Kapitelübersicht: Sir John Carew Eccles
Sir John Carew Eccles
Neurophysiologe Sir John Carew Eccles * 27. American Medical Association Institute for Biomedical Research State University of New York in Buffalo.

'Coin of the realm'
Equation named for George Zahalak
By Tony Fitzpatrick
George Zahalak, Eng., ScD. (right), professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, and Afshin Shiravi, an electrical engineering graduate student, observe the output of the "Huxley-Zahalak Equation," which models mathematically the interaction between the proteins actin and myosin, the basis for the contraction of skeletal muscle and other tissues. Zahalak has been recognized for his role in the equation in a recently published book on muscle mechanics.
George I. Zahalak, Eng.ScD., professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, has received a singular honor: A fundamental equation in the molecular theory of muscle contraction has been named the "Huxley-Zahalak Equation," for him and Sir Andrew Fielding Huxley. Authors Marcello Epstein and Walter Herzog named the equation for Huxley and Zahalak in their book, "Theoretical Models of Skeletal Muscle: Biological and Mathematical Considerations," published by John Wiley and Sons, New York. Huxley shared a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1963 for work he did with collaborators on the transmission of neural signals. According to Zahalak, Huxley is perhaps best known in biomedical and engineering sciences for the Hodgkin-Huxley Equations, which made possible a detailed quantitative understanding of neural conduction based on sound biophysical data.

"Huxley-Zahalak Equation" Honors WU Engineer George I. Zahalak, professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, has received a singular honor: a fundamental equation in the molecular theory of muscle contraction has been named the Huxley-Zahalak Equation, for him and Sir Andrew Fielding Huxley. Authors Marcello Epstein and Walter Herzog named the equation for Huxley and Zahalak in their book, Theoretical Models of Skeletal Muscle: Biological and Mathematical Considerations (John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1998). Huxley shared a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1963 for work he did with collaborators the transmission of neural signals. Zahalak says Huxley is perhaps best known in biomedical and engineering sciences for the Hodgkin-Huxley Equations, which made possible a detailed quantitative understanding of neural conduction based on sound biophysical data. "For the last 40 years, Huxley has concentrated on the molecular mechanisms of muscle contraction and published a first version of his mathematical theory in a now-classic paper in 1957," Zahalak says. "That paper contained a simplified version that is valid only for steady-state conditions, whereas the equation to which they appended my name holds for arbitrary, time-varying conditions."

Daughters of Lt General Andrew Gammell
Lt. General ANDREW GAMMELL and MARTHA STEGELDOIR had four daughters, and although it is believed they were all born in London, we have no details of their birth dates. Details such as we know are as follows: James Gammell the banker in 1825. 2. JESSIE GAMMELL 1794 - ? The second daughter married a man called JOSEPH PEILE. Who he was, or what he did, we do not know, nor do we know the date of the marriage, other than it was before Jessie's father died in October 1815, as in his will she is excluded from inheritance, other than a small annuity 'for marrying a blackguard'. The will does not even mention the name of her husband, so for some reason or other, General Andrew must have thought his son-in-law a very undesirable person indeed. What happened to Jessie later on we do not know, except that she and her husband had a family. Janet Peile b. Jan 1815 Joseph Piele b Sept 1817 Martha Gammell Piele b. Jul 1818 Laura Piele b Feb 1819 Alfred Piele b Jun 1820 William Piele b 19 Jul 1821 Maria Peile b 26 Sept 1822 3. MARGARET GAMMELL 1798 - ? Of this third daughter we know absolutely nothing, other that that she was alive at the time of her father's death in 1815 as she, like his other children shared equally his estate. On the other hand she is not mentioned in the will of her grandfather, James Gammell the banker, ten years later as are two of her sisters, and therefore it is just possible she died young, but of this there is again no evidence.

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity Thomas Henry Huxley ( ), popularly known as 'Darwin's Bulldog' because of his defence of the theories of Charles Darwin ( ), was a much more complex person than this simplistic image of an unquestioning defender of Darwinism would suggest. Though his father was a school mathematics teacher and assistant headmaster, Huxley had little formal schooling (by some accounts, no more than two years in all), and he was largely self-taught. His talent for drawing, which was useful to him in later life when describing the animals he investigated, was already clear when he was a child. He had initially hoped to study mechanical engineering, but was pressured by his family into studying medicine. Aged 14, Huxley attended a post-mortem, and seems to have caught a disease or poisoning (the nature of which is not known precisely) that affected his health for the rest of his life, requiring occasional recuperative trips to the countryside. Huxley studied medecine at Charing Cross hospital, and graduated with an MB from the recently founded University of London in
