Each year, at a gala ceremony in Harvard's Sanders Theatre, ten Ig Nobel Prizes are awarded for " achievements that cannot or should not be reproduced. " The Prizes are physically handed to the winners by genuinely bemused genuine Nobel Laureates. 1200 splendidly eccentric spectators watch the winners step forward to accept their Prizes. The ten prizes are given to people who have done remarkably goofy things some of them admirable, some perhaps otherwise. The Igs are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology.

2002 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry
The Ig Nobel prizes are awarded every year by the journal The Annals of Improbable Research for scientific work that "cannot or should not be reproduced". It is a very silly prize, given at a very silly ceremony by a very silly journal. It is, in fact, the highest scientific honor of the silly category in the world. And it is without doubt the highest honor for which the Periodic Table Table is eligible.
The Annals of Improbable Research's website lists all the winners, past and present . There was a live webcast of the awards ceremony on October 3, 2002, and there will be an archive version of the video at some point (but not yet). On the Friday after Thanksgiving there will be an audio broadcast of the ceremony on NPR's Science Friday with Ira Flatow : You can listen to an audio archive of the ceremony
On my own site I have a 23MB QuickTime of my acceptance speech , including the marvelous performance of Tom Lehrer's Elements song, or this shorter version which is only 13MB but doesn't include the song.
I arrived in Boston on Wednesday with Ed Pegg , the original popularizer of the Periodic Table Table website. We spent a delightful afternoon at the Peabody Museum visiting their delightful collection of minerals, and their truly amazing glass flowers. They have helpfully sorted their mineral collection by chemical makeup, all the native elements first, then all the sulfides, and so on. This allowed me to efficiently photograph all their native elements in one place: Most convenient. These pictures will form the foundation for a whole new category of samples on my website: External specimens, defined as things too interesting not to write up, but not physically present in the table. Such samples will be clearly identified and not counted towards the total number of samples in the table, so you can remain confident that all the regular samples you see documented on this website are physically present in or near the Periodic Table Table.

125. 1000 Women For The Nobel Peace Prize 2005
To represent these millions, it is our aim that in the year 2005 a thousand womenshall collectively receive the nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in pursuit
http://www.1000peacewomen.org/eng/html/
Millions of women work day in day out to promote peace. They care for survivors, help with reconstruction and initiate a new culture of peace. To represent these millions, it is our aim that in the year 2005 a thousand women shall collectively receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in pursuit of peace. This political prize will show that the work they do is valuable and exemplary. As their work is taken for granted and is usually unspectacular, it is neither acknowledged nor remunerated. With the exception of 11 women, the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, since it was first awarded in 1901, have been men. In negotiating terms of peace, many more warlords than peacequeens make decisions about security, reconstruction and new political structures. This despite the fact that women constantly prove that with their experience and competence , they can develop and put into practice sustainable peace programs. Our focus is on women worldwide individual origins and backgrounds, which have offered them, as the case may be, maybe wonderful opportunities, maybe only restricted options. In order that the world become aware of their histories and their work, light must be thrown on their

THE PLAY IS THE THING
October 9, 1997
TRANSCRIPT Italian playwright Dario Fo has won the Nobel prize for literature. The Swedish Academy cited the 71-year-old writer and actor for using laughter to open our eyes to injustices in society. His controversial works were denounced by the Vatican and barred from the United States. Two theater experts discuss his contribution to world literature, and his capacity for "epic clowning." A RealAudio version of this segment is available. NEWSHOUR LINKS: Former Nobel Prize winner Jose Ramos-Horta Browse the NewsHour's coverage of OUTSIDE LINKS The Nobel Foundation Homepage ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The art of Italian playwright Dario Fo is rooted in a very old comic tradition as John Tatlin of Independent Television News reports. A playwright with a very political message. JOHN TATLIN, ITN: Dario Fo, acting here in one of his own plays, was described the judge as emulating the jesters of the Middle Ages in scourging authority and upholding the dignity of the downtrodden. He's an unexpected choice, not least because he's a playwright but a popular one. He's more widely known than some recent Nobel Prize winners. He's still writing copiously, but his heyday was in the 70's when he wrote "The Accidental Death of an Anarchist," and "Can't Pay, Won't Pay." They both had strong political messages. The Nobel prize could help to keep his popularity alive. There's a large body of work, 70 plays, to choose from, and wherever they're performed he loves to get personally involved.

