Peyton Rous
Abstract
For his pioneering research on the link between viruses and cancer, the pathologist Francis Peyton Rous was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1966. Working primarily at the mainly at the Rockefeller Institute after 1909, Rous first came to notice for his theoretical construction of the first blood bank for use in France during World War I, a plan ultimately implemented by his assistant, Oswald H. Robertson. Subsequently, he left an important imprint on the development of experimental medicine, partly through his own research on the origins of cancer and his administrative activities at the Rockefeller, but also as editor of the Journal of Experimental Medicine from 1921-1970. The Rous Papers include correspondence, lectures, articles, reports, laboratory records, reprints, and photographs that document all aspects of the life and work of Peyton Rous. Reflecting his work at the Institute are letters of colleagues, information on assistants, and reports to the directors (1909-1959). Additional material relates to Rous' diverse organizational interests, including the American Cancer Society, Century Association, Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research (at Yale University), Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, Johns Hopkins University, National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, New York Academy of Medicine, Royal Society of Medicine Foundation, and Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research

Host factors affecting the growth of carcinogen-induced rat mammary carcinomas: a review and tribute to Charles Brenton Huggins
CW Welsch
The carcinogen-induced rat mammary carcinoma model, developed a quarter of a century ago by Dr. Charles Brenton Huggins, is today the standard laboratory animal model in the study of human breast cancer. This model has a number of features that make it particularly attractive to the experimental oncologist, e.g., tumor induction ease and reliability, organ site specificity, tumors of ductal origin, tumors of predominantly carcinomatous histopathological characteristics, tumors of varying growth factor and/or hormone responsiveness, and the potential to examine tumor

http://ben-may.bsd.uchicago.edu/bmi/about/letter.html
Search Jump To: Home About Us Faculty News / Events Employment Support Computing Administration Symposium Over the past several years, there have been an increasing number of reports in the media about breakthroughs in cancer research. Inevitably in these cases, the pronounced excitement of some of the most celebrated scientific minds, televised for the world to see and quoted in newspaper and magazine articles the world over, fuels the public's fascination. The thrill of the moment seizes the press and eventually the unlikely possibility of a "magic bullet" which will single-handedly rid the world of cancer's evil specter is once again raised. In time, however, calmer heads prevail, the media attention wanes, the world of science returns to its methodical course, and cancer, as before, seems just a step ahead of the good guys almost as if nothing had changed. But, in fact, things have changed - the change has been happening slowly and quietly for the entire twenty-plus years since the War on Cancer was declared in the early '70s. It's just that change happens differently in the scientific world. For every blockbuster discovery reported in the media, there are hundreds if not thousands of smaller, just as meaningful, breakthroughs reported each month in scientific journals. They are the pieces of a massively complex puzzle, placed ever so delicately into position, revealing only a part of the big picture but guiding us in our search for the next piece.
