64. Godfrey N. Hounsfield - Autobiography
godfrey N. hounsfield – Autobiography. I way. In company I enjoy livelywayout discussions. From Les Prix nobel 1979.
http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1979/hounsfield-autobio.html
I was born and brought up near a village in Nottinghamshire and in my childhood enjoyed the freedom of the rather isolated country life. After the first world war, my father had bought a small farm, which became a marvellous playground for his five children. My two brothers and two sisters were all older than I and, as they naturally pursued their own more adult interests, this gave me the advantage of not being expected to join in, so I could go off and follow my own inclinations.
During this time I was learning the hard way many fundamentals in reasoning. This was all at the expense of my schooling at Magnus Grammar School in Newark, where they tried hard to educate me but where I responded only to physics and mathematics with any ease and moderate enthusiasm.
Aeroplanes interested me and at the outbreak of the second world war I joined the RAF as a volunteer reservist. I took the opportunity of studying the books which the RAF made available for Radio Mechanics and looked forward to an interesting course in Radio. After sitting a trade test I was immediately taken on as a Radar Mechanic Instructor and moved to the then RAF-occupied Royal College of Science in South Kensington and later to Cranwell Radar School. At Cranwell, in my spare time, I sat and passed the City and Guilds examination in Radio Communications. While there I also occupied myself in building large-screen oscilloscope and demonstration equipment as aids to instruction, for which I was awarded the Certificate of Merit.

SIR GODFREY HOUNDSFIELD
Hounsfield, Godfrey N. (Newark, Nottinghamshire 1919), ingegnere elettrotecnico britannico.

Hounsfield units are also termed CT numbers (Table 1). Also see Hounsfield unit Hounsfield unit, Table 1. Sample CT numbers for various tissues. Tissue CT number (HU) Bone Liver White matter (brain) Grey matter (brain) Blood Muscle Kidney Cerebrospinal fluid Water Fat Air In accordance with this system, lesions whose attenuation values are close to that of water are consistent with, but not specific for, cysts. Lesions composed solely or predominantly of fat produce negative CT numbers; however, some types of liposarcoma contain great amounts of fat, and some forms of lipoma reveal abundant nonfatty tissue. haematomas characteristically demonstrate inhomogeneous areas with regions of both high attenuation (approximately 50 HU) and low attenuation (approximately 10 HU) in the subacute stage and homogeneous areas of low attenuation (120 HU) in the chronic stage. The measurement of attenuation values of bone lesions may be more difficult, especially in narrow bones in which the contribution of the cortex may prohibit accurate assessment. The identification of gas in soft tissue or bone by CT is possible owing to its very low attenuation value. Gas within a vertebral body documented by CT, for example, is an important sign of ischaemic necrosis of bone. Intraosseous gas is also identified in some cases of osteomyelitis and in subchondral cysts (

Axial
The plane of section that runs from the front to the back of the body, dividing it into top and bottom parts. Also known as transaxial, cross, or transverse section.
B
(MRI)
(B zero) is the symbol used to represent the main (constant) magnetic field of the MRI scanner. Expressed in Tesla (MRI)
(B one) is the symbol used to represent the radio frequency field of the MRI system. It is produced by the RF coil at the Larmor frequency

The plane of section which runs from one side of the body to the other and divides the body into front and back parts.
D
E
Electromagnet (MRI)
A magnet which is magnetized by a current-carrying coil round it. These can produce much larger magnetic field than permanent magnets.
F
Faraday shield (MRI)
A metal mesh or sheet which blocks electric fields. Faraday shields are used in most MRI rooms to prevent unwanted radio waves from entering the room and affecting the image. Also prevents RF radio waves from leaving the room and interfering with other equipment. Fourier Transform (MRI)
Mathematical calculation performed in MRI which allows the computer to transform the radio signal into data that can be used to generate an image.
