In the words of the Chinese painter Chin Nung: 'You paint the branch well, and you hear the sound of the wind.' And the priest Doogen once more: 'Are not these the cases? Enlightenment in the voice of the bamboo. Radience in the heart of the peach blossom.'" "The Japanese garden too, of course, symbolizes the vastness of nature. The Western garden tends to be symmetrical, the Japanese garden asymmetrical, for the asymmetrical has the power to symbolize multiplicity and vastness. The asymmetry, of course, rests upon a balance imposed by delicate sensibilities. Nothing is more complicated, varied, attentive to detail than the Japanese art of landscape gardening. Thus there is the form called the dry landscape, composed entirely of rocks, in which the arrangement of the rocks gives expression to mountains and rivers that are not present, and even suggests the waves of the great ocean breaking in upon cliffs."
