Discovery links new form of inheritance in yeast to "mad-cow" type diseases

Researchers from the Howard Hughes Institute at the University of Chicago have discovered that a chaperone protein from yeast, which helps proteins to change their shapes, controls a new, protein-only form of inheritance, called a yeast prion. They have now isolated the chaperone and prion proteins and shown that they can produce such shape changes right in the test tube. The chaperone is very specific for certain target proteins and ignores most other proteins in the cell. December 1, 1997

American chemist who was a pioneer in the development of wash- and- wear fabrics. Earlier, she investigated fat emulsions and transport of fat in animals. For the Office of the Surgeon General, she developed an intravenous fat emulsion for intravenous feeding to help supply necessary calories for long term patients. Benerito also investigated the reaction epoxies. Her findings have been used not only in the textile industry but also to paper, film, and epoxy plastic manufacturers, and they have been applied in the use of epoxy compounds to preserve wood. Benerito has been granted over 50 patents. Her research has resulted in the development of cotton fabrics that are crease and stain resistant, comfortable, and "drip-dry" and better able to retard flames. Sergey Pavlovich Korolev

Soviet designer of guided missiles, rockets, and spacecraft. He was one of the founders of Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion. In 1933, he participated in the Soviet Union's first launch of a liquid-propellant rocket. Because he was not a member of the Communist Party, he spent much of his life under house arrest. After demonstrating his expertise in the modification of captured V2 rockets, Korolev directed the design, testing, construction, and launching of the Vostok spacecraft, and most of the U.S.S.R.'s other projects. Around 1958, Korolev argued for the pursuit of manned space flight instead of military reconnaissance satellites. After much debate, the Vostok project was approved provided the launch vehicle could also be useful to the military.

The Importance of Discovery: An Interview with Dr. Shutsung Liao
    By Miriam Kritzer Van Zant
Department of Plant Biology, M/C 6509
Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL 62901-6509
Dr. Shutsung Liao is the director of the new Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research at the University of Chicago (UC). (For more on the Tang Center see EBL Spring/Summer 2000: http://www.siu.edu/~ebl/tang.htm ) The Tang Center is independent of all other groups within the university. It is housed in the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research at UC Medical Center. Dr. Liao is also a member of the Ben May Institute, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and in the Committee on Cancer Biology at UC. Dr. Liao's insights into biochemistry and natural products chemistry include comments on the mechanism of action of hormones, therapy for prostrate cancer and other hormonal problems, many associated with aging, and the similarity to hormonal action of gamma-Linoleic acid (GLA) from evening primrose oil, and of (-) Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), from green tea. This interview with Dr. Liao showcases his genuine humility, as well as his thoughts on research, discovery, and his devotion to his former mentor, Charles Huggins, MD. Dr. Huggins, a urologist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1966 for his work on prostrate and breast cancer. Huggins founded the Ben May Laboratory, which was the forerunner of the Institute, and the place where Dr. Liao did his graduate research. Dr. Huggins stressed creativity, and said that science is the art of the 20th century. Dr. Liao also believes in the importance of creativity in research. He needed little prompting, so the interview follows his choice of topics. He spoke with EBL on May 30, 2000. We hope you get the same pleasure reading this that we experienced in talking with Dr. Liao.

    CME Information
    Release date: December 22, 2003
Expiration date: December 22, 2004 Meeting the Challenges of Prostate Cancer Treatment
3rd Annual Charles Huggins Symposium Course Description
This Webcast program is dedicated to the research of Charles Brenton Huggins, the only urologist to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1966), for revealing the role of hormones in the growth and treatment of cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer has changed the face of this disease, particularly in the later stages. The use of hormonal therapy and the treatment of prostate cancer are evolving rapidly. This webcast program reviews recent advances in the diagnosis of prostate cancer and its treatment with hormonal therapy. Objectives
Upon completion of this CME activity, it is anticipated that participants should be better able to:
-Discuss the changing demographics of prostate cancer
-Explain the concept of risk assessment using multiple prognostic factors
-Discuss the significance of timing of hormonal therapy
-Describe treatment options available for the use of hormonal therapy Target Audience
This continuing medical education activity is intended for Urologists.
