    60. History Of The Biochemistry Department
The Department of Biochemistry dates from 1914 when Dr F. (later sir frederick)gowland hopkins was elected to a personal Professorship of Biochemistry.
    http://www.bioc.cam.ac.uk/history.html
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Biochemistry dates from 1914 when Dr F. (later Sir Frederick) Gowland Hopkins was elected to a personal Professorship of Biochemistry. In 1920 the Trustees for the estate of Sir William Dunn made an allocation of funds to the University of Cambridge for the purpose of establishing a School of Biochemistry. Funds were provided both to establish a Chair of Biochemistry and also to provide a building to house the new Department of Biochemistry. Gowland Hopkins was elected to the Sir William Dunn Chair and the Sir William Dunn Institute of Biochemistry was opened in 1924. Subsequent holders of the Chair have been Professor A.C. Chibnall, FRS. (1943-1949), Professor Sir Frank Young, FRS. (1949-1975), and Professor Sir Hans Kornberg, FRS. (1975- 1995). Professor Tom .L. Blundell FRS , former Professor of Crystallography at Birkbeck College, London was elected to succeed Sir Hans. Professor Blundell joined the Department on 1 October 1996, having completed his term of office as Chief Executive of BBSRC, and received a knighthood in the New Years Honours, 1997. He is also Head of Department, a position held for the previous 11 years by Professor Richard Perham FRS.
