Women in science encouraged to learn
By CHRISTOPHR COLLAZO
Staff Writer Helene Langevin-Joliot, granddaughter of Nobel Laureates Marie and Pierre Curie, shared her perspective on women in today's technological society Thursday in the Performing Arts Center of the Student Union. Langevin-Joliot, professor at the University of Paris, presented a speech on the importance of women in science during a slide show which also included the achievements of her parents, Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Irene and Frederic Joliot-Curie, and grandparents, Marie and Pierre Curie. Langevin-Joliot joked that although her parents were an incentive for her and women around the world to join the field of science, she became a scientist because her parents never pushed her to become one. Langevin-Joliot said there weren't enough women in the sciences was because of cultural problems within societies that differ from country to country. "About 22 percent in my laboratory are women, which is not so high and not so low. We don't need 50 percent, we need to change the cultural problems," Langevin-Joliot said. Some of the cultural problems professor Langevin-Joliot discussed were the lack of students pushed towards the sciences and sexism within society.

89. IRENE JOLIET-CURIE
frederic Joliet visited the Institute in December, 1924 at which timehe met with Marie at the suggestion of his mentor, Paul Langevin.
http://www.woodrow.org/teachers/chemistry/institutes/1992/IreneJoliot-Curie.html
IRENE JOLIET-CURIE
After reading the accomplishments of this brilliant, dedicated scientist we wondered why we had heard so little of her before. She was overshadowed by those around her. She was overshadowed by Nobel laureate parents Marie and Pierre Curie, by co-laureate and husband Frederick J.-C., by physicist daughter Helene ,who married to Paul Langevin's grandson, and by biochemist son Pierre Joliet. In some ways she was even overshadowed by non-scientist sister Eve Denise Curie, who wrote the 1937 biography of her mother that inspired so many of us. This overshadowing, which has threatened to mask the significance of Irene's work, is illuminated poignantly, and perhaps unintentionally, by Francis Carter Wood, writing in Science Monthly in 1938: "Marie Curie by her chemical discovery of the element radium inaugurated what may be called modern physics, and it must have been to her a marvelous satisfaction that her daughter, Irene Joliet-Curie, has followed in her footsteps, making one discovery after another, which would render the name Curie imperishable had her mother never been famous." (1) He goes on to say, "It remains to Marie the singular distinction among women of having made the most revolutionary discovery in atomic physics."

Frédéric Joliot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jean Frédéric Joliot or Frédéric Joliot-Curie March 19 August 14 ) was a French physicist Born in Paris France , he was a graduate of the School of Chemistry and Physics of the city of Paris . In 1925 he became an assistant to Marie Curie , at the Radium Institute and would meet and marry her daughter Iréne Curie in 1926. Joliot obtained his doctorate in science, doing his thesis on the electrochemistry of radio-elements. While a lecturer at the Paris Faculty of Science he collaborated with his wife on research on the structure of the atom , in particular on the projection of nuclei, which was an essential step in the discovery of the neutron . In they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. In 1937 he left the Radium Institute to become a professor at the Collège de France working on chain reactions and the requirements for the successful construction of a nuclear reactor that uses controlled nuclear fission to generate energy through the use of uranium and heavy water . At the time of the Nazi invasion in 1940, Joliot managed to smuggle his working documents and materials to England.

From the obituary by James Chadwick in Nature, 177, 964 (1956):
beautiful discovery of artificial radioactivity . An interesting feature of this discovery is that it was so long in coming; for the phenomenon of artificial activity had been expected, and sought for, since the earliest days of radioactivity. For this discovery the Joliot-Curies were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. "About two years later ... with P. Savic, she examined in detail the artificial radioelements produced by the irradiation of uranium by slow neutrons, analysing the products and identifying them chemically, and she came within a hair's-breadth of recognizing that the phenomenon involved in the production of these elements was that of fission
Discovered , but did not fully identify, the radioactive isotope of lanthanum with half-life of 3.5 hours which is a fission product of neutron bombardment of uranium (with P. Savitch).
