(Joseph) Rudyard Kipling
Born: December 30, 1865, Bombay, India.
Died: January 18, 1936, London, England.
Awarded the Nobel prize in literature, 1907.
Parents: Lockwood and Alice Kipling. Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay on December 30, 1865, in the J. J. School of Arts , of which, his father, Lockwood Kipling, was then head. At the age of six, he was left in a foster home in England. He was extremely unhappy at his foster home, but stayed there until 1878, when he entered a boarding school in England. His later writings indicate that he was happy at school, where he started writing. He returned to India in 1882 and joined his parents in Lahore where he worked as a journalist with Civil and Military Gazette . In 1887 he joined The Pioneer in Allahabad as an assistant editor and overseas correspondent. Before he went back to England and settled in London in 1889, he had already become famous for his verses and satirical writings such as Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) and Soldiers Three By the last decade of the nineteenth century Rudyard Kipling had become enormously successful as a poet and writer, and was seen as a successor to Charles Dickens. He married Caroline Starr Balestier in 1892. His two novels

Prof. Ryoji Noyori won Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2001 for the development of catalytic asymmetric synthesis, with one half jointly to William S. Knowles
St Louis, Missouri, USA, and Ryoji Noyori
Nagoya University, Chikusa, Nagoya, Japan, "for their work on chirally catalysed hydrogenation reactions" and the other half to K. Barry Sharpless
the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California, USA, "for his work on chirally catalysed oxidation reactions". Mirror Image Catalysis
Many molecules appear in two forms that mirror each other ? just as our hands mirror each other. Such molecules are called chiral. In nature one of these forms is often dominant, so in our cells one of these mirror images of a molecule fits "like a glove", in contrast to the other one which may even be harmful. Pharmaceutical products often consist of chiral molecules, and the difference between the two
forms can be a matter of life and death ? as was the case, for example, in the thalidomide disaster in the 1960s. That is why it is vital to be able to produce the two chiral forms separately.

Abel Prize Awarded: The Mathematicians' Nobel
The Abel Prize, established by the Norwegian government in 2001 as an annual "Nobel Prize for Mathematics" and first awarded last year, will go this year to Professor Isadore Singer, 80, of MIT and Sir Michael Atiyah, 75, who has held an honorary position at the University of Edinburgh since he retired from Cambridge University a few years ago. The prize is being given for the work that led to the names Atiyah and Singer being forever linked in the field of mathematics: the "Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem", which they formulated and proved in a series of papers they published in the early 1960s. The Index Theorem provides a bridge between pure mathematics (differential geometry, topology, and analysis) and theoretical physics (quantum field theory) that has led to advances in both fields. The Norwegian Academy of Science, which oversees and manages the new prize, referred to the Index Theorem as "one of the great landmarks of 20th century mathematics". In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that the result changed the landscape of mathematics. Atiyah, who trained as an algebraic geometer and topologist, and Singer, who came from analysis, worked on ramifications of the theorem for twenty years. Sir Michael, quoted in an article in Britain's

Scientists win chemistry Nobel
Wuethrich is a chemist with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich Story Tools
STOCKHOLM, Sweden American, Japanese and Swiss scientists have won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. John Fenn of the United States, Japan's Koichi Tanaka and Kurt Wuethrich of Switzerland received the award on Wednesday for developing methods of identifying and analysing large biological molecules, such as proteins. "Their work has paved the way for the future finding of a cure for cancer," said Bengt Norden, chairman of the Nobel committee for chemistry. "Without it, there would be no modern pharmaceuticals." The work developed by the trio, who will share the $1 million prize, could lead to new drugs to tackle disease and has shown promise in early diagnosis of ovarian, breast and prostate cancer. Tanaka, 43, is the youngest chemistry laureate since 1967 and the second Japanese Nobel winner this year following Masatoshi Koshiba, one of the physics laureates.

In a last minute shift, most Nobel watchers put Havel at the top of their list after initially favoring the Pope, who is marking his 25th anniversary as leader of the Roman Catholic Church and who strongly opposed the war in Iraq. John Paul has been outspoken in calling for an end to Israeli-Palestinian fighting. He also lobbied vigorously against the Iraq war in the months and weeks leading up to the U.S.-led invasion. Web-based betting site Centrebet gave John Paul 2-1 odds of winning the prize, ahead of Havel (8-1), who received this year's Gandhi Peace Prize.

The following is a transcript of the Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter delivered Tuesday in Oslo, Norway: CARTER : Your majesties, members of the Nobel Committee in Norway, your excellencies, distinguished guests, it is with a deep sense of gratitude that I accept this prize. I'm grateful to my wife, Rosalynn, to my colleagues at the Carter Center, and to many others who continue to seek an end to violence and suffering throughout the world. The scope and character of our center's activities are perhaps unique, the center's activities are unique, but in many other ways, they are typical of the work being done by hundreds of nongovernmental organizations that strive for human rights and peace. Most Nobel laureates have carried out our work in peace and safety. Others have acted with great personal courage. None has provided more vivid reminders of the dangers of peacekeeping than two of my close friends, [assassinated Egyptian President] Anwar Sadat and [assassinated Israeli Prime Minister] Yitzhak Rabin, who gave their lives for the cause of peace in the Middle East.

The Prize
The Nobel Prize is the first international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma, and a prize amount. In 1968, the Sveriges Riksbank (Bank of Sweden) instituted the Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize.
In the beginning, more than three prize winners could share a Nobel Prize, although this was never practiced. Paragraph four of the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation was amended in 1968, restricting the number of prizewinners to only three.
Previously, a person could be awarded a prize posthumously if the nomination was made before February 1 of the same year. Since 1974, the Prize may only go to a deceased person who has been named as prize winner for the year (usually in October) but who dies before the Prize Award Ceremony on December 10.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Chemistry is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement."
