Title
Frederic Joliot and Irene Joliot-Curie at the Institut du Radium
Description
Early in 1934 Frederic Joliot and Irene Joliot- Curie, working at the Institut du Radium in Paris, madEarly in 1934 Frederic Joliot and Irene Joliot- Curie, working at the Institut du Radium in Paris, made the discovery that brought them the Nobel prize and redirected much of experimental nuclear physics. In investigating the emission of positrons from aluminum struck by alpha particles, they observed that the target stayed active after the bombardment stopped. It was a great surprise. Everyone had tacitly assumed that the explosion of a nucleus followed immediately on its swallowing an energetic particle, and had arranged his experimental practice to suit. At the Rad Lab belief that residual activity does not exist affected operations. (The preceding information was excerpted from the text of the Fall 1981 issue of LBL Newsmagazine.) French physicists who made the discovery of artificial radioactivity, for which they were jointly awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
Irene was the daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie and began work at her mother's Radium Institute 1921. In 1926 she married Frederic, a pupil of her mother's, and they began a long and fruitful collaboration. In 1934 they found that certain elements exposed to radiation themselves become radioactive. Irene Curie was born and educated in Paris, becoming professor at the Sorbonne 1937. In 1946 she became director of the Radium Institute. She died of leukaemia caused by overexposure to radioactivity.
Frederic Joliot was born in Paris and graduated from the Ecole Superieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielle. He joined the Radium Institute 1925. In 1937 he became professor of nuclear physics at the College de France. He succeeded his wife as director of the Radium Institute 1956.
Together the Joliot-Curies worked on radioactivity and the transmutation of elements. In 1934, while bombarding light elements with alpha particles, they noticed that although proton production stopped when the alpha particle bombardment stopped, another form of radiation continued. The alpha particles had produced an isotope of phosphorus not found in nature. This isotope was radioactive and was decaying through beta-decay.

Irene (1897-1956) and Frederic Joliot-Curie (1900-1958), daughter and son-in-law of the Curies, continued the study of radioactivity, producing artificial radioisotopes by alpha bombardment of aluminum and other light nuclei, and also shared a Nobel Prize in chemistry for this work. Frederic continued research on uranium fission and the accompanying production of neutrons. He became the leader of the French atomic energy program. After World War II, he had a deep concern for world peace, becoming the first president of the World Council for Peace.

http://www.ee.vt.edu/~museum/women/icurie/icurie.html
I rene J oliot- C urie I rene Curie, daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie, was born on September 12, 1897 in Paris. As a child she was educated at home by her mother, but Irene would go on to finish her education at the University of Paris and the Faculty of Science. After 1918 she began helping her mother at the School of Radium of the University of Paris, and during World War I she served as a nurse radiographer. A young man named Frederic Joliot also became an assistant at the Institute of Radium, and there he met Irene. The two were married in 1926, and both took the name of Joliot-Curie. After their marriage the Joliot-Curies formed a great scientific team. Both specialized in nuclear physics, which enabled them to make their discovery that radioactive elements can be artificially formed from stable elements. The Joliot-Curies were awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their contribution to the field of nuclear research. Irene would not stop there, however, and went on to achieve many other honors. I W eb sites used to create this article: www.netsrq.com/~dbois/joliot.html

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Jean Frederic Joliot The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1935 F. Joliot was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and of the Academy of Medicine. He was also a member of numerous foreign scientific academies and societies, and holder of an honorary doctor's degree of several universities. He was a Commander of the Legion of Honor. His recreations show him as a man of wide attainments, among which piano playing, landscape painting and reading were predominant. He was awarded the Nobel Prize jointly with his wife "in recognition of their synthesis of new radioactive elements". In 1937 he was nominated Professor at the College de France. He left the Radium Institute and had built for his new laboratory of nuclear chemistry the first cyclotron in Western Europe. After the discovery of the fission of the uranium nucleus, he produced a physical roof of the phenomenon; then he worked on chain reactions and the requirements and the requirements for the successful construction of an atomic pile using uranium and heavy water. On the death of Irene Joliot-Curie, in 1956, he became, while still remaining his professorship at the College de France, holder of the Chair of Nuclear Physics which she had held at the Sorbonne.

Irene Joliot-Curie (1897-1956)
Irene Joliot-Curie, the oldest daughter of the Nobel Prize-winning physicists Marie and Pierre Curie, was a French physicist known for her work with radioactivity, especially the production of artificial radioactive elements. Joliot-Curie and her husband, Frederic, shared the 1935 Nobel Prize for chemistry. Unlike other young girls of this time, Irene's interest was considered by her parents to be completely normal. It was expected that she should pursue an advanced degree in science. Irene attended the University of Paris, where she graduated with a doctorate in physics. She served as her mother's assistant at the Radium Institute (now the Curie Institute), where she met Frederic Joliot. She later became a member of the French Atomic Energy Commission. Under the direction of this group, France put a nuclear reactor into operation in 1948.
In 1933, the Joliot-Curies determined the conditions under which positrons could be emitted when high-energy radioactive particles passed through matter. In 1934, they demonstrated that the bombardment of boron by alpha particles created a radioactive isotope of nitrogen. This discovery, which led to the production of artificial radioactive elements, resulted in their being awarded the Nobel Prize.
Like her mother, Irene died of leukaemia caused by years of radiation exposure, at age 58.
