"We met today to review the present situation. In April last year we pointed out that everyone has a solemn duty to assist in the search for a lasting peace. Since then we have applied ourselves unremittingly to this task. As a result there has been an unprecedented focus on the development of an effective peace process. Last Easter we indicated that we were investigating the possibility of developing an overall political strategy to establish justice and peace in Ireland. We are at present addressing this area in particular and we believe that the essential ingredients of such a strategy may now be available. A just and lasting peace in Ireland will only be achieved if it is based on democratic principles. It is clear that an internal settlement is not a solution. Both governments and all parties have already agreed that all relationships must be settled. All that has been tried before has failed to satisfactorily resolve the conflict or remove the political conditions which give rise to it. If a lasting settlement is to be found there must be a fundamental and thorough-going change, based on the right of the Irish people as a whole to national self-determination.

PEACE: [Menu] [Summary] [Reading] [Background] ... [Sources]

"In our first joint statement in April 1993 we acknowledged that the most pressing issue facing the people of Ireland and Britain today is the question of a lasting peace and how it can be achieved and committed ourselves to addressing this issue. This has been our primary focus. It is our view that inclusive negotiations are the only way of reaching agreement and achieving a just and lasting peace for all the people of this island. We regret that, despite our collective efforts, inclusive and meaningful negotiations were not put in place and that the unprecedented opportunity created by the IRA cessation of August 1994 was wasted. Our principle concern is that this dreadful mistake is not repeated.
At our meeting last night we reviewed progress in removing the obstacles, erected by the previous British government, to an inclusive and meaningful negotiations process. These obstacles have been used tactically to prevent progress in the talks process at Stormont. We welcome the moves that have been made to remove these obstacles by the new Irish and British governments.
A just and lasting settlement will only be achieved if it is based on principles of democracy and equality and has the allegiance of both traditions.

John Hume Talks John Hume has been at the centre of Northern Irish politics for nearly three decades. He spoke to Maria O-Loughlin about a lifetime committed to the community. What were your parents like? My father was very active in the community, in the sense that he was a brilliant had-writer. People used to come to him to write their letters and for me normality would sitting at a wooden table at night doing my homework and one of the neighbours would be in getting letters written. The letters would be about their problems and to me as a child, the problems of people were normality - unemployment and housing and so on. So from a very early age, I was aware of what the problems were. My mother was a very warm person, very outgoing person and she was well known in the neighbourhood. When she went downtown shopping on the bus, she used to bring back goods for the older neighbours who weren't able to travel. There was that great sense of sharing among people. They were very committed to education weren't they?

(John Hume and David Trimble were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1998 for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland. The Academy of Achievement interviewed both men in Dublin, Ireland on June 8, 2002. Their interviews are combined here.) Mr. Hume, tell us a little bit about your background. You grew up in Derry, didn't you? I grew up in Derry, of course, and it was Derry was the worst example of Northern Ireland's discrimination. Of course, the Unionist people, wishing to protect their heritage and their identity and they've every right to do that, in my opinion, because...
...every society has diversity, and respect for diversity is central and essential. video audio broadband It was a kind of ghettoization, wasn't it? Total ghettoization, because they were in charge of public housing, the local council, and they deliberately located people in a ghetto situation in order to ensure that they maintained control. How did this affect your own family? Your father, we understand, was unemployed.
