Cordell Hull Lake was constructed and is maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, attracting millions of visitors each year. The lake was named after Cordell Hull, one of America's outstanding statesmen, who served under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.. Cordell Hull Dam is located at mile marker 313.5 on the Cumberland River in Smith County, Tennessee, 48 miles east of Nashville and 26 miles northwest of Cookeville. The reservoir is located in Smith, Jackson and Clay Counties in Tennessee. Construction of the reservoir began May 25, 1963. The dam was closed and filling of the reservoir began February, 1973. The first generator went into operation August 9, 1973. The initial cost of the Cordell Hull project totaled $79,200,000. Cordell Hull Dam has a maximum height of 93 feet, and a maximum width of 1,306 feet, with 468 feet of that being earth and embankment. Construction of the dam took 338,800 cubic yards of concrete. Cordell Hull Lake offers 381 miles of shoreline. At normal maximum pool, the reservoir contains 259,100 acre feet of water, with a surface area of 12,210 acres.

Biography
Cordell Hull
American Statesman
Born: October 2, 1871 Tennessee
Died: July 23,1955 Bethesda, Maryland Though his exact birthplace is in dispute (one source gives it as Overton County, another as Star Point, Pickens County) we can be certain he was among the last American politicians who could truthfully claim to have first seen the light of day in a log cabin. His character was every bit as roughhewn as those of two other sons of the Appalachian frontier, Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson. This son of a lumberjack and moonshiner was an excellent student and gained admission to the Tennessee bar before he was 20. He became a circuit court judge and in 1906 made his first run for Congress winning the seat by 17 votes. The Harding landslide swept this strong advocate of the League of Nations from office in 1920 but two year he regained his old seat and held on to it until 1931 when he entered the Senate. Hull concentrated on tariff reform during his brief Senate tenure which ended in 1933 when Franklin Roosevelt appointed him Secretary of State. Hull was influential in gaining Congressional approval for Roosevelt’s foreign policies particularly in the areas of trade and Latin American relations. The depression was at its peak and Hull’s response was to push for a reversal of the high tariff policies which had produced disastrous effects on American exports. He first broached the subject at an Inter-American Conference in Montevideo in December, 1933 where it was given a favorable response. He was instrumental in the passage of the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act by Congress in March 1934. The act led to tariff reduction talks with several of America’s trading partners before it was replaced by the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) in 1948.

Cordell Hull
Cordell Hull , born October 2 in Pickett County, Tennessee , died July 23 , was Secretary of State of the United States from under Franklin Delano Roosevelt , and was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in His political career began in the House of Representatives in 1907, in which he served for 22 years. While a representative, he fought for low tariffs, and authored the first Federal Income Tax Bill in 1913 (as well as a revision of that bill in 1916) and the Federal and State Inheritance Tax Law in 1916. He left the House for the Senate in 1931, only to be named Secretary of State in FDR's first administration in 1933. His policies encouraged trade and helped to lower tariffs, and his cautionary approach to the developments in Eastern Asia in the 1930s helped prepare the U.S. government for the war with Japan. In his role as Secretary of State, he was integrally involved in the unsuccessful attempt at a peaceful diplomatic resolution with the Empire of Japan in 1940-41; assessments of Hull's efforts range widely among historians, from lauding his work as strong and necessary to deriding it as overly aggressive and war-inciting. Hull is most noted for being one of the conceivers and most ardent supporters of the United Nations . He was the main figure pushing the State Department to write the "Charter of the United Nations", which it accomplished by mid-1943. Hull resigned the position of Secretary of State in November 1944 because of failing healthRoosevelt said upon Hull's departure that he was "the one person in all the world who has done this most to make this great plan for peace [the United Nations] an effective fact". Hull was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 in recognition of his efforts for peace and understanding in the
