Hopkins, Sir Frederick Gowland English biochemist whose research into diets revealed the necessity of certain trace substances, now known as vitamins, for the maintenance of health. Hopkins shared the 1929 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Christiaan Eijkman , who had arrived at similar conclusions.
Hopkins also established that there are certain amino acids that the body cannot produce itself. Another discovery he took part in was that contracting muscle accumulates lactic acid.
Hopkins was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, and studied at the University of London and Guy's Hospital Medical School. In 1914 he was appointed professor of biochemistry at Cambridge.
Experimenting on rats fed on artificial milk, Hopkins noticed in 1906 that animals cannot survive on a diet containing only proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. When a small quantity of cow's milk was added, the rats grew. He concluded that the milk must contain accessory food factors in trace amounts, but he failed to isolate these.

Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins Memorial Lecture
The lecturer, selected from nominations to the Awards Committee, is asked to assess the impact of recent advances in his or her particular field, on developments in biochemistry. The lecturer does have considerable discretion in his/her choice of subject. He/she may choose to discuss advances made in other fields of knowledge that have significant implications in his/her own field of biochemistry, or discuss how advances in biochemistry have impacted upon other disciplines.
The award is made every 2/3 years and the lecturer is presented with a medal and £1,000. The lecture is published in Biochemical Society Transactions The current recipient of the medal is Professor Chris Somerville of the Carnegie Institute, Stanford, CA, USA whose lecture is to be given at the Plant Signalling from Genes to Biochemistry Focused Meeting in November. PORTRAITS AND NARRATIVES Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins The sitter (1861 - 1947) was President of the Royal Society in London from 1930 - 1935. Richard Morphet's catalogue of Frampton's works shown at the Tate Gallery in 1982 sketches Sir Frederick's achievement in establishing bio-chemistry as a discipline in its own right. The equipment might signify his methodology but is used for flanking the composition rather than depicting actuality. On the left is "a SOXHLET extraction apparatus placed on an electrically heated water bath...." In a contemporary review Eric Newton admired the sheer visual excitement in the painting of the equipment, " the shine on the glass, the liquids in the test tubes, the curve of the rubber tubing, the torn edge of the blotting paper..." p.66 The painting measures 111.8 x 99.0 cms and is in the collection of the Royal Society, London. It was shown at the Royal Academy London exhibition in 1938 and was presented to the Royal Society by subscribers.

    Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861-1947)
Hopkins rose to prominence in the early 20th century by other than normal academic channels. Beginning work at age 17 for an insurance company and then a railroad, he eventually enrolled in the Royal School of Mines and assisted in a private chemistry laboratory. Hopkins qualified for membership in the Institute of Chemistry by attending lectures at London's University College. While studying medicine, he worked as a chemistry assistant at Guy's Hospital. Following graduation, Hopkins became a demonstrator in physiology at London University. Sir Michael Foster, renown Professor of Physiology at Cambridge University, invited Hopkins to develop a research and teaching program in chemical physiology. By 1901, Hopkins had devised new experimental methods to isolate uric acid (thought to be related to protein breakdown). Subsequent experiments showed how to make pure (crystalline) preparations of this compound. In France, physiologist Francois Magendie (mentor to experimentalist Claude Bernard ) had already demonstrated that an animal would die if fed a single foodstuff such as carbohydrate. Hopkin's breakthrough discovery isolated and identified the structure of the amino acid tryptophan, for which he shared the 1929 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. Hopkin's experiments proved that "unidentified accessory food factors" prevented the development of deficiency diseases. Rats sickened and died on a purified diet of sufficient energy, but thrived when fed a supplement of either 3 ml of milk (less than 4% of the whole food eaten) or an alcoholic extract of milk. Hopkins first proved that the "accessory food factor" (later called vitamins) had organic properties indispensable for maintaining good health. He stated:
