Yasunari Kawabata Yasunari Kawabata Japanese novelist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968. His melancholic lyricism echoes an ancient Japanese literary tradition in the modern idiom. The sense of loneliness and preoccupation with death that permeates much of Kawabata's mature writing possibly derives from the loneliness of his childhood (he was orphaned early and lost all near relatives while still in his youth). He graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in 1924 and made his entrance into the literary world with the semiautobiographical Izu no odoriko (1926; The Izu Dancer). It appeared in the journal Bungei jidai ("The Artistic Age"), which he founded with the writer Yokomitsu Riichi; this journal became the organ of the Neosensualist group with which Kawabata was early associated. This school is said to have derived much of its aesthetic from such post-World War I French literary currents as Dadaism and Expressionism. Their influence on Kawabata's novels may be seen in the abrupt transitions between separate brief, lyrical episodes; in imagery that is frequently startling in its mixture of incongruous impressions; and in his juxtaposition of the beautiful and the ugly. These same qualities, however, are present in Japanese prose of the 17th century and in the renga (linked verse) of the 15th century. It is to the latter that Kawabata's fiction seemed to draw nearer in later years.

Following is a partial translation in English of an unfinished work. Set in the Izu peninsula, south of Tokyo, it is about a high-school student’s encounter with a troupe of touring performers and his attraction to the pubescent dancer, in the period of his despondency. This semi-autobiographical classic is not as melancholic as his other stories and affirms the possibility of love. Yukio Mishima’s theory is that the young virgin is the epitome of the unattainable. On attainment, she becomes the object of the yearning. In the last sentence, the word ‘nothing’ is a translator’s compromise. In the Nobel lecture, Kawabata has expressed that the nothingness or emptiness in the East differs from the bleak nihilism of the West. Seidensticker Words fail me in the effort to express the superhuman act of will which was required to continue reading this book after the opening scene, wherein a young boy, Kikuji, spies his father's mistress clipping hairs from the birthmark which covers most of her breast. Try shaking that image from your head. At any rate, Kikuji, now a grown man, becomes involved with both another mistress of his now deceased father's and her daughter. Meanwhile, the birthmarked mistress somehow feels free to meddle in his life and tries to set him up with another young woman. All of this is set against the backdrop of the ritual of the ancient Japanese tea ceremony. Eventually, as it must, tragedy strikes as one woman after another commits suicide. Yeah, so? If the word dysfunctional did not exist, it would have to have been invented to describe Kikuji's romantic life. As if wading through your old man's detritus was not bad enough, topping it off by pursuing a mother and daughter would have to be described as begging for trouble. Add to this the fact that none of the characters are terribly likable and that Kikuji is almost completely passive and you've got a book that is hard to fathom or to like. Ultimately, I felt like there were too few suicidesI wanted them all put out of my misery and that birthmark trimming schtick purged from my memory.