The Marshall Plan As the war-torn nations of Europe faced famine and economic crisis in the wake of World War II, the United States proposed to rebuild the continent in the interest of political stability and a healthy world economy. On June 5, 1947, in a commencement address at Harvard University, Secretary of State George C. Marshall first called for American assistance in restoring the economic infrastructure of Europe. Western Europe responded favorably, and the Truman administration proposed legislation. The resulting Economic Cooperation Act of 1948 restored European agricultural and industrial productivity. Credited with preventing famine and political chaos, the plan later earned General Marshall a Nobel Peace Prize. Shown here are the first and last pages of the resulting law, most commonly known as the Marshall Plan. The NARA Library features a number of links to information about the Marshall Plan. Press Release: The Nobel Prize for Literature 1981
Elias Canetti
Born in 1905, in the port of Rustschuk on the lower Danube, Elias Canetti
When surveyed, Elias Canetti's literary work may seem split up, comprising as it does of so many genres. His oeuvre consists of a novel, three plays, several volumes of notes and aphorisms, a profound examination of the origin, structures and effect of the mass movement, a travel book, portraits of authors, character studies, and memoirs; but these writings, pursued in such different directions, are held together by a most original and vigorously profiled personality.
The exiled and cosmopolitian author, Canetti has one native land, and that is the German language. He has never abandoned it, and he has often avowed his love of the highest manifestations of the classical German culture. He has warmly emphasized what Goethe, for instance, has meant to him as medicina mentis
His foremost purely fictional achievement is the great novel, Die Blendung ) published in 1935 and praised then by Thomas Mann and Hermann Broch. But it can be said to have attained its full effect during the last decades: against the background of national socialism's brutal power politics, resulting in a world conflagration, the novel acquires a deepened perspective.

ICBL - International Campaign to Ban Landmines - is a network of more than 1.400 non-governmental organizations in 90 countries, working for a global ban on Landmines. Co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) calls for:
  • An international ban on the use, production, stockpiling, and sale, transfer, or export of antipersonnel landmines The signing, ratification, implementation, and monitoring of the mine ban treaty Increased resources for humanitarian demining and mine awareness programs Increased resources for landmine victim rehabilitation and assistance
Your browser does not support frames, please open this page As some search engines aren't smart enough to see that landmines is the same thing as land mines and also that the words land mine would make into the same thing as a landmine I had to write this little paragraph down here. By writing land mine and land mines a couple of times down here one could hope that those search engines would get the idea without thinking that we try to fool them. Just to make it very clear also - that the International Campaign to Ban Landmines is not different from the International Campaign to Ban Land Mines. We are, in fact, very much in favours of banning land mines or landmines if you prefer that. Or some could maybe say a landmine ban, again land mine ban would be the same. We are also in favour of banning anti-personnel landmines or banning antipersonnel land mines. Some say antipersonnel mines and others like to use anti-personnel. Others again don't exactly know how to spell and will put antipersonel or antipersonnell.

136. William Faulkner: Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
This is a copy of the acceptance speech by William Faulkner for the nobel Prize for Literature in 1950.
http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/faulkner/faulkner.html
William Faulkner
"No matter how piercing and appalling his insights, the desolation creeping over his outer world, the lurid lights and shadows of his inner world, the writer must live with hope, work in faith."
J.B. Priestley "I decline to accept the end of man." William Faulkner: Nobel Prize Speech
Stockholm, Sweden
December 10, 1950 "All his life William Faulkner had avoided speeches, and insisted that he not be taken as a man of letters. 'I'm just a farmer who likes to tell stories.' he once said. Because of his known aversion to making formal pronouncements, there was much interest, when he traveled to Stockholm to receive the prize on December 10, 1950, in what he would say in the speech that custom obliged him to deliver. Faulkner evidently wanted to set right the misinterpretation of his own work as pessimistic. But beyond that, he recognized that, as the first American novelist to receive the prize since the end of World War II, he had a special obligation to take the changed situation of the writer, and of man, into account."
Richard Ellmann I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my worka life's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before. So this award is only mine in trust. It will not be difficult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensurate with the purpose and significance of its origin. But I would like to do the same with the acclaim too, by using this moment as a pinnacle from which I might be listened to by the young men and women already dedicated to the same anguish and travail, among whom is already that one who will some day stand where I am standing.
